Men's Soccer 2013 Game Highlight
09/14/2013 - Univ. of Bridgeport Invitational Bridgeport
SUBJECT: Quaranta’s Second Half Goal Lifts No. 22 Wilmington Men’s Soccer Over Bridgeport, 1-0
The Wilmington University men’s soccer team survived a flurry corners and pressure down the stretch to come out alive with a 1-0 victory over host Bridgeport to cap the UB Tournament on Saturday night at Knights Field.
The combination of Tommy Quaranta and Elton Joe was at it again on Saturday night, as the duo gave No. 22 Wilmington (3-1 overall) the only goal it would need as goalkeeper Frank Hall slammed the door for the shutout. Bridgeport (0-2) registered five shots and three corner kicks in the final 10 minutes of action, but couldn’t solve Frank and the Wildcat defense.
After a scoreless first half which featured a 4-3 shot advantage by the Purple Knights but a 3-2 corner advantage by the Wildcats, the visitors were finally able to get on the board early in the second frame.
On the team’s first shot of the second half, Joe fed Quaranta whose shot deflected off the Bridgeport defense and past Purple Knight goalkeeper Agustin Prados and into the goal. It was Quaranta’s second goal of the season, this one coming the 51st minute of the match.
“I’m really proud of our effort tonight,” head coach Nick Papanicolas said. “We had a lot of bench players that came in and played valuable minutes tonight and they all contributed in a positive way. Tonight was a hard fought win.”
Hall was called upon to make five saves tonight as Bridgeport was able to outshoot the Wildcats, 14-9. The two corners in the final minute of action allowed the Knights to hold an 8-5 advantage on corners.
Joe and Quaranta led the offense with three shots a piece, each getting one on frame. But it was Quaranta’s shot that found the back of the net and proved to be the game-winner.
Wilmington returns home to round out a tough stretch of non-conference match on Tuesday afternoon. The Wildcats will square off against Millersville at the WU Athletics Complex with the opening draw scheduled for 4 p.m.
