CAROUSEL PARK, WILMINGTON, DEL.

SUBJECT: Steele Leads Men to Team Title, Davidson Earns Women’s Medalist at 12th Annual WUXC Invite

The Wilmington University men’s and women’s cross country team were once again impressive on the course on Saturday, this time collecting both the individual winners in the women’s 6k and the men’s 8k races, in the 12th Annual Wilmington University Cross Country Invitational at the Wildcats home course at Carousel Park.

The men also took home the team championship, finishing with three members in the top 10, including senior Bill Steele who earned individual medalist for the second straight week but beating the field. His time of 29:21.53 was nearly 21 seconds faster than the field, averaging 5:54.4 minutes per mile.

Sophomore Matt Mossman placed in the top 10 for the second consecutive week, moving up one spot from last week’s sixth place finish for a fifth place result in a time of 30:10.20. Sophomore Ritchie Mitten also finished in the top ten for the second straight week, as he placed eighth overall with a time of 30:28.63.

Outstanding freshman Jesus Amezquita, the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Rookie Runner of the Week, backed his performance up with another top-15 performance, placing 11th with a time of 30:46.88. He was the top freshman in the field for the second week in a row. Rounding out the Wilmington scoring was freshman Carl Richardson, running in his first collegiate race and finishing in 25th with a time of 32:03.30.

Wilmington collected 50 points and defeated second place finisher Widener by 14 points. Catholic University placed third overall with 88 points, followed by Nyack with 91 and Howard CC with 133.

In the women’s 6k event, the Wildcats had the top two individual finishers, but it wasn’t enough to take over Nyack at the top of the team leaderboard as Wilmington placed fourth in the team standings with 100 points.

Sophomore Althea Davidson was once again the top runner for the lady Wildcats, earning medalist honors for the first time in her collegiate career. She was barely ahead of teammate Jeanette Halliburton who placed second overall, 1.99 seconds behind her teammate. Davidson beat the field with a time of 20:53.94. It was also the highest placing for Halliburton, a junior from Sierra Vista, Ariz.

Junior Sarabeth Oppermann placed 13th in the scoring with a time of 22:43.74, followed by freshman Morgan Ferrick in 30th with a time of 24:36.09. Senior Kristy McCrea rounded out the Wildcat scoring with 54 points and a time of 27:33.19.

CACC foe Nyack won the meet with a low score of 47 followed by Georgian Court (59), Catholic (72), Wilmington (100), and University of the Sciences (150) to round out the top five.

Both Wildcat squads will head to the site of the NCAA Northeast Regional venue next week in Mines Falls Park, Nashua, N.H. for a pair of meets. The teams want to a feel for the course and prepare themselves for the NCAA Regionals later in the fall.
