WILMINGTON MEN OPEN SEASON WITH 5-1 LOSS TO QUEENS
FLUSHING, NY -- It was a rough start to the 2011 soccer season for the Wildcats of Wilmington University, as they suffered a convincing 5-1 defeat at the hands of the host Knights of Queens College in non-conference men’s soccer action on Thursday afternoon.
Both teams were playing in their season opener, and it was the Wildcats who struck first. Sophomore Tom Quaranta connected off a feed from junior Jose Hernandez just twelve minutes into the game. The lead was short lived, as Queens’ Daniel Stoker added two goals over the next ten minutes to give the Knights a 2-1 advantage they would never relinquish.
Stoker would add another just three minutes into the second half to complete the hat trick, and Peter Touros and Santiago Bedoya each tallied goals in the closing ten minutes to put the Wildcats away.
Wilmington’s freshman goalkeeper Spyros Stergiotis notched six saves in goal, while Queens’ Demetrios Touros recorded three stops. The Knights out-shot the Wildcats by a 17-13 margin, while the corner kicks were tied at four apiece.
Following the game, Wilmington dropped to 0-1 to start the season, while Queens improved to 1-0. The Wildcats are right back in action tomorrow afternoon, when the travel to take on the Falcons of Bentley University in a non-conference tilt beginning at 2:00 PM.
MEN’S SOCCER BATTLES BENTLEY TO 1-1 TIE
WALTHAM, MA -- Wilmington University battled the host Falcons of Bentley University to a 1-1 tie in non-conference men’s soccer action on Friday afternoon.
The Wildcats struck first in the 19th minute off the foot of junior Kresimir Nurnberger, set up by sophomore Eddie Kowalo. Kowalo fed a centering pass to Nurnberger from the left wing to the goal line, giving Nurnberger a tap-in goal.
The Falcons though answered back with just two seconds left before the end of the first half. Boisvert took possession from a long-ball over the top of Wilmington's defense for a breakaway goal, tying the game at one.
The best two chances of overtime both belonged to Bentley's Brennan DaCosta. With just over a minute left in the first overtime he hit the post. With four minutes left in the second overtime, DaCosta took a chip from senior Eric Ulmer on the right post, but his shot was saved by Wilmington goalie Spyros Stergiotis.
Bentley held a slight advantage in shots, 12-10, and had four corner kicks to Wilmington's one. The Wildcats’ John Allen recorded three saves and allowed one goal during the first half, and was relieved by Stergiotis, who notched two saves as he closed out the game.
Following the game, Wilmington’s record now stands at 0-1-1, while Bentley is currently 0-0-1 on the year. The Wildcats continue their road trip on Sunday afternoon, when they travel to take on the Ravens of Franklin Pierce University. Game time is slated for 1:00 PM.
WILDCATS EDGED BY #6 FRANKLIN PIERCE, 1-0 IN MEN’S SOCCER
RINDGE, NH -- The #6 ranked Franklin Pierce University men’s soccer used a late goal to edge the visiting Wildcats of Wilmington University, 1-0 in non-conference men’s soccer action on Sunday afternoon at Sodexo Field.
The Ravens’ Tom Reilly scored the game-winner in the 80th minute, as he finished a header pass from Trent Roy, which came from off a corner kick. Wilmington struggled to find their rhythm offensively all afternoon, and didn’t get off a shot until there were 15 minutes off in regulation. It was the Wildcats’ only shot on the day, and it was turned away by the Franklin Pierce goalkeeper.
Wilmington freshman keeper Spryos Stergiotis notched four saves, while Franklin Pierce’s Vinny Papageorgiou turned away the only Wildcat attempt. The Ravens held a distinct 16-1 advantage in shots, and also had a 7-2 edge in corner kicks.
Following the game, Wilmington dropped to 0-2-1 on the season, while Franklin Pierce improved to 2-0 to start the year. The Wildcats are back in action on Saturday afternoon, when they travel to take on Merrimack College in a game beginning at 4:00 PM.
‘CATS BATTLE TO 1-1 TIE WITH MERRIMACK IN MEN’S SOCCER
NORTH ANDOVER, MA -- Wilmington University battled to a 1-1 tie with the host Warriors of Merrimack College in non-conference men’s soccer action on Saturday afternoon .
The Wildcats were the first squad to get on the board, as sophomore midfielder Eddie Kowalo headed home a corner kick from junior Kresimir Nurnberger during the 28th minute. The 1-0 lead was short lived however, as Merrimack tied the game nine minutes later. Matt McFadden kicked in a rebound at the 36:29 mark, to tie the game at one.
That would be all the offense either team would muster, as the teams battle to a 1-1 tie after 110 minutes of action. The Warriors had a flurry of action in the overtime periods, as the hosts got off two shots during the first extra session that were turned away by Wildcat goalkeeper Spyros Stergiotis. Merrimack had two chances in the second overtime period, but both sailed high, and allowed the ‘Cats to hold onto the tie.
Stergiotis recorded five saves for Wilmington in goal, while Mattias Drummond notched three saves for Merrimack. The Wildcats were out-shot by a 16-9 margin, and the Warriors held a 7-5 advantage in corner kicks.
Following the game, Wilmington now stands at 0-2-2 on the season, while Merrimack is 1-1-2 overall. The Wildcats are back in action on Wednesday afternoon, when they open the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) portion of their schedule with a home game against Philadelphia University. 'CATS BLANK PHILADELPHIA 2-0 FOR FIRST WIN OF SEASON
NEW CASTLE, DE -- The Wildcats of Wilmington University picked up their first win of the season, as they blanked the visiting Philadelphia University Rams, 2-0 in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) men's soccer action on Wednesday afternoon at the Kirkwood Complex.
Sophomore Matko Novak put the ‘Cats on the board during the 35th minute, as he knocked home a rebound off a save from the Philadelphia keeper. That gave the Wildcats a 1-0 lead, and would prove to be the eventual game winner, as Wilmington kept the Rams at bay the entire afternoon. Sophomore Tom Quaranta added a little insurance during the 55th minute for the hosts, when he took a through pass from junior Kresimir Nurnberger and ripped a shot to the far post from 24 yards out. Quaranta’s goal gave Wilmington a 2-0 lead that would hold until the final whistle.
Freshman goalkeeper Spryos Stergiotis notched six saves in his first career shutout, while the Rams’ Alex Haston turned away three shots in defeat. The Wildcats held a 14-12 edge in shots, and also had a 3-1 advantage in corner kicks.

NYACK, NY -- Down 3-0 after one half of play, the Wildcats of Wilmington University tallied two second half goals, but still fell just short as they were defeated by the host Warriors of Nyack College, 3-2 in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) men’s soccer action at Moseley Field.
The Warriors jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the 21st minute, when Toni Mutschler headed home a pass from Gavin Penny. Nyack made it 2-0 during the 37th minute as Felix Horn scored on a header off a pass from Marco Likos. Just a minute later, Martin Narvaez made it 3-0 Nyack, as he converted a penalty kick opportunity.
Wilmington would not go down without a fight, as the ‘Cats played a stronger second half. They finally got on the board during the 55th minute when sophomore Eddie Kowalo took a pass from junior Kresimir Nurnberger and beat the Warrior keeper on a breakaway. Kowalo struck again at the 70:24 mark, as he finished a pass from sophomore Jose Hernandez to get the ‘Cats within one, 3-2. That would be as close as they would get, as Nyack held them at bay for the remainder of the game and held on for the conference victory.
The Wildcats’ Spyros Stergiotis recorded five saves in goal, while Adrian Ibanez turned away one shot for Nyack. The Warriors held a 12-9 edge in shots, while Wilmington had the advantage in corner kicks, 8-4.

LAFAYETTE HILL, PA -- The Wildcats of Wilmington University blanked the host Griffins of Chestnut Hill College, 3-0 in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) men’s soccer action on Tuesday afternoon at Victory Field #1.
It didn’t take long for the Wildcats to strike as sophomore Jose Hernandez finished a pass from junior Ray Kuemmer just four minutes into the game. Kuemmer struck again during the 29th minute, as he netted an unassisted tally. Wilmington made it 3-0 at the 34:52 mark when sophomore Eddie Kowalo knocked home a rebound from a Manny Payton shot.
Freshman goalkeeper Spyros Stergiotis recorded four saves before giving way to senior Russell Dobos, who made one stop. The two combined on the Wildcats’ second shutout of the season. Mike Goldstein had five saves in defeat, before turning the rains over to Dave Sullivan (one save) for the final 11 minutes. ‘CATS RALLY TO STUN #20 MILLERSVILLE, 4-2 IN MEN’S SOCCER
NEW CASTLE, DE -- Junior midfielder Ray Kuemmer netted one goal and added an assist to lead the Wildcats of Wilmington University to a 4-2 comeback win over the 20th ranked Marauders of Millersville University in non-conference men’s soccer action on Sunday afternoon.
The Maruaders entered the game, ranked 20th in the latest NSCAA Division II National Poll, and quickly took action to start the game. Just three minute in, Ethan Daubert knocked home a missed clear on a corner kick from Eric Pepper. Millersville struck again during the 11th minute, as Aaron Roland connected on a header pass from Matt Kadoch. From that point on, it was all Wildcats, as the hosts turned on the pressure.
Wilmington finally broke thru during the 30th minute, as junior Kresimir Nurnberger knocked home a rebound off his own penalty kick opportunity. The Wildcats tied the game right before the end of the first half when Kuemmer ripped a free kick from just outside the 18, that curled into the back of the net.
The ‘Cats took the lead early in the second half, when Kuemmer played a beautiful through pass to sophomore Eddie Kowalo, who beat the Millersville keeper with the eventual game winner. Wilmington made it 4-2, and added an insurance goal during the 64th minute when sophomore Manny Payton received a through ball from classmate Jose Hernandez, and played it over the Marauder goalkeeper, who came out to challenge. The Wildcats held on for the remainder of the period, and came away with the huge upset victory.
Wilmington’s Spyros Stergiotis recorded three saves in goal, while Millersville’s Brad Benzing turned away four shots. Benzing had entered the contest with an impressive 0.22 goals against average, but the Wildcat attack did what it could to spoil that average, netting a season-high four goals.
With the win, Wilmington improved to 3-3-2 overall, while Millersville suffered their first loss of the season and dropped to 5-1. The Wildcats are back in action on Tuesday afternoon, when they travel to take on the Tigers of Holy Family University in a CACC contest beginning at 4:00 PM.

NEW CASTLE, DE -- Five second half goals by the University of Bridgeport led the Purple Knights to a convincing 6-2 victory over the Wilmington University Wildcats in non-conference men’s soccer action on Thursday afternoon at the Kirkwood Complex.
Bridgeport (4-4) scored the game’s first goal right before the end of the first half, as Markus Naglestad chipped a ball that the Wilmington keeper mishandled. The Purple Knights opened the second half with three unanswered goals over the first 17 minutes. Naglestad netted the first, as he connected on a through pass from Andreas Blanke. Patric Brundin then finished a pass from Naglestad to make it 3-0 in favor of the visitors. Josh Pellegrini finished a free kick from Naglestad, which gave Bridgeport a 4-0 lead.
Wilmington (3-4-3) finally got on the board during the 65th minute when Matko Novak connected on a through pass from Kresimir Nurnberger. Five minutes later, Naglestad struck again, as he converted a penalty kick opportunity, putting the visitors up 5-1. Wilmington (3-1-1 CACC/4-4-3) was not fazed by the Eagles, who entered the game ranked number 18 in the latest NSCAA Division II National Poll, and got on the board just two minutes in to the game. Payton took a through ball from Kowalo and deposited it in the back of the net to give the Wildcats a 1-0 lead. That one-goal advantage would hold until haflftime, as the ‘Cats went into the break up by one.
The Wildcats’ Kresimir Nurnberger received a through pass from Ray Kuemmer during the 62nd minute, and chipped it over the Post keeper’s head. Just six minutes later Kowalo then finished a pass from Payton to make it 3-0 in favor of the green and white. Tommy Quaranta rounded out the scoring during the 89th minute as he stole the ball from an Eagle defender and buried it in the back of the net.

NEW CASTLE, DE -- Wilmington University battled to a 1-1 tie against the visiting Chargers of Dominican College in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) men’s soccer action on Tuesday afternoon at the Kirkwood Complex.
The Wildcats (3-1-2 CACC/4-4-4) netted the game’s first goal during the 30th minute as sophomore Manny Payton headed home a pass from junior Kresimir Nurnberger. Wilmington would hold the 1-0 advantage for the remainder of the first half.
Dominican (3-1-2 CACC/4-3-3) found the equalizer early in the second half as Jorge Zubillaga took a pass off a free kick from Pedro DeAraujo, and ripped a shot from close to 23 yards out that found the back of the net. The two teams would remain tied throughout regulation, and the game went into overtime. The Chargers put the pressure on in both overtime periods, registering six shots, but it was the strong play of Wildcat keeper Spyros Stergiotis who kept the hosts alive. Stergiotis recorded four saves in the two extra sessions, and enabled Wilmington to escape with a draw.
Wilmington had a 16-12 edge in shots, and also held an 8-6 advantage in corner kicks. Stergiotis notched five saves for the match, while Dominican’s Brandon Heembrock turned away four shots for the visitors.

WILMINGTON MEN ROUT RIVAL LIGHTNING, 11-0
NEW CASTLE, DE -- The Wildcats of Wilmington University erupted for 11 goals in a rout of the rival Lightning of Goldey-Beacom College in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) men’s soccer action at the Kirkwood Complex on Thursday afternoon.
The game was scoreless after twenty minutes of play, but it didn’t take long after that for the game to get out of reach. The ‘Cats (4-1-2 CACC/5-4-4) netted five goals over the next twenty minutes of play, and later added six more in the second half as they easily cruised to the victory.
Eddie Kowalo, Manny Payton, and Zach Hinte each posted two goals and an assist, while Tommy Quaranta and Ray Kuemmer added a goal and an assist apiece. Wilmington also received goals from Jose Hernandez, Shaheen Rahmani, and Mike Lewis. Kresimir Nurnberger and Vitor Lima each chipped in with a pair of assists.
A trio of keepers combined on the shutout, with Spryos Stergiotis (two saves) earning the win. Ignacio Farias (four saves) and Carlos Meinhard (four saves) split time in goal for Goldey-Beacom (0-5 CACC/0-7). Wilmington had a 38-5 advantage in shots, and also held an 8-1 edge in corner kicks.
The Wildcats are back in action on Saturday evening when they host their annual Breast Cancer Awareness Game at Caravel Academy. Game time is slated for 7:30 PM and all fans are encouraged to wear pink.
MEN’S SOCCER RUNS UNBEATEN STREAK TO FOUR WITH 3-1 WIN OVER CLIPPERS
BEAR, DE -- The Wildcats of Wilmington University ran their unbeaten streak to four with a 3-1 victory over the visiting Clippers of Concordia College in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) men’s soccer action on Saturday evening at Bob People’s Stadium.
Wilmington (5-1-2 CACC/6-4-4) got on the board during the 30th minute as sophomore Tom Quaranta finished a through pass from classmate Eddie Kowalo. The Wildcats would hold the 1-0 lead through halftime, and did not wait long to add on once the second half began. Just four minutes in, Kowalo connected on a pass from sophomore Manny Payton to make it 2-0 in favor of the ‘Cats. Less than four minutes later, it was 3-0 Wilmington, when Quaranta struck again, this time off a free kick from junior Kresimir Nurnberger. Concordia (2-4 CACC/2-9) added an unassisted goal by Daniel Espinoza during the 62nd minute, but that would be all the offense the Clippers could muster up as the Wildcats held on for the victory.
Spyros Stergiotis made three saves in goal for Wilmington, while Paul Wavell turned away nine shots for Concordia. The Wildcats out-shot the Clippers by a 20-9 margin, and held a 3-1 advantage in corner kicks.
Wilmington wore special pink uniforms for the game, as the ‘Cats participated in their annual “Score for a Cure” Breast Cancer Awareness Game.

MEN’S SOCCER HAS FOUR-GAME UNBEATEN STREAK SNAPPED WITH 1-0 LOSS TO DOWLING
BROOKHAVEN, NY -- Wilmington University saw their four-game unbeaten streak come to a halt, following a 1-0 loss at the hands of the host Golden Lions of Dowling College in non-conference men’s soccer action on Wednesday evening.
In a game that was played under a steady downpour for the entire 90 minutes, neither team could get on the board during the first half. Dowling (5-4-3) scored the game’s lone goal just over two minutes into the start of the second period, as Gerassimos Magoulas finished a cross from Ajani Jones to give the Golden Lions a 1-0 lead. That would be the only offense for the game, and Dowling was able to hold on for the one-goal victory.
Spyros Stergiotis notched three saves in goal for Wilmington (6-5-4), while Corey Desmond turned away five shots for Dowling. The Wildcats out-shot the Golden Lions by a 15-8 margin, and held a lopsided 9-0 advantage in corner kicks.

NURNBERGER’S 2-OT GOAL COMPLETES STUNNING 5-4 COMEBACK WIN AGAINST BLOOMFIELD
ORANGE, NJ -- Trailing 4-0 at the half, Wilmington University netted four second-half goals and scored the game-winner in the second overtime to stun the host Deacons of Bloomfield College with a 5-4 comeback victory in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) men’s soccer action on Saturday afternoon.
It was all Bloomfield to start the game, as Terry Gibbs tallied a natural hat trick over the game’s first 39 minutes. All three of Gibbs’ goals were assisted by Edgar Aguilar. The Deacons added one more just before the end of the first half to make it 4-0, when Juan Ramirez finished a feed from Gibbs.
Wilmington wasted little time in getting things started in the second half, as Manny Payton headed home a cross from Kresimir Nurnberger just 2:32 into the period. The game remained 4-1 in favor of Bloomfield for most of the second half, but in the 82nd minute the Wildcats cranked up the pressure. Senior Mike Lewis converted a Deacon turnover into a goal, and cut the lead to 4-2. Just three minutes later Eddie Kowalo netted a breakaway tally off a pass from Nurnberger to make it 4-3. The Wildcats completed the incredible comeback and tied the game at four during the 88th minute as Tom Quaranta headed in a corner kick from Ray Kuemmer.
After a scoreless first overtime session, the stage was set for Nurnberger’s heroics. Just 1:21 into the second overtime frame, Kowalo set Nurnberger up with a look from about 10 yards out. Nurnberger ripped off a shot and buried the ball into the back of the net, sending the Wildcats off with the improbable, come-from-behind victory.
Wilmington’s John Allen (five saves) earned the win in relief of Spyros Stergiotis (one saves, four goals). Bloomfield’s Daniel Hyde turned away eight saves for the hosts. Wilmington held an 18-15 advantage in shots, and also had a 7-6 edge in corner kicks.

FELICIAN EDGES WILMINGTON MEN, 2-1 IN DOUBLE OT
NEW CASTLE, DE -- Felician College dealt Wilmington University a 2-1, double-overtime loss in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) men’s soccer action on Tuesday afternoon at the Kirkwood Complex.
After a scoreless first half, the Golden Falcons were the first to get on the board, as Daniel Camargo ripped a shot that deflected off a Wildcat defender into the back of the net. That goal, which came during the 85th minute, gave the visitors a 1-0 lead. Wilmington would not go down without a fight, and sophomore Tom Quaranta netted the equalizer just three minutes later to tie the game at one. Quaranta received a through pass from junior Ray Kuemmer just inside the 18 yard box, and tied the game at one.
Neither team scored in the first overtime period and it wasn’t until the 109th minute when Felician scored the game-winner. Keleena Onyeaka gave the Golden Falcons a huge win, as he scored off a free kick from Camargo.
John Allen had two saves in goal for Wilmington (6-2-2 CACC/7-6-4), while Anthony Tsouhnikas turned away four shots for Felician (4-5 CACC/7-7). The Wildcats had a slight edge in shots, 18-17, and held a 10-5 advantage in corner kicks.
The ‘Cats close out their regular season on Saturday afternoon when they play host to the Cougars of Caldwell College in CACC action. Game time is slated for 2:30 PM.
WILDCAT MEN CLOSE OUT REGULAR SEASON WITH 3-1 WIN OVER CALDWELL
NEW CASTLE, DE -- The Wildcats of Wilmington University closed out their regular season with a 3-1 victory over the visiting Cougars of Caldwell College in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) men’s soccer action on Saturday afternoon at the Kirkwood Complex.
Wilmington (7-2-2 CACC/8-6-4) jumped out to a 2-0 lead after the game’s first 26 minutes. Sophomore Eddie Kowalo knocked home a rebound during the 15th minute that was initially saved by the Caldwell keeper. Junior Ray Kuemmer made it 2-0 in favor of the hosts when he knocked home a cross off the foot of classmate Kresimir Nurnberger at the 25:36 mark. That advantage would hold as the ‘Cats took the two goal lead into the break.
Caldwell (3-5-1 CACC/6-7-2) opened the second half with a quick goal just under two minutes in, as Steve Petrosino connected off a free kick from Mosiah Whyte. The Cougars mounted a little more pressure throughout the period, and held a man advantage for the final 18 minutes as a Wildcat was sent off with a red-card. The Wilmington defense played solid, and sophomore Tom Quaranta gave the ‘Cats a little breathing room in the 89th minute, as he finished a through pass from Kuemmer. The Wildcats held on, sending them into the upcoming CACC playoffs with a little momentum.
Wilmington’s Russell Dobos notched three saves as he picked up his first win of the season. Brian Agostini recorded seven stops for Caldwell. The Wildcats out-shot the Cougars by a 188 margin, and had a 7-3 advantage in corner kicks.
The ‘Cats return to the pitch next Monday afternoon, as they will host an opening round playoff game on Halloween at Kirkwood. The opponent and the game time are still to be determined.
#2 WILMINGTON HAS SEASON END WITH 4-0 DEFEAT TO #7 NYACK
NEW CASTLE, DE -- The second-seeded Wildcats of University saw their season come to a crashing halt, after a 4-0 defeat at the hands of the seventh-seeded Nyack College Warriors in the quarterfinal round of the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) men’s soccer playoffs on Monday afternoon at the Kirkwood Complex.
Nyack struck first, as Gavin Penny ripped a shot that deflected off Wilmington defender Mike Loaiza into the back of the net, giving the Warriors a 1-0 lead in the 24th minute. That score would hold for the remainder of the first half, despite a flurry of chances from the visitors.
The Warriors struck again just two minutes into the second half as keeper Adrian Ibanez let loose a long ball,that was headed into the net by Wildcat defender Justus Henry. Two and a half minutes later, it was 3-0 in favor of Nyack, when Felix Horn flicked a ball to Marco Likos, who then fired a shot from six yards out that beat Wilmington keeper Spryos Stergiotis. Nyack added one more goal during the 70th minute, when Martin Narvarez connected on a through pass from Penny, giving the visitors a 4-0 lead that would hold until the final whistle sounded.
Wilmington’s Stergiotis recorded three saves and gave up three goals in his 52 minutes of action, before giving way to senior Russell Dobos, who let up one goal while not recording a save. Ibanez turned away three shots for Nyack in the victory. The Wildcats held a 14-12 edge in shots, while corner kicks were tied at six apiece.
Following the game, Wilmington’s season ends with an 8-7-4 record overall. Nyack (11-5-2) advances to take on #6 Felician College, who were 2-1 upset winners over #3 Dominican College.
