SUBJECT: No. 17 Wilmington Baseball Closes Outs Florida Trip with Wins over LIU Post, 3-1, and Adelphi, 5-2
A pair of late game rallies allowed the No. 17 Wilmington University baseball team to finish out its Florida trip with a pair of victories on Sunday, defeating coming back to defeat LIU Post, 3-1, and Adelphi,5-2, on Sunday.
After the second game of a doubleheader against Southern Connecticut State was canceled, the Wildcats (9-2-1 overall) picked up a game against LIU Post on Sunday morning at the Santaluces Sports Complex, scoring three runs in the top of the eighth to come back and win 3-1. The Wildcats then played Adelphi at Barry University to finish out their Florida Trip, scoring all five runs in the final three innings to come back and defeat Adelphi, 5-2.
LIU Post starter James Long was cruising through the first seven innings only allowing four hits before heading into the eighth innings. Trailing, 1-0, going into the top of the eighth, the Wildcats struck for three runs and the victory.
Jon Castro led off the inning with a walk before being moved up a base on a sacrifice bunt by Josh Swirchak. Now with two outs and Castro still on second, Sam Goines singled through the left side on an 0-2 count to tie the game at 1-1. After stealing second base, Goines came around for the go-ahead run on an RBI single from Mike Jerminski. The final run of the inning came off the bat of Frank Samluk, as Jerminski raced home from second after a single through the right side.
Ryan Douglas came on in relief of Jamie Treml and worked around a leadoff error and a one out walk, stranding runners at first and third to end the eighth inning.
Senior Jarrett Shaffer came on for the ninth innings, recording a pair of strikeouts while leaving a runner on second in earning his first save of the season.
The Wildcats tallied the game-tying run in the top of the seventh before taking a 4-1 lead over Adelphi in the eighth inning the night cap before going on to win 5-2 to complete a 4-2-1 Florida Trip.
Wilmington starter Jake Wersinger tossed the first six innings, striking out six batters while allowing three hits and the only run of the game in the bottom of the fourth inning. He would leave with the no decision, prior to the Wildcats making their comeback in the final third of the game.
With two outs and Samluk on first, the junior stole second base to put a runner in scoring position. Freshman Brody Tennant made it pay, as he hit a single into left field, allowing Samluk to score before being thrown out at second attempting for the double.
The Wildcats regrouped in the eighth inning once again, scoring three runs to take the lead for the second time in the day. With the bases loaded and one out, Matt Lopes singled into right field for the go-ahead RBI. Now with two outs and the bases loaded, Samluk reached on a fielder’s choice, scoring two of the three runners on base, giving the Wildcats a 4-1 lead.
Jon Castro singled in an insurance run in the top of the ninth, scoring Brendan Fallers from third base for the 5-2 lead. Senior reliever Nick Marics came on in the bottom of the ninth, recording his second save of the season, working around two runners on base without relinquishing a run.
Samluk batted 3-for-4 in the first game while Swirchak went 3-for-4 in the nightcap. Samluk added a 1-for-4 performance in the second game, knocking in a team high two runners.
Jamie Treml picked up the win in the opener after an inning of relief while Tyler Fries picked up the victory in an inning of relief in the second game of the day.
Wilmington returns north and returns to action on Tuesday in a scheduled home game against West Chester. The game is scheduled for a 3 p.m. start at Wilson Field, but the winter weather may have other ideas so please stay tuned to www.wilmu.edu/athletics for all postponements, cancelations, and location changes for future games.
