SUBJECT: Garret Kerr’s Big Night Sends USciences to a 81-65 Men’s Basketball Victory over Wilmington University
Garret Kerr’s 18th double-double of the season helped lead the University of the Sciences to an 81-65 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference men’s basketball victory over Wilmington University on Tuesday night inside the Bobby Morgan Arena.
The Devils (14-8, 10-5 CACC) jumped out to a first half lead on the strength of an early 13-2 run, breaking a 7-7 tie with a bucket at the 16:26 mark to take the lead for good. Valentino Thompson tried to keep the Wildcats (9-16, 5-11 CACC) close with 10 first half points, but USciences’ lead grew to as large as 14 points before going into the break leading by 11.
Sophomore Shai Henry hit his lone three-pointer of the night to open the second half, sinking the deep shot right in front of his own bench to bring the Wildcats to within eight at 34-26, but that would be as close as the visitors would get for the rest of the night.
A 9-2 spurt gave the Devils a 43-28 lead with 17:25 remaining in regulation before another 8-0 run brought the home team’s lead to 22 points with 12:16 showing on the scoreboard.
Kerr collected his double-double in the first half, scoring 20 points while adding 12 rebounds, shooting 7-of-10 from the floor and a perfect 6-of-6 from the foul line. The junior ended with game highs of 37 points and 18 rebounds, shooting 11-of-15 from the field, including 1-of-2 from deep, and adding 14-of-16 from the foul line. He also pitched in with three assists, three steals, and a block.
Freshman Drew Johnson dropped a season best 16 points on Tuesday night, shooting 6-of-9 from the field, including 2-of-4 from beyond the three-point arc, and a perfect 2-of-2 from the foul line. Johnson also dished out a pair of assists and grabbed a rebound in only 12 minutes of action off the bench.
Thompson finished with 10 points for the Wildcats, shooting 4-of-6 from the field, including a perfect 2-of-2 from deep. Tyaire Ponzo-Meek poured in nine points while dishing out four assists, collecting four steals, and grabbing four rebounds in earning his first collegiate start. Senior Herb Dennis passed out a team high five assists while scoring four points and collecting a pair of steals.
The Wildcats hit 7-of-21 from beyond the three-point arc for the night, shooting 22-for-60 (36.7 percent) from the floor. USciences put up 56 shots and converted on 29 attempts, shooting 51.8 percent from the floor for the night.
Wilmington forced the Devils into 13 turnovers on the night, converting them to 14 points on the other end of the night. But USciences’ 12 offensive rebounds turned into 15 second chance points for the Devils.
After three games on the road, the Wildcats return to the WU Athletics Complex for back-to-back games. The first of two straight home games begins on Saturday against North Division doe Felician, slated for a 3 p.m. tip.
