8/27/2009 – WILMINGTON UNIVERSITY INVITATIONAL
# 19 EAST STROUDSBURG UNIVERSITY

WILMINGTON MEN OPEN SEASON WITH 2-1 WIN OVER #19 EAST STROUDSBURG

NEW CASTLE, DE -- Junior midfielder Anthony Randazzo connected on a shot from about 25 yards out with just 13:50 left in the game to give the Wildcats of Wilmington University a come-from-behind 2-1 victory over the visiting Warriors of East Stroudsburg University in non-conference men’s soccer action at the Kirkwood Soccer Complex on Thursday afternoon. The Warriors entered the contest, ranked #19 in the NSCAA Preseason Poll.

The season opener for both teams, and the first action of the Wilmington University Invitational, saw both teams struggle to find quality scoring opportunities for much of the first half. East Stroudsburg got the first break, as a foul was called on one of the Wildcats in the box, giving the Warriors a penalty kick. Toric Robinson beat Wilmington keeper Ethan Kavanah to the lower left and put the visitors on the board with a 1-0 lead. Wilmington would answer just a minute and a half later as sophomore Nickalus McDonald took a through ball from senior midfielder Fatoma Turay and deposited it past the outstretched Larry Pokrywa from East Stroudsburg.

The score would remain tied until Randazzo’s heroics late in the second half. Junior Chris Simm fed Randazzo the ball, who one touched, turned, and fired a laser into the upper right portion of the net. The ball deflected off the bottom of the crossbar and bounced in, giving the ‘Cats the 2-1 advantage. Wilmington would hold for the remainder of the game, playing possession and sealing their first victory of the season.

Sophomore Ethan Kavanagh (1-0) recorded three saves in goal for Wilmington, while his counterpart from East Stroudsburg, Larry Pokrywa notched four saves. The Wildcats held an 11-6 advantage in shots, but the Warriors had the 5-3 edge in corner kicks.

With the win, Wilmington improved to 1-0 on the season, while East Stroudsburg dropped to 0-1 to start the year. The Wildcats return to the pitch on Saturday afternoon, when they host the Bears of the New York Institute of Technology in their final game of the Wilmington University Invitational, at 2:00 PM.

WILDCATS WIN WILMINGTON UNIVERSITY INVITATIONAL WITH 2-1 VICTORY OVER NYIT

NEW CASTLE, DE -- The Wildcats of Wilmington University held off the visiting Bears of the New York Institute of Technology, 2-1 in regional men’s soccer action on Saturday afternoon at the Kirkwood Soccer Complex. With the victory, the ‘Cats won the Wilmington University Invitational and remained unbeaten to start the season.

Coming off a huge win over #19 East Stroudsburg University on Thursday afternoon, Wilmington wasted little time in getting on the board on day two of action. Just over two minutes into the game, senior forward Sargbah Tarpeh blasted a deflection off a Bear defender into the back of the net, and sent the hosts up with a quick 1-0 lead. The Wildcats added another during the 16th minute, when junior defender Jamal Wiggins ripped a free kick that deflected off a NYIT defender and found its way into the goal. That put Wilmington up 2-0, and the ‘Cats would enter halftime holding the same score.

NYIT increased the pressure early for much of the second half and it finally paid off when David Suchodolski buried a deflection off a Wildcat defender during the 68th minute to cut the lead to 2-1. The Bears continued pressing, and had a few chances late in the game, including a shot as time expired. Wilmington keeper Ethan Kavanagh came up huge with a diving save to his right as the final whistle sounded.

Kavanagh was solid in net, recording six saves for Wilmington, while Cosimo D’Agostino notched six saves for the Bears. NYIT held a slim edge in shots (13-12), and had an 8-4 edge in corner kicks.

With the win, Wilmington remained unbeaten and improved to 2-0 on the season, while NYIT dropped to 1-1 to start the year. The Wildcats return to the pitch on Thursday afternoon, when they travel to take part in the Southern New Hampshire University Invitational. Their first action is against St. Anselm College with the game scheduled to start at 4:00 PM.

#9 MEN'S SOCCER HOLDS OFF ST. ANSELM, 1-0

MANCHESTER, NH -- Wilmington University held off a hard-charging effort from the Hawks of St. Anselm College, and left with a close 1-0 victory in opening action of the Southern New Hampshire University Men’s Soccer Invitational on Thursday afternoon. The Wildcats, ranked number nine in Division II in the latest NSCAA poll, ran their unbeaten streak to three to start the season.

The ‘Cats started off the first half with a flurry of pressure, but could not get on the board until senior forward Sargbah Tarpeh found the back of the net during the 29th minute. Wilmington had numerous chances to score, but Hawks keeper John Corridan was solid in goal, keeping St. Anselm in the game. The Hawks mounted an attack over the last few minutes, but could not get their shots on goal and the Wildcats escaped with the victory.

Sophomore goalkeeper Ethan Kavanagh (3-0) recorded zero saves in the first half before giving way to junior Duhan Malali in the second half. Malali recorded one save, as the duo combined for the 'Cats' first shutout of the year St. Anselm’s Corridan notched six saves in defeat. Wilmington held a 14-10 edge in shots and had the 6-2 edge in corner kicks.

With the win, Wilmington improved to 3-0 while St. Anselm dropped to 0-2 on the season. The Wildcats return to the pitch on Saturday afternoon, for a much anticipated match-up with the 20th ranked Penmen of Southern New Hampshire University, as they conclude play at the SNHU Invitational. # 20 Southern New Hampshire University

#20 SOUTHERN NEW HAMPSHIRE UPSETS #9 WILMINGTON, 1-0

MANCHESTER, NH -- In a much anticipated match-up between two of the East Region’s top men’s soccer teams, the 20th ranked Penmen of the Southern New Hampshire University got the better of the 9th ranked Wildcats of Wilmington University. The Penmen won the battle 1-0, in closing action of the Southern New Hampshire University on Saturday afternoon.

Freshman Crhis Tsonis scored an unassisted goal just before the half, and that would be all the offense the Penmen would need. Tsonis would score after he won a 50-50 ball from a Wilmington defender after a long downfield pass. He would evade a slide tackle from another defender, then slide a ground ball past Wilmington keeper Ethan Kavanagh from eight yards out when Kavanagh came out to play the ball.

Kavanagh notched five saves in goal for Wilmington, while Sean Lambert had five saves for Southern New Hampshire as he registered his second shutout of the season. The Penmen outshot the Wildcats by a 16-9 margin, and the corner kicks were even at five apiece.

Following the game, Wilmington dropped to 3-1 on the season, while Southern New Hampshire improved to 3-1 overall. The Wildcats return to action on Tuesday afternoon, when they play host to the regionally ranked Purple Knights of the University of Bridgeport. Game time is slated for 4:00 PM.

9/8/2009 – UNIVERSITY OF BRIDGEPORT

#16 WILMINGTON DOWNS BRIDGEPORT, 5-1 IN MEN’S SOCCER

NEW CASTLE, DE -- For the second time this season, the Wildcats of Wilmington University matched up against one of the East Region’s top teams, as they tangled with the visiting Purple Knights of the University of Bridgeport. This time, however, they came out on top, as they easily dismissed the Purple Knights by a score of 5-1 in men’s soccer action on Tuesday afternoon at the Kirkwood Soccer Complex.

Wilmington, ranked 2nd in the latest NSCAA East Region poll and 16th in the nation, wasted little time in getting on the board as senior defender Dave Dease took a pass from junior Danny Nguyen and ran it up three-quarters of the field before chipping it over the head of the Bridgeport keeper during the 15th minute. Just four minutes later, junior Jorge Zapata blasted a shot from the corner, off a feed from senior Sargbah Tarpeh, that found its way into the back of the net. Sophomore Mike Lewis closed out the scoring in the first half for Wilmington, chipping a pass from sophomore Nickalus McDonald into the upper right corner of the net.

Bridgeport, ranked fifth in the most recent NSCAA East Region poll, ruined the shutout opportunity during the 70th minute, as Gilbert Bayonne buried a penalty kick opportunity. The Wildcats would add two more goals before the end of the half, both coming off the foot of McDonald. In the 84th minute, McDonald finished a feed from Lewis, and then added an unassisted tally in the 86th minute to give the ‘Cats a 5-1 advantage that would hold as the final score.

The Wildcats’ Duhan Malali (1-0), making his first start of the season, recorded seven saves in goal. Bridgeport’s Milos Suljagic had three saves and let up four goals, as the ‘Cats ended his three-game streak where he hadn’t allowed a goal. Peter Barrows replaced Suljagic during the final five minutes, and notched one save while letting up a goal. The Purple Knights outshot Wilmington by a slim 13-11 margin, and held a 9-3 advantage in corner kicks.

With the win, Wilmington improved to 4-1 on the season, while Bridgeport suffered their first loss of the year and dropped to 2-1-1 overall. The Wildcats return to the pitch on Thursday afternoon, when they travel to take on the Dolphins of Le Moyne College. Le Moyne is currently ranked seventh in the NSCAA East Region, and game time is slated for 4:00 PM.

WILDCATS EDGED BY LE MOYNE, 2-1 IN MEN’S SOCCER

SYRACUSE, NY -- Two second-half goals propelled the Dolphins of Le Moyne College to a 2-1, come-from-behind victory over the #16 Wildcats of Wilmington University in regional men’s soccer action on Thursday afternoon. Wilmington entered the contest ranked #2 in the East Region (#16 in the nation), while the Dolphins were seventh in the latest NSCAA regional poll.

The Wildcats got on the board just before the first half ended, as senior forward Sargbah Tarpeh took a fee from freshman Justus Henry, and slid the ball into the lower left corner of the net. Tarpeh’s goal came just over a minute before halftime, and sent the ‘Cats into the break holding the slim, 1-0 lead.

The Dolphins wasted little time in equalizing the game, as a foul on a Wilmington defender inside the box gave Le Moyne a penalty kick opportunity during the 53rd minute. Sean Lawlor converted the chance, and tied the game at one. Just four minutes later, Le Moyne’s Angelo Reina scored an unassisted tally off a breakaway and gave the hosts the 2-1 lead. The Wildcats had a few chances to score late in the game, but the visitors saw two attempts sail wide.

Wilmington’s Ethan Kavanagh notched two saves in goal, while Le Moyne’s Steve White had four saves in the shutout victory. The Wildcats held a 13-8 advantage in shots, and also had a 5-3 edge in corner kicks.

Following the game, Wilmington dropped to 4-2 on the season and Le Moyne improved to 3-0-1 overall. The Wildcats return to the field on Saturday afternoon, when they open CACC play at Nyack College. Game time is set for 2:00 PM.

TARPEH’S HAT TRICK POWERS WILMINGTON TO 3-0 WIN OVER NYACK

NYACK, NY -- Senior forward Sargbah Tarpeh netted a hat trick to help lead the #16 Wildcats of Wilmington University over the host Warriors of Nyack College, 3-0 in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference men’s soccer action on Saturday afternoon.

Wilmington wasted little time in getting on the board, as Tarpeh scored his first of three goals on the day, during the 2nd minute of play. Tarpeh converted a penalty kick opportunity and gave the ‘Cats the quick 1-0 lead. That would be all the offense the Wildcats would need, but Tarpeh would later add a little insurance. He scored his second goal during the 34th minute, as he headed home a corner kick off the foot of senior Fatoma Turay to give the visitors a 2-0 lead they would take into halftime. He completed his hat trick at the 58:20 mark, when he finished a feed from freshman Justus Henry.

Junior Duhan Malali (2-0) recorded the shut-out victory, his first of the season, as he notched four saves in goal for Wilmington. Adrian Ibanez notched four saves for Nyack. The shots were tied at 15 apiece, and the Warriors held a 6-4 advantage in corner kicks.

With the win, Wilmington improved to 1-0 in the CACC and 5-2 overall, while Nyack dropped to 0-1 in the conference and 1-3 on the season. The Wildcats return to the pitch on Wednesday afternoon, when they host the Marauders of Millersville University, who enter the contest ranked number three in the latest NSCAA poll. Game time is slated for 4:00 PM.

9/16/2009 – # 3 MILLERSVILLE UNIVERSITY

WILDCATS RALLY TO EDGE # 3 MILLERSVILLE, 3-2 IN OT

NEW CASTLE, DE -- The Wildcats of Wilmington University rallied from two goals down and edged the visiting Marauders of Millersville University, 3-2 in non-conference men’s soccer action on Wednesday afternoon at the Kirkwood Soccer Complex. Millersville entered the contest unbeaten at 5-0 and were ranked #3 in the nation, in the latest NSCAA soccer poll.

The visitors wasted little time in getting on the board as Jeremy Yoder finished off a corner kick from Pat Baffuto just 1:40 into the game. The Marauders would add one more in the first half when Aaron Roland took a pass in the box from Eric Pepper and found the back of the net during the 35th minute. Millersville held onto the 2-0 lead and entered the break holding the two-goal advantage

Wilmington would rally in the second half, and finally broke through when senior forward Sargbah Tarpeh took a pass from sophomore Carsten Wagner and deposited it in the back of the net at the 59:32 mark. Just four minutes later junior forward Jorge Zapata scored the equalizer, knotting the game at two, as he connected off a feed from Tarpeh.

The duo hooked up in overtime, as Tarpeh got the ball just past midfield and took on a few Millersville defenders. Upon getting through the defense, he chipped the ball to Zapata, who gathered possession and tucked the ball past the outstretched arms of the Marauder goalkeeper, sending the ‘Cats away with the thrilling upset victory.

Wilmington’s Duhan Malali (3-0) notched three saves in goal during the second half and overtime period. He came in the second half in relief of Ethan Kavanagh, who had three saves during the first half. Millersville’s Matt Langione recorded two saves for the visitors. The Marauders outshot the ‘Cats by a 10-6 margin, and held a 6-3 edge in corner kicks.

With the win, Wilmington improved to 6-2 on the season, while Millersville dropped to 5-1 overall. The Wildcats return to the pitch on Tuesday afternoon when they travel to take on the Griffins of Chestnut Hill College in CACC contest beginning at 4:00 PM.

PHILADELPHIA, PA -- Senior forward Sargbah Tarpeh tallied a goal and an assist to help lead the Wildcats of Wilmington University to a 2-0 victory over the host Griffins of Chestnut Hill College in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference men’s soccer action on Tuesday afternoon.

Tarpeh put the ‘Cats on the board during the 16th minute, as he one-touched a long pass from junior midfielder Anthony Randazzo, and put it into the back of the net. Seven minutes later, he was back at it again, this time feeding junior Jorge Zapata to put Wilmington ahead, 2-0. That score would hold as final, and the Wildcats remained unbeaten in conference play.

Junior Duhan Malali (4-0) notched two saves in goal as he posted his second shutout of the season. PJ Tucker recorded eight saves in goal for Chestnut Hill, including two point blank saves in the second half. Wilmington outshot the Griffins by a 26-7 margin and held a slim 7-6 edge in corner kicks.

With the win, Wilmington improved to 2-0 in the conference and 7-2 overall, while Chestnut Hill dropped to 0-3-1 in the CACC and 1-5-1 on the season. The Wildcats return to the pitch on Saturday afternoon, when they travel to take on the Deacons of Bloomfield College in a CACC contest beginning at 3:00 PM.

TARPEH’S HAT TRICK POWERS MEN’S SOCCER TO 3-2 WIN OVER BLOOMFIELD

BLOOMFIELD, NJ -- Senior forward Sargbah Tarpeh netted a hat trick to help lead the Wildcats of Wilmington University to a 3-2 victory over the host Deacons of Bloomfield College in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) men’s soccer action on Saturday afternoon at Orange Park.

The first half saw a flurry of action and all of the game’s five goals were scored during the first 45 minutes of action. Just over 11 minutes into the game, Tarpeh scored his first goal of the day, heading home a corner from senior Fatoma Turay. Bloomfield responded with a goal of their own during the 27th minute to tie the game at one, when Jason Bryan tapped a cross from Cristian Ragioza into the back of the net.

Tarpeh netted his second goal at the 34:18 mark, again off a header from a pass from junior Anthony Randazzo. Three minutes later, he completed his hat trick with an unassisted goal after he stole the ball from Bloomfield in the box and deposited it into the back of the net. Bloomfield closed out the first half with a goal, as Edwin Ventura converted a penalty kick opportunity to get the Deacons within one, 3-2.

That would be as close as the hosts would get, as neither team could find the back of the net in the second half. The Wildcat defense held off Bloomfield, and the ‘Cats came away with the victory to remain unbeaten in the conference.

Wilmington’s Duhan Malali (5-0) recorded 11 saves in goal, while Bloomfield’s duo of Steven Alonso and Daniel Valencia had seven saves. Alonso suffered the loss, as he surrendered all three goals in the first half before giving way to Valencia. The Deacons out-shot the Wildcats by a 20-15 margin and held a 54 advantage in corner kicks.

Following the game, Wilmington improved to 3-0 in the CACC and 8-2 overall, while Bloomfield dropped to 1-2-1 in the conference and 2-6 1 on the season. The Wildcats return to the pitch on Wednesday afternoon, when they travel to take on the Tigers of Holy Family University in a CACC contest beginning at 4:00 PM.

MEN’S SOCCER EDGES HOLY FAMILY, 3-2

PHILADELPHIA, PA -- In a battle of two of the top ten teams in the East Region, Wilmington University came out on top, defeating the Tigers of Holy Family University, 3-2 in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) men’s soccer action on Wednesday afternoon. The Wildcats entered the game ranked fourth in the latest NSCAA poll, while the Tigers were ranked ninth.

Wilmington got on the board during the 21st minute when junior Danny Nguyen knocked home a rebound, with the assist coming from classmate Jorge Zapata. Junior Jamal Wiggins made it 2-0 in favor of Wilmington at the 39:16 mark as he converted a penalty kick opportunity. Holy Family cut the deficit to one just before the close of the first half, as Jeffrey Wimsey found the back of the net on a crossing pass from Tim Weglicki with about a minute remaining.

The Tigers tied the game at two, just ten minutes into the second half when Jason Lopez connected from about 10 yards out, off another assist from Weglicki. Wilmington scored the game winner at the 62:38 mark off an own goal. Senior forward Sargbah Tarpeh took on a few Holy Family defenders on the left side before sending a cross towards the box. Junior Joe Stant took a shot, that deflected off a Tiger defender to give the ‘Cats the 3-2 lead, that would hold until the final buzzer sounded.

Junior Duhan Malali (6-0) recorded one save in goal for Wilmington, while Mark Ferretti had six saves for Holy Family. The Wildcats outshot the Tigers by a 19-14 margin, and the corner kicks were knotted at five apiece.

With the win, Wilmington improved to 4-0 in the conference and 9-2 overall, while Holy Family dropped to 1-2-1 in the CACC and 6-3-1 on the season. The Wildcats return to the pitch on Saturday afternoon, when they play host to the Cougars of Caldwell College in a CACC contest beginning at 2:00 PM.

WILMINGTON MEN MAKE IT SIX STRAIGHT, WITH 4-1 WIN OVER CALDWELL

NEW CASTLE, DE -- The Wildcats of Wilmington University defeated the visiting Cougars of Caldwell College, 4-1 in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) men’s soccer action on Saturday afternoon at the Kirkwood Soccer Complex.

Wilmington got on the board during the 33rd minute, when junior Joe Stant found the back of the net off assists from senior Sargbah Tarpeh and junior Chris Simm. That would be all the Wildcats would get, as they went into the break holding the 1-0 lead.

Sophomore forward Nickalus McDonald made it 2-0 in favor of the hosts during the 57th minutes, as he took a ball that was thrown in from senior Probyn Allen and then flicked on from junior Jorge Zapata, and proceeded to deposit it in the back of the net. Almost four minutes later, senior Fatoma Turay laced a shot from 23 yards out into the upper 90 portion of the net to give the ‘Cats a 3-0 lead. Caldwell’s Kieran Bisland ruined the shutout opportunity when he converted a penalty kick opportunity during the 64th minute. Tarpeh would close out the scoring for Wilmington when he received a through ball from McDonald and netted his team-leading 12th goal of the season.

Junior Duhan Malali (7-0) recorded two saves in goal for Wilmington before giving way to sophomore Ethan Kavanagh. Kavanagh notched two saves during the last 17-plus minutes. Caldwell’s John Londono had six saves in the loss. Wilmington out-shot Caldwell by a 16-9 margin, but the Cougars held a 5-4 advantage in corner kicks.

With the win, Wilmington improved to 5-0 in the CACC and 10-2 overall, while Caldwell dropped to 2-2 in the conference and 2-6 on the season. The Wildcats return to the pitch on Tuesday afternoon, when they play host to the rival Lightning of Goldey-Beacom College in a CACC contest beginning at 3:30 PM.

#24 WILMINGTON ROLLS PAST RIVAL LIGHTNING, 5-1

NEW CASTLE, DE -- The Wildcats of Wilmington University started quickly and never slowed down, en-route to a 5-1 rout of the rival Lightning of Goldey-Beacom College, 5-1 in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) men’s soccer action on Tuesday afternoon at the Kirkwood Soccer Complex. Wilmington, ranked number 24 in the latest NSCAA poll, ran their unbeaten streak to seven with the victory.

Just over a minute into the game, the ‘Cats found the back of the net, as junior Chris Simm buried a rebound off a shot from sophomore Nickalus McDonald. One minute later, the hosts made it 2-0 as senior midfielder Fatoma Turay took a ball dropped back from Simm and blasted a shot from just outside the 18. Turay struck again at the 6:57 mark, this time finishing a through pass from senior forward Sargbah Tarpeh. Tarpeh made it 4-0 in favor of the cats during the 12th minute, as he connected off a through ball from McDonald.

The Lightning tallied their lone goal at the 36:54 mark, as Angel Jose Rodriguez took a punt from keeper Ignacio Farias and scored on a breakaway. The 4-1 score would hold until halftime, but the ‘Cats added one more in the second half when McDonald finished a pass from Tarpeh to put the hosts ahead 5-1, a score that would last until the final buzzer sounded.

Wilmington’s sophomore goalkeeper Ethan Kavanagh (4-2) recorded three saves in the win. Ignacio Farias (five saves, four goals against) and Andrew Cairns (six saves, one goal against) split time in goal for Goldey-Beacom. The Wildcats out-shot the Lightning by a convincing 25-8 margin, but trailed in corner kicks, 3-1.

With the win, Wilmington improved to 6-0 in the CACC and 11-2 overall, while Goldey-Beacom dropped to 2-4 in the conference and 4-7 on the season. The Wildcats return to the pitch on Thursday afternoon, when they play host to the Golden Rams of West Chester University in a non-conference match up beginning at 3:30 PM.

#24 WILMINGTON BLANKS WEST CHESTER, 3-0

NEW CASTLE, DE -- The 24th ranked Wildcats of Wilmington University shutout the visiting Golden Rams of West Chester University, 3-0 in non-conference men’s soccer action on Thursday afternoon at the Kirkwood Soccer Complex.

Junior Chris Simm gave the Wildcats all the offense they would need when he connected off a feed from sophomore Nickalus McDonald just over five minutes into the game. The 1-0 Wilmington lead would hold for the remainder of the first half, and the ‘Cats went into the break up by just a goal.

Wilmington added two insurance goals in the second half, the first coming just minutes into the period. Senior forward Sargbah Tarpeh took a pass from Simm, who stole the ball from a Golden Ram defender. Tarpeh then buried it into the back of the net, for his team-leading 14th goal of the season. McDonald added the ‘Cats’ last goal in the 75th minute when he tallied an unassisted goal to put the hosts ahead 3-0.

Sophomore goalkeeper Ethan Kavanagh (5-2) recorded six saves in the shutout victory for Wilmington. The duo of Garret Bleiler (two goals against, two saves), and Peter Weiss (one goal against, one save) shared time in net for West Chester. The Wildcats held a slim edge in shots, 13-12, and had a 7-3 advantage in corner kicks.

With the win, Wilmington improved to 12-2 overall, while West Chester dropped to 3-6-2 on the season. The Wildcats return to the pitch on Saturday evening, when they play host to the Clippers of Concordia College in a CACC contest beginning at 7:30 PM at Caravel Academy. The game, “Score For A Cure”, will feature the ‘Cats in pink uniforms as they team up to fight Breast Cancer.

# 24 WILDCATS ROLL PAST CONCORDIA, 9-0

BEAR, DE -- The 24th ranked Wildcats of Wilmington University rolled past the visiting Clippers of Concordia College, 9-0 in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) men's soccer action on Saturday evening at Caravel Academy. The game, "Score For A Cure", featured the Wildcats in pink uniforms, and along with help from the Delaware Breast Cancer Coalition, the two teamed up to show their support in the fight against Breast Cancer.

Wilmington wasted little time in getting the offense rolling, as senior forward Sargbah Tarpeh took a feed from classmate Fatoma Turay and dribbled past the keeper to make it 1-0 in favor of the 'Cats. Junior Chris Simm scored just five minutes later on a feed from Tarpeh. Tarpeh tallied his second goal of the evening during the 41st mjnute, off a pass from junior Joe Stant, and sent the Wildcats into the break holding a 3-0 lead.

It took only a few minutes into the second half for the 'Cats to start where they left off. Sophomore Nickalus McDonald tallied an unassisted goal just over four minutes in, as he took on seven defenders before ripping a shot past the Clipper goalkeeper. Tarpeh completed the hat trick when he took a pass from Turay, and proceeded to take on the keeper one-on-one, went around and booted the ball into the back of the net at the 62 minute mark. Just two minutes later junior Jorge Zapata made it 6-0 in favor of the green and white, as he connected off a feed from Turay. During the 69the minute senior Dave Dease converted a penalty kick opportunity. In the last ten minutes of the game, Socrates Joachim and CJ Prettyman each tallied goals to round out the scoring for Wilmington.

Junior goalkeeper Duhan Malali (8-0) recorded two saves in almost 64 minutes, before giving way to sophomore Ehtan Kavanagh for the remainder of the game. Giovanni Olarte had four saves in the loss for Concordia. The Wildcats held a convincing 24-6 edge in shots, including a 2-1 advantage in corner kicks.

With the win, the Wildcats improved to 7-0 in the CACC and 13-2 overall, and ran their unbeaten streak to nine games. Concordia fell to 2-4 in the conference and 2-9 on the season. Wilmington returns to action on Wednesday afternoon, when they play host to the Rams of Philadelphia University in a CACC contest beginning at 3:00 PM.

#23 WILMINGTON HOLDS OFF PHILADELPHIA, 4-3 IN MEN'S SOCCER

NEW CASTLE, DE -- The 23rd ranked Wildcats of Wilmington University held off a strong effort from the visiting Rams of Philadelphia University, and came away with the 4-3 victory in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) men’s soccer action on Wednesday afternoon at the Kirkwood Complex. The win helped the ‘Cats unbeaten streak stretch to ten games.

Wilmington struck early, as senior forward Sargbah Tarpeh took a feed from junior Chris Simm, and took on the keeper. Tarpeh deposited the ball in the back of the net just forty seconds in, and gave the ‘Cats the quick 1-0 lead. The Rams tied the game at one during the 18th minute when Sean Crossland took a through ball in the 18 yard box and scored. The Wildcats got back on top during the 36th minute as junior Jorge Zapata connected on a through ball from Tarpeh. Sophomore Nickalus McDonald scored just three minutes later to make it 3-1 in favor of the green and white, when he finished a pass from Tarpeh.

The Wildcats struck first in the second half, as Tarpeh received a through ball from McDonald, and beat the keeper for his second goal of the game. Philadelphia started a charge shortly thereafter, and cut the lead to 4-2 when Travis Lobb took a chest ball from Ryan Purnell and found the back of the net at the 53 minute mark. Just four minutes later, Kristoffer Perez scored off another assist from Purnell (his third of the game), and trimmed the deficit to 4-3. Wilmington held on over the last thirty minutes, and came away with the important conference victory.

Duhan Malali (9-0) recorded six saves in goal for Wilmington, while Buddy Custer notched two saves for Philadelphia, The Rams outshot the Wildcats by a 16-10 margin, but the ‘Cats held a 6-3 advantage in corner kicks. Wilmington returns to the pitch on Saturday afternoon, when they play host to the 10th ranked Chargers of Dominican College, the top team in the East Region, in a CACC contest beginning at 2:00 PM.

#14 WILMINGTON BLANKS LOCK HAVEN, 2-0

LOCK HAVEN, PA -- The 14th ranked Wildcats of Wilmington University ran their unbeaten streak to 11 games, as they blanked the host Eagles of Lock Haven University, 2-0 in non-conference men’s soccer action on Tuesday afternoon at Hubert Jack Stadium.

Both goals for Wilmington came in the opening half, and the first came off the foot of sophomore Nickalus McDonald. McDonald took a long through ball from senior Sargbah Tarpeh, and beat the keeper to the far post to give the ‘Cats a 1-0 lead at the 28 minute mark. Sophomore Ryan Doyle gave the Wildcats a little breathing room just before the first half ended, as he connected on a cross from junior Joe Stant. The 2-0 lead would hold until the final buzzer sounded.

Wilmington’s Duhan Malali (10-0) recorded six saves in the shutout victory, while the duo of Chad Badorf and Chris Custer split time in goal for Lock Haven. Badorf gave up both goals and had no saves in the first half, and Custer notched one save in the second stanza. The Eagles outshout the Wildcats by a 15-7 margin and held a 7-3 advantage in corner kicks.

With the win, Wilmington improved to 15-2 overall, while Lock Haven dropped to 5-9-2 on the season. The Wildcats return to the pitch on Thursday afternoon for a much anticipated CACC matchup with the 18th ranked Chargers of Dominican College. Game time is slated for 3:00 PM at the Kirkwood Complex.

#14 WILMINGTON SHUTS OUT # 18 DOMINICAN, 2-0

NEW CASTLE, DE -- In a battle of two of the East Region’s top teams, the 14th ranked Wildcats of Wilmington University got the best of the visiting 18th ranked Chargers of Dominican College, 2-0 in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) men’s soccer action on Thursday afternoon at the Kirkwood Soccer Complex.

The two teams struggled to find their pace offensively in the first half, and headed into the break knotted at zero. Minutes into the second half, Wilmington got on the board as senior Sargbah Tarpeh knocked home a corner kick from classmate Fatoma Turay. Tarpeh headed the ball off the crossbar, and after the miss, buried his second opportunity to give the ‘Cats the 1-0 lead. Tarpeh struck again at the 78:30 mark, when he converted a penalty kick opportunity and put the Wildcats up 2-0. That would be all the offense the green and white would need, as they held on for the important conference and regional victory.

Wilmington’s Duhan Malali (11-0) notched four saves in goal, while Brandon Heembrock notched five saves in goal for Dominican. Both teams had 15 shots apiece, but the ‘Cats had the edge in corner kicks, 11-6.

With the win, Wilmington improved to 9-0 in the CACC and 16-2 overall, and ran off their 12th straight victory. Dominican fell to 6-2-1 in the conference and 11-2-2 on the season. The Wildcats return to the pitch on Saturday afternoon, when they play host to the Golden Falcons of Felician College in a CACC contest beginning at 2:00 PM.

NEW CASTLE, DE -- The 14th ranked Wildcats of Wilmington University edged the visiting Golden Falcons of Felician College, 2-1 in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) men’s soccer action on Saturday afternoon at the Kirkwood Soccer Complex.

Wilmington got on the board during the 13th minute when senior midfielder Fatoma Turay sent a through ball just outside the 18 yard box to sophomore Nickalus McDonald. McDonald one-touched the ball around the keeper, then poked it into the back of the net to give the ‘Cats the 1-0 lead. Just over five minutes later, Felician tied the game at one when Carlos Canido buried a free kick opportunity into the upper corner of the net. Neither team would score again in the first half, and the two squads headed into the break knotted at one.

The score would remain tied at one for the majority of the second half. Wilmington finally broke through in the 85th minute as junior Chris Simm took a shot that was saved by Felician keeper David LoBue, but the ball came loose and Simm knocked it home to give the ‘Cats the 2-1 lead. That score would hold, and the Wildcats clinched the regular season CACC title with their 13th straight victory.

Wilmington’s Duhan Malali (12-0) recorded three saves in goal, while LoBue had six saves for Felician. The Wildcats out-shot the Golden Falcons by a 12-10 margin and held a 5-1 advantage in corner kicks.

With the win, Wilmington improved to 10-0 in the CACC and 17-2 overall, while Felician dropped to 1-8-1 in the conference and 3-12-1 on the season. The Wildcats close out the regular season on Wednesday afternoon, when they play host to the Eagles of Post University in a CACC contest beginning at 3:30 PM.

#12 MEN’S SOCCER COMPLETES CACC UNDEFEATED REGULAR SEASON WITH 3-1 WIN OVER POST

NEW CASTLE, DE -- The 12th ranked Wildcats of Wilmington University completed an undefeated regular season in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) with a 3-1 victory over the visiting Eagles of Post University in men’s soccer action on Wednesday afternoon at the Kirkwood Complex.

Post struck first, when Maurice Johnson tallied an unassisted goal at the 17:40 mark. The Wildcats tied the game during the 36th minute as junior Joe Stant finished a through ball from classmate Jorge Zapata. The game-winner came during the 59th minute as senior Probyn Allen knocked home a corner kick from classmate Fatoma Turay. Sophomore Nickalus McDonald added an insurance goal at the 69:12 mark, off a through pass from Zapata.

Wilmington’s Duhan Malali (13-0) recorded seven saves in goal, while Errol Reid had four saves for Post. The Wildcats out-shot the Eagles by a 12-11 margin and held a 6-3 advantage in corner kicks.

With the win, Wilmington closed out their regular season at 11-0 in the CACC and 18-2 overall, while Post dropped to 6-4-1 in the conference and 7-8-2 on the season. The Wildcats won the CACC regular season title, and are the #1 seed in the upcoming CACC Tournament. Wilmington hosts the #8 seed Goldey-Beacom College on Monday at the Kirkwood Complex at 3:00 PM.

WILMINGTON MEN ADVANCE TO CACC SEMIFINALS WITH 2-0 WIN OVER GOLDEY-BEACOM

NEW CASTLE, DE -- The top-seeded Wildcats of Wilmington University advanced to the semifinals of the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) men’s soccer tournament with a 2-0 victory over #8 Goldey-Beacom College in the opening round on Monday afternoon at the Kirkwood Soccer Complex.

Wilmington, entered the match ranked number 12 in the latest NSCAA poll, and also held a regional ranking of two (NSCAA) and three (NCAA) in the East.

The two teams battled to a scoreless first half, despite quality opportunities from Wilmington, as the Wildcats kept the pressure on the Lightning half of the pitch for much of the period. The ‘Cats finally broke through six minutes into the second half as senior forward Sargbah Tarpeh played a through ball back through the 18 yard box, where it found the foot of sophomore Nickalus McDonald. McDonald let a one-timer rip, and found the back of the net to give the green and white the 1-0 advantage. Less than two minutes later, senior Probyn Allen took a pass from classmate Dave Dease, and let a shot loose from just above midfield. The ball curled over the Lightning keeper and gave the Wildcats some insurance with a 2-0 lead.

Wilmington’s Duhan Malali (14-0) made one save in the shutout victory, while Ignacio Farias (two goals against, four saves, 78 minutes) and Andrew Cairns (two saves, 12 minutes) shared time in goal for Goldey-Beacom. The Wildcats out-shot the Lightning by a 17-6 margin, and held a 9-1 advantage in corner kicks.

With the win, Wilmington’s 14th straight, the Wildcats improved to 19-2 on the season, while Goldey-Beacom closed out the books on their 2009 campaign with a 6-12 mark. Wilmington advances to the semifinals of the CACC Tournament, hosting the fifth-seeded Deacons of Bloomfield College on Wednesday at 11:00 AM at Kirkwood.

WILDCATS UPSET BY BLOOMFIELD IN PENALTY KICKS

NEW CASTLE, DE -- Top seeded and No. 13 nationally-ranked Wilmington University was upset in a shootout by No. 5 Bloomfield College today in the semi-final round of the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Men's Soccer Tournament in New Castle, DE. No. 7 Nyack College also scored an upset over No. 6 Post University by a 1-0 decision. The Deacons and Warriors will meet for the conference championship on Saturday, Nov. 7, at 11:00 am at the Kirkwood Soccer Complex.

Bloomfield (8-10-2) and Wilmington played to a 0-0, double overtime tie before having to settle things in a shootout. Both clubs connected on their first two kicks before Bloomfield junior goalie Steven Alonso made a spectacular diving save on Wilmington's third attempt. After sophomore Edwin Ventura scored on BC's third try, Wilmington junior Jamal Wiggins hit the cross bar with his attempt to leave Bloomfield up, 3-2. Bloomfield's Cristian Raigoza followed by finding the back of the net to give the Deacons the huge upset behind a 4-2 edge in the shootout.

Wilmington (19-2-1) junior goalie Duhan Malali made 10 saves on the day, while Alonso stopped seven shots for the Deacons. The loss snaps Wilmington's 15-match win streak.

Wilmington now waits to see if they will continue their season at the NCAA East Regional Tournament. Selections will be announced on Monday, November 9th.

Goals were also hard to come by in the afternoon match between Post and Nyack. The lone goal came in the 11th minute on a penalty kick by junior Daniel Ocampo, after a Post handball in the box. The Warriors were able to get the win despite getting out-shot, 19-6, by the Eagles. Warrior junior goalkeeper Adrian Ibanez made eight saves on the day.

Post ends the season with an 8-9-2 mark, while NC is now 9-11-1.

‘CATS MAGICAL SEASON ENDS WITH 1-0 LOSS TO SOUTHERN NEW HAMPSHIRE IN DOUBLE OT

MANCHESTER, NH -- The second-seeded Wildcats of Wilmington University saw their magical season come to an end on Saturday afternoon, as they fell 1-0 in heartbreaking fashion to the third-seeded Penmen of Southern New Hampshire University in double overtime. The game was played at Larkin Field on the campus of Southern New Hampshire in a steady, driving rain.

Wilmington, ranked 13th nationally in the latest NSCAA/adidas poll, was making their first appearance in the NCAA Men’s Soccer East Regional Tournament, while Southern New Hampshire (ranked 22nd), was making its 15th appearance in NCAA postseason play. The Penmen (14-4-3) now advance to the NCAA East Regional Final next weekend, where they will take on the winner of Le Moyne College and Franklin Pierce University.

The two teams battled through over 100 minutes of scoreless play before Southern New Hampshire was finally able to break through. In the 103rd minute, Michael Adam got off a corner kick that was headed home by PJ Burnette to send the Penmen off with the thrilling 1-0 victory.

The Wildcats had a few chances to score in regulation, but were unable to find the back of the net. Their best opportunities came when two shots found iron. In the first half, a shot by sophomore Nickalus McDonald clanked off the crossbar, and later in the second half, senior forward Sargbah Tarpeh found himself just as unlucky as his attempt knocked off the post.

Junior goalkeeper Duhan Malali (14-1-1) was outstanding in net for Wilmington, as he recorded six saves. Joey Kapinos had one save for the Penmen. Southern New Hampshire out-shot the Wildcats by a 19-7 margin and held a 6-3 advantage in corner kicks.

Wilmington’s Sargbah Tarpeh, Fatoma Turay, Dave Dease, and Tony DiVirgilio were named to the Regional All-Tournament Team for their play.

The game saw the college careers of Wilmington’s five seniors come to an end, including CACC Player of the Year, Sargbah Tarpeh. Tarpeh ends his career as the most decorated soccer player in school history. Also playing their last game for the green and white were All-CACC midfielder Fatoma Turay, All-Conference defender Dave Dease, and midfielders Probyn Allen and Jose Coronado.

Wilmington ends the 2009 campaign with a stellar 19-3-1 overall record, including a perfect 11-0 mark in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC). The season saw many highs, including the highest national ranking in school history (9th), highest regional ranking in program history (1st), and six members honored with All-Conference awards. Head Coach Nick Papanicolas was named CACC Coach of the Year, and the squad claimed the CACC regular season title.
