Men's Basketball 2011 Season Outlook

Wilmington University looks forward to the 2011-2012 season, returning four of five starters from their 2010-2011 Central Athletic Collegiate Conference (CACC) team. Head coach Mike Gallagher enters his third season at the helm, complete with a team that returns nine letter-winners, while bringing in four new players to navigate their league play.

The Wildcats will continue with the balanced scoring it had last year. The top five leading scorers are back, led by 6’7” senior guard/forward Matt King (11 points per game and 6 rebounds per game) and guards, junior Isiah Mason (11 ppg), Senior Ed Freeman (8 ppg), and Senior Corye Payton (11.5 ppg). Sophomore Herb Dennis will start his second season at point guard (11 ppg and 3.69 assists/game).

Brandon Fox and James Pee, two juniors that did not see playing time last year, will aid the team this year. Fox will provide much needed help down low, and Pee at the gives depth at the shooting guard position. Newcomers, freshman Rashaun Rasheed, senior RJ Tucker, and senior Brett Foskey give Wilmington integral players inside, while returning players Mike Sammons and Paco Boussougou, both seniors, give the ‘Cats much needed depth. Returning sophomore guard Jarvis Perry and junior Andrew Corrigan will help in the backcourt, with Perry at point guard and Corrigan at shooting guard. Freshman guard Asmar Williams will make contributions at both guard positions.

Wilmington opens a challenging season against Division I Delaware State University on November 12th. The out-of-conference schedule is highlighted with a trip to Las Vegas, Nevada where they will play two nationally ranked teams, University of Indianapolis on December 16th and Central Oklahoma on December 18th at the South Point Casino and Spa Arena. Central Oklahoma ended the regular season last year at #4 in the country.

The Wildcats will also play two PSAC schools, Kutztown University on November 15th and Millersville University on November 23rd. Wilmington will host two ECC schools, NYIT on November 26th and St. Thomas Aquinas on November 30th. The conference schedule is highlighted with two games against Hall of Fame Coach Herb Magee and the Philadelphia University Rams. The first game will be at Philadelphia on December 3rd and the second at Wilmington on January 31st. Wilmington hosts Elite-8 Finalist Bloomfield College on December 10th. The rivalry between the Wildcats and Goldey-Beacom College is reignited at Wilmington on January 3rd and continues at Goldey-Beacom on January 24th.
