WILMINGTON EDGED BY DELAWARE, 6-3
(Courtesy of the University of Delaware Sports Information)
NEWARK, DE -- Behind a strong pitching performance and an advantageous offense, the University of Delaware baseball team won its fourth straight game after topping intrastate rival Wilmington University, 6-3, at Bob Hannah Stadium on Tuesday afternoon.
Pat Dameron posted two hits and knocked in a pair of runs for Delaware (10-6), while Ryan Reed scored twice. The pitching staff also had a strong afternoon as five Hens combined to strike out eight and allow only two earned runs during the game.
Although the team went without a home run for the first time at home all season, Delaware took advantage of two errors by Wilmington (10-7) to pick up the victory.
In the second, the Blue Hens broke through after capitalizing on an early error by the Wilmington third baseman. Following the miscue, Reed slammed a double to left center that plated Bill Merkler. Two batters later, Dameron ripped an RBI double to right center that gave the team a 2-0 lead.
The very next inning, Delaware once again took advantage of an error after confusion in the Wilmington infield helped a routine pop fly find open space. Following the error, Jared Olson poked a single through the right side before Reed loaded the bases with a walk. Scott Shockley followed with a two-run single to right that gave the team a four-run lead. After a wild pitch chased in Reed, Dameron capped the scoring with an RBI single that gave the Hens a 6-0 lead.
With the bats doing their normal damage, the Blue Hens flashed some leather in the fourth. Carlos Alonso, the team’s standout third baseman, started the inning with a beautiful, bare-handed, off-balance play on a dribbler down the line. Eventually, he made a perfect throw to first to cut down Matt Umba by a half step.
Later, Kyle Davis closed out the inning with an equally great play deep in the hole at short. The senior co-captain used nice range to cut off a ball destined for leftfield and eventually threw a bullet from his knees to catch Drew Anusky by a stride at second.
After being held hitless for the first five innings of play, the Wildcats came to life in the top of the sixth. The first four Wilmington batters reached base in the inning, highlighted by a run-scoring single from Anusky. Later, Phil Aviola brought in the second run with an RBI grounder before a Blue Hen error closed out the scoring and brought the visitors back within three at 6-3.
With the team’s lead cut in half, the Delaware bullpen settled in. Michael Londino helped get out of the jam in the sixth before striking out two in a spotless seventh. Corey Crispell then took over in the eighth and fired two strong innings to close out the game.
Crispell earned his first career save for his efforts, while Michael O’Keeffe (1-0) picked up his first win after piecing together two scoreless innings in relief.
Steve Messick (0-2) took the loss for Wilmington after being out-dueled by Blue Hen starter Devon Pearson. The Delaware freshman struck out three in three scoreless innings, while the Wildcats’ starter allowed six runs, but only one earned, in four innings of work.
Alonso finished the game with two hits, while Chris Nehl, Jared Olson, and Scott Shockley each added a hit and run scored for the Hens.

Felician (23-23, 13-12) had tied the contest on an RBI double by Vinnie DiBenedetti in the bottom of the eighth. But winning pitcher Jordan Oncay led off the ninth with an infield single off of Golden Falcon reliever Jeff Calabrese (2-5) and advanced to second base on a wild pitch. One out later, Botting drove a ball into the right-center field gap for the eventual game-winner.
Oncay (2-1) had entered from his left field position to record a strikeout in the eighth, preserving the 2-2 tie with two runners on base. Cody Holliday, who started in right field, worked around two walks in the ninth inning to record his third save of the year.
Wildcat starting pitcher Mike Godwin held the Golden Falcon offense at bay until the seventh, departing with 10 strikeouts and two walks in 6 2/3 innings, two batters after allowing Mike Libretta’s solo home run. Felician’s Albie Sanguiliano was equally as effective, striking out 10 and walking two in 7 1/3 innings. Both starters allowed one earned run on five hits.
Holliday gave Wilmington (23-26, 14-11) a 2-0 lead in the fourth when he blasted an RBI triple to left-center and scored on a throwing error. J.T. Gregory had two hits for the Wildcats, as did Marcus McCleod for the Golden Falcons. Felician junior reliever John Calise tied the single-season and career school records for pitching appearances with his 24th and 59th, respectively.

WILMINGTON FALLS TO ADELPHI, 9-6 TO END MEMORABLE SEASON
(Courtesy of Franklin Pierce Sports Information)
RINDGE, NH -- Third-seeded Adelphi scored five times in the top of the eighth inning and picked up four more runs in the top of the ninth inning on Saturday night to defeat sixth-seeded Wilmington in the final game of the third day of the NCAA Division II Baseball Championship East Regional, hosted by Franklin Pierce University, at Dr. Arthur and Martha Pappas Field. The eighth-inning rally was keyed by a grand slam by junior right fielder Justin Ciamillo.
With the win, Adelphi (32-14) advances to play fourth-seeded Dowling in the championship round of the East Regional, beginning at 2 p.m. on Sunday. Dowling will have to defeat Adelphi twice to win the championship. The second game is scheduled for 5:30 p.m., if necessary. With the loss, Wilmington concludes its season at 29-29.
Trailing 2-0 in the top of the eighth inning, Adelphi loaded the bases and got on the board when junior third baseman Chris Weidlein hit a ground ball that was mishandled by the Wilmington third baseman. This left the bases loaded for Ciamillo, who deposited a pitch over the 365-foot sign in the left-center field power alley for his first home run of the season, a grand slam to give Adelphi a 5-2 lead.
However, Wilmington would rally back with three runs of its own in the bottom half of the eighth. After the bases were loaded with a single, a hit batsman and a walk, sophomore pitcher Drew Anusky clubbed a ball that clanged off the fence in left-center field, narrowly missing a grand slam of his own. Instead, the shot was a three-run, bases-clearing double to tie the game at 5-5.
Adelphi took a 9-5 lead it would not relinquish in the top of the ninth inning. Senior center fielder Robert Paccione scored from third with the go-ahead run on a double-play ball. Also in the inning, Weidlein drove in a run with a single to center field and the Panthers scored two runs as a result of a throwing error by the Wilmington pitcher.
Wilmington picked up a run on a double to right-center by junior shortstop JT Gregory in the bottom of the ninth to create the 9-6 final.
Junior right-hander Mike Bartlett started on the mound, tossed 6.2 innings and did not factor in the decision for Adelphi. He allowed two runs on seven hits, did not issue a walk, threw a wild pitch and struck out five. Senior right-hander Jake Potters blew a save, but picked up the win (2-0) in relief after throwing the final 1.2 innings. He gave up three runs (two earned) n three hits, walked one batter and hit another.
Sophomore right-hander Anthony Cimabue started on the hill and did not factor in the decision for Wilmington. Over 7.1 innings, he allowed three runs (two earned) on seven hits, walked two, threw a wild pitch and struck out two. Anusky took the loss (0-2), as he threw two-thirds of an inning in relief, gave up one run on one hit and walked one.
Following the game, Wilmington ended their season at 29-29 overall. Junior JT Gregory, along with sophomores Drew Anusky and Matt Botting each were named to the NCAA East Region All-Tournament Team for their efforts.
