Men's Basketball 2013 Game Highlight

12/21/2013 - Exhibition UMES

SUBJECT: Wilmington Men’s Basketball Finishes Down the Stretch, Beating UMES, 65-62, in an Exhibition

Five players reached double figures as the Wilmington University men’s basketball team scored five of the last seven points to defeat NCAA Division I University of Mary Eastern Shore, 65-62, in an exhibition game on Saturday at the William P. Hytche Athletic Cente

A layup by Ta’Vaune Griffin with 1:02 left in regulation put the Wildcats (5-8 overall) ahead for good as a game-tying three-pointer at the buzzer was off the mark for UMES (2-7 overall).

The Wildcats used one of their three allotted excusable contests when facing non-NCAA Division II opponents on Saturday, meaning the game does not count towards the Wildcats overall season record, but does for UMES.

After a back and forth first half, UMES took the lead for the final time with 5:06 remaining and then scored the final six points of the half to head into the break leading 35-28.

The lead continued to grow to start the second half, as a foul shot with 18:43 gave the Hawks their largest lead of the afternoon at 38-28.

A three-pointer in the Wildcats’ ensuing possession by Valentino Thompson started a 9-0 run to get back into the contest. But a quick 7-1 spurt allowed UMES to go back up eight at 46-38 with 13:47 to play, capped by a dunk from Troy Snyder on the fast break.

Now down nine, the Wildcats used their own 7-1 run to get within three at 55-52 with 5:18 to play, and again found themselves down five with 4:10 left on the clock. After the final media timeout of the second half, the Wildcats made their run.

Trailing 59-54, Rashuan Rasheed hit a pair of free-throws before Thompson cut the deficit to one with a layup with 3:14 to play. Another layup by Thompson on the Wildcats next possession made it a 6-0 run and put the Wildcats ahead 60-59 with 2:26 left.

After UMES tied the match by only hitting the first of two free throws, 60-60, Griffin’s layup with 1:02 put the Wildcats in front for good. Thompson hit the second of his two free-throws to move up three before UMES converted a layup with 24 seconds to play to cut it to 63-62. But senior Herb Dennis hit both of his two free-throws with 15 seconds left, forcing UMES into trying a last second three-pointer. Hakeen Baxter’s shot from deep rimmed up to give the Wildcats the win.

Wilmington was led by Dennis, Rasheed, and Shaq Monroe-Gaskins who each scored 11 points in the game. Thompson and Tyrik Gass added 10 points each to put five Wildcats in double-figures for the contest. Monroe-Gaskin and Griffin added a team high six rebounds each while Dennis dished out a game high five assists.

The Wildcats are back for one more game in the 2013 calendar year, as they host Shippensburg in a nonconference contest at the WU Athletics Complex on New Year’s Eve. Opening tip is scheduled for 1 p.m.
