Women's Soccer 2013 Game Highlight

10/26/2013 - Nyack

SUBJECT: Victoria Vasapolli’s Two Goals Not Enough as Wilmington Women’s Soccer Falls Short at Nyack, 3-2

Trailing by three at the halftime break, the Wilmington University women’s soccer team fell short in the comeback bid, falling to Nyack, 3-2, in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference road contest on Saturday afternoon.

Despite Saturday being the fourth loss in a row for the Wildcats (5-10-1, 5-5-1 CACC), the team still sits in sixth place in the CACC Standings with only one contest remaining. Nyack (7-7-2, 6-2-2 CACC) won for the second time in a row and now is tied for fourth overall in the CACC with 20 points.

Nyack’s Julia Losert gave the home team a 3-0 lead in the first half, scoring all three goals for the Warriors. She tallied goals in the 28th, 33rd, and 44th minutes of the opening half, bringing her season total to seven goals and seven assists for 21 points.

The comeback bid came immediately following the second half whistle, as Victoria Vasapolli recorded her fifth goal of the season at the 45:30 mark, off a pass from Jenna Quaranta.

Vasapolli cut it to a one goal game with her sixth goal of the season in the 66th minute, scoring an unassisted goal at the 65:15 mark of the match. But the comeback halted there, as the Wildcats were unable to score again the rest of the way.

Nyack outshot the Wildcats, 22-8, for the match while earning more corners, 6-1, as well. Wildcat goalkeeper Julia Brown recorded six saves in the loss while Madeline Barbarino made three stops for the Warriors in the win.

Wilmington has one more shot to gain momentum heading into the CACC Tournament, as the Wildcats visit Philadelphia next Saturday in their regular season finale. The match is scheduled for a 3:30 p.m. start.
