Women's Basketball 2012 Game Highlight

11/20/2012 - #14 Holy Family

SUBJECT: Charity Stripe Shooting Leads No. 14 Holy Family Past Wilmington Women’s Basketball, 94-72

A sizeable advantage from the free throw line allowed the USA Today Sports/Women’s Basketball Coaches Association Division II Poll No. 14 Holy Family women’s basketball team defeat Wilmington University, 94-72, on Tuesday night to open the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference schedule.

Wilmington (0-4, 0-1 CACC) shot 80 percent from the foul line, but only went to the line on five occasions while Holy Family (3-1, 1-0 CACC) went 32-for-45 from the charity stripe including a 19-0 advantage in the first half.

The Wildcats shot 33.7 percent from the floor for the game (28-for-83) and held Holy Family to shooting 37.8 percent (28-for-74) from the floor but a 28 point differential from the foul line proved to be the telling story at the Campus Center.

The Wildcats went on a 7-0 run to turn a three point deficit into a 31-27 lead with 3:19 to play in the first half. Junior transfer Ally McDonald hit a jumper at the 4:18 mark to start the run while freshman Tenicia Spence followed with a three pointer on the next trip down the floor to take a two point lead. Fellow freshman Tiaja Harrold grabbed an offensive rebound and converted the extra opportunity into two more points as the Wildcats went ahead 31-27 with 3:19 to play in the opening half.

But it was all Holy Family from there on out, as the Wildcats went 0-for-3 for the rest of the half and couldn’t stop the Tigers as they spurted to a 10 point lead after a 14-0 run to close the half.

The Wildcats were finally able to get to the foul line with 9:15 left in regulation after Amanda Walters converted an and-one opportunity, but it was too little too late as the Wildcats already found themselves down 75-50 after the three-point play.

Senior Danielle Thomas led the Wildcats with 22 points, shooting 7-for-12 from the floor including an outstanding 6-for-8 from beyond the three-point arc. Thomas also added a team high six rebounds and passed out two assists.

Spence, the reigning CACC Rookie of the Week, added 20 points for the Wildcats to make it three straight contests with at least 20 points. She shot 7-for-22 from the field, sinking five three points and adding five rebounds. Harold added 11 points off the bench for the Wildcats, shooting 5-for-8 from the floor and dished out four assists and had a team high four steals.

Reigning All-CACC First Teamer and CACC Player of the Week Erin Mann led the Tigers on their home court with 23 points, shooting 7-for-12 from the floor and adding nine points from the foul line. Four other Tigers finished in double-digits for the contest with Molly Hanlon adding 14, Kelly Brady and Mary Ellen McCollum scoring 11 each and Carolyne Heston chipping in with 10 off the bench.

Wilmington does not have too much time to sit and think about Tuesday’s game, as the Wildcats turn right around and head to Division I Delaware State on Wednesday for a 5:30 p.m. tip off prior to Thanksgiving break.
