Baseball 2013 Game Highlight
04/09/2013 - SHIPPENSBURG
SUBJECT: Baseball’s Win Streak Extends to 13 Straight with Walk-Off Win in the 10th, 3-2, over Shippensburg
A two-out bases empty rally in the bottom of the 10th propelled the Wilmington University baseball team to a 3-2 extra inning, nonconference victory over Shippensburg on Tuesday afternoon at Wilson Field.
Brandon Payne hit a hot shot down the right field line, just past the first baseman for a double and Kyle Lindstrom singled him home to give the Wildcats (26-9 overall) their 13th straight victory. Shippensburg (18-13 overall) lost for the eighth time in its past 10 games, after holding leads of 1-0 and 2-1 early in today’s ballgame.
The Red Raiders scored single runs in the top of the first and third innings, but was then held scoreless by three Wilmington relievers over the next seven innings.
Rob Gore started the game and tossed the first three innings, allowing both runs while striking out one batter and allowing three hits and three walks. Tim Racek came on and tossed three scoreless innings, allowing only three hits while striking out one, leaving the game at a 2-2 tie. Peter Monahan pitched the next three innings, throwing three hitless and scoreless innings while striking out one batter and only allowing two walks. Jarrett Shaffer pitched a scoreless top of the 10th to give the Wildcats their final chance.
With two outs in the inning, Payne stepped in and pulled one down the first base line, left of the first baseman. The Red Raider reached and got a glove on the ball, but the ball trickled behind him and into shallow right field, but deep enough to allow Payne to take off for second. The throw from right was low as Payne slid in for the double.
Lindstrom, with two strikes, pulled a pitch into the hold between short and third as Payne was being waved home from the very get-go. The throw from the left-fielder was to the catcher’s left, pulling him off home plate. Payne slid on the inside of the bag, avoiding the tag attempt and touching home for the game-winning run.
The Wildcats needed to come back from a pair of one run deficits to even force extra innings, doing so in the bottom of the second and sixth innings.
Again with two outs in the inning, Ryan Richards singled home Payne in the bottom of the second to tie the game at 1-1. The Wildcats knotted the game once again with a single run in the sixth, as Sam Goines legged out an infield single to short with runners on second and third for the RBI.
Payne led the Wildcats at the plate with a 3-for-5 afternoon, scoring all three runs for the home team. Jordan Johnson extended his hitting streak to 17 straight by going 2-for-4 while Josh Hampton hit a double and went 2-for-5. Matt Lopes, Lindstrom, Richards, and Goines rounds out the 11 Wilmington hits with one base knock each.
