Volleyball 2013 Game Highlight
09/18/2013 - SHEPHERD
SUBJECT: Shepherd Comes Back to Shock Wilmington Volleyball, 3-2, in Nonconference Action
Unlike Tuesday night against Georgian Court, the Wilmington University volleyball was unable to pull out the fifth set on Wednesday against visiting Shepherd, as the Rams rallied back to stun the Wildcats, 3-2, at the WU Athletics Complex.
Set scores for the match were 25-17, 19-25, 25-18, 21-25, and 12-15.
Not even 24 hours between matches, the Wildcats (4-6) needed to go the full five sets to determine a winner in back-to-back nights, this time having the momentum swing in favor of the visitors in the fifth and deciding set.
Much like the fifth set on Tuesday night, the match was knotted at 6-6 before the deciding run was made. But on Wednesday night, it was Shepherd (4-4) who tallied five of the next six points to grab an 11-7 lead and hang on for the victory.
Trailing 11-7, the Wildcats attempted to make a late match comeback, but it was too little too late, as the rally fell short.
Katie Shorter cut the deficit to 11-8 with a solo block, before a dump by Kasey Couch and a Ram attack error closed the gap to 12-10. After another point by Shepherd, a ball handling error and a solo block by Brittany Biddle had the Wildcats within one at 13-12, but after a timeout out, the visitors responded with back-to-back points to close out the match.
The offense was inconsistent on Wednesday night, as the Wildcats were able to hit .195 in the first set and .289 in the third, but combined to hit .010 in the second, fourth, and fifth sets combined.
Freshman Allison Briley was the lone Wildcat to reach double figure kills, recording 10 on 47 attempts with four errors. She also added 11 digs for the double-double. Alex Siolos and Kasey Couch each dished out 17 assists while Siolos etched out Couch in digs, 12-11, respectively.
Wilmington was able to hang around in the match due to the 40 attack errors by the Rams, as they hit .127 on the night. Despite the 40 errors, Shepherd collected 68 kills, compared to the Wildcats’ 40.
Kaitlin DiGiacinto paced the back row with 22 digs, followed closely by senior Annie Scarfo’s 19. Shelby Henderson added 16 digs in addition to Siolos, Briley, and Couch’s.
Bear, Del. native and the starting libero for Shepherd, Lauren Summa collected a match high 35 digs on the night, while the Rams out dug the Wildcats, 110-98. The rams also collected nine total blocks to the Wildcats’ five.
Wilmington will have a chance to rebound in a big way this weekend, as the Wildcats get ready to host the 2013 Wildcat Regional Invitational on Friday and Saturday. The team will start off with Millersville and Adelphi on Friday, before squaring off against NYIT and Le Moyne on Saturday at the WU Athletics Complex.
