WILDCAT MEN BATTLE TO 1-1 DRAW AGAINST DOMINICAN
NEW CASTLE, DE -- Wilmington University battled to a 1-1 tie against the visiting Chargers of Dominican College in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) men’s soccer action on Tuesday afternoon at the Kirkwood Complex.
The Wildcats (3-1-2 CACC/4-4-4) netted the game’s first goal during the 30th minute as sophomore Manny Payton headed home a pass from junior Kresimir Nurnberger. Wilmington would hold the 1-0 advantage for the remainder of the first half.
Dominican (3-1-2 CACC/4-3-3) found the equalizer early in the second half as Jorge Zubillaga took a pass off a free kick from Pedro DeAraujo, and ripped a shot from close to 23 yards out that found the back of the net. The two teams would remain tied throughout regulation, and the game went into overtime. The Chargers put the pressure on in both overtime periods, registering six shots, but it was the strong play of Wildcat keeper Spyros Stergiotis who kept the hosts alive. Stergiotis recorded four saves in the two extra sessions, and enabled Wilmington to escape with a draw.
Wilmington had a 16-12 edge in shots, and also held an 8-6 advantage in corner kicks. Stergiotis notched five saves for the match, while Dominican’s Brandon Heembrock turned away four shots for the visitors.
The Wildcats are back in action on Thursday afternoon, when they play host to the cross-town rival Lightning of Goldey-Beacom College in a CACC contest beginning at 4:00 PM.
