How do I prepare for an appointment with my advisor?

The weeks surrounding a registration period are very busy. Remember to schedule your appointment as early as possible. This will ensure that you get the time and attention that you deserve.

  1. Begin by reading the Advisor/Student Responsibilities. This will help you to better understand what is expected of you and what you can expect of your advisor.
  2. If you plan to transfer in any courses bring a copy of your transcripts. This will help in the preliminary evaluation of your credits.
  3. Have in mind the number or courses that you would like to take. Keep in mind that to be considered a full-time student for financial aid purposes you need to register for 12 credits per semester.
  4. Know when you are available for classes. Would you be looking to take classes during the day, evening or on weekends?
  5. Write down any questions/concerns/comments as they arise and bring them to your appointment.
  6. Take paper and a pen, you will receive a great deal of information during your appointment.
  7. Parents are more than welcome to attend advising appointments provided you have asked them to join you. You may want to have a parent, friend or relative with you if you are nervous about the meeting.
