SUBJECT: Six Match Win Streak Snapped as Philadelphia Hands Wilmington Volleyball 3-1 Loss
The Wilmington University volleyball team had its six match win streak snapped on Wednesday night, as Philadelphia captured a 3-1 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference South Division victory at the Gallagher Center.
Set scores for the match for the Wildcats were 18-25, 22-25, 25-16, and 19-25.
The loss drops Wilmington (16-9, 11-2 CACC) back into a tie in the loss column with Philadelphia (11-8, 10-2 CACC) in the CACC South Division. The Wildcats continue to hold the tiebreaker over the Rams however, as the Wildcats swept third place Georgian Court while Philadelphia fell to the Lions previously in the season.
Leading 14-12 midway through the first set on Wednesday, the Rams went on a seven point run to break open the frame in favor of the home team. The Wildcats tried to fight back, but could only get to as close at 22-17 before the Rams finished off the set in scoring three of the next four points.
The second set was highly contested and back-and-forth throughout the game as the largest lead of the set was 17-14 in favor of the Rams. The Wildcats battled to keep the score close, even tying the match at 18-18 following a Kasey Couch ace, but consecutive points for the Rams gave Philadelphia the lead for good. Now leading 22-21, the Rams again scored three of the final four points in the set to close out the game, 25-22.
The third set was all Wilmington, as it turned a 14-13 lead into a 18-13 advantage after four straight points and 23-14 following another five consecutive scores. Allison Briley gave the Wildcats set point before a Ram attack error brought the Wildcats to within one at 2-1, with a 25-16 third set win.
But another mid set rally in the fourth set rallied the Rams to close out the match. Trailing 16-12, the Rams went on a streak of seven straight points to take an 18-16 lead. Kills from Alex Siolos and Kaitlin DiGiacinto brought the Wildcats to within one at 19-18, but the Rams went on another 5-0 run to get to set point before a Brittany Olson kill gave Philadelphia the set, and the match, 25-19.
Despite out-blocking the Rams, 6-4, in the match, the Wildcats were out-hit and out-dug by the Rams. Philadelphia hit .246 for the match as compared to the Wildcats’ .183 attack percentage.
Kaitlin DiGiacinto set a new career high with 18 kills on Wednesday night, hitting .245 for the match n 53 swings with only five errors. Briley was the only other Wildcat to reach double figures in kills, collected 15 on 51 attempts with only three errors for a .235 attack percentage. Siolos chipped in with nine kills while dishing out a team high 23 assists.
DiGiacinto added her ninth double-double of the season, collecting a team high 21 digs as well. The sophomore also added the only solo block of the night for the Wildcats while also adding two block assists. Kasey Couch added her eighth double-double of the season with 18 assists and 17 digs while Shelby Henderson also added 17 digs while Annie Scarfo was the final Wildcat in double figures with 10 digs on the night.
The Wildcats have a chance to get back on track on Friday as they return home to the WU Athletics Complex to host USciences. Due to traveling to Post on Saturday, Friday night’s match is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m.
