McCool and Shipe Join Trainer's Staff at Wilmington

Thursday, November 17, 2011 - New Castle, DE

Wilmington University Head Women’s Lacrosse Coach Jackie Trainer has announced the additions of Katie McCool and Steve Shipe to her staff for the upcoming season.

Katie McCool, a native of West Chester, Pennsylvania, was a standout lacrosse and field hockey player at West Chester Henderson High School.  She graduated from the University of Delaware in 2008, where she was a four-year member of the Blue Hens’ Women’s Lacrosse team.  While at Delaware, the Blue Hens were ranked in the IWLCA Top 20 twice (2005, 2007) and, as a midfield and attack player, McCool helped lead the Blue Hens to the CAA conference semifinals in 2005, 2007 and 2008.

After graduating from Delaware, she went on to become a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) through the National Strength and Conditioning Association and earned a master’s degree in Exercise and Sport Physiology from West Chester University.  During her time at West Chester, McCool served three seasons as varsity girl’s assistant lacrosse coach at Sanford School in Hockessin, as well as coaching a variety of lacrosse camps, clinics, and individual lessons for Lacrosse Evolution.  She also spent one year as Assistant Speed, Strength and Conditioning Coach at Coastal Carolina University in Conway, South Carolina.

Steve Shipe is back on the staff after spending last season as a volunteer assistant coach.  This year, he will continue to work primarily with the goalkeepers.  Shipe played at Hodgson Vo-Tech high school, where he was a captain and earned All-Blue Hen Conference honors three straight seasons.  His senior year he was named All-State.  Shipe holds state records for saves in a season, saves in a game (52), and career saves.  After high school, he went on to play club lacrosse at the University of Delaware.  Shipe spent five seasons as the head men’s lacrosse coach at Hodgson, where he produced over 30 all-conference players.  Presently, he is also the owner and operator of Flow Lacrosse, a local business which organizes lacrosse leagues for both children and adults.

“I am thrilled with the addition of Katie and Steve to the women’s lacrosse coaching staff”, said Coach Trainer.  “It is excited to build a coaching staff with the experience, credibility, and talent to help take our program to the next level.  I look forward to working with all of them as we try to make Wilmington University a force, not only in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC), but in the region as well.”
