SUBJECT: Dominican Takes CACC Cross Division Matchup, 90-77, Over Wilmington University Men’s Basketball
Two Dominican College players recorded double-doubles to lead the Chargers to a 90-77 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference cross divisional victory over the Wilmington University men’s basketball team on Saturday afternoon at the Hennessy Center.
The Wildcats (9-15, 5-10 CACC) had five student-athletes in double digits, led by Valentino Thompson and Herb Dennis’ 14 points, but it wasn’t enough as Dominican (14-7, 10-4 CACC) led by as many as 13 points and hit 5-of-7 free throws down the stretch to run away late.
The Chargers led 48-39 at the halftime break, but the Wildcats attempted their comeback halfway through the second frame.
With the Dominican lead at 10, 57-47, the Wildcats went on an 8-2 run to close to within four for the first time since the 12:15 mark of the first half. Senior Dusan Kojic started the spurt with a layup, followed by a steal and layup by freshman Tyaire Ponzo-Meek nine seconds later. After a Dominican score, Dennis put home a layup and a pair of free throws on back-to-back possessions to get within 59-55 with 11:17 to play.
Junior Tyrik Gass once again cut the deficit to four points with a jumper with 10:47 left in regulation at 61-57, but that would be as close as the Wildcats would get the rest of the way. Wilmington kept the game in single digits for most of the second half before Dominican’s A.J. Burton hit one of two from the foul line to go up 85-75 with 1:01 to play. From there, the Chargers extended the lead to 13 to finish the game, on the strength of their late free throw shooting.
Thompson and Dennis added four assists east as well, while Dennis finished with a game high five steals. Thompson corralled four rebounds to fill the stat sheet. Shai Henry and Kojic added 11 points each with Kojic shooting a perfect 5-for-5 while grabbing a team high nine rebounds. Gass chipped in with 10 points while Ta’Vaune Griffin added a team high nine rebounds and three blocks.
The Chargers were led by Nick Smith and Justin Turner’s double-doubles, as Smith scored a game high 22 points and added 10 rebounds, and five assists. Turner poured in 13 points and 10 rebounds off the bench, adding three steals. A.J. Burton and Robert Hueston chipped in with 13 points each as well, with Burton’s points coming off the bench.
Dominican shot 51.5 percent (34-for-66) from the field while hitting 6-of-16 from beyond the arc. Wilmington went 6-of-11 from deep but shot 27-of-62 (43.5 percent) from the field for the game.
