Wildcats Make it Three in a Row With 70-58 Victory Over NYIT

Wilmington University won its third straight game, as they downed the visiting Bears of the New York Institute of Technology, 70-58 in non-conference men’s basketball action at the Pratt Center.
It was all NYIT (1-6) to start the game, as the visitors opened the first five minutes on a 12-3 run. Wilmington (3-1) answered right back with a 21-5 spurt of their own that spanned six minutes, and put the ‘Cats ahead 27-20 with just under nine minutes remaining in the first half. The Wildcats then closed out the period’s final five minutes on an 8-0 run, and headed into the break leading 41-27.
Wilmington maintained a double-digit advantage for most of the second half, and extended their lead to as many as 17 (53-36) with 13:25 to go. The Bears got as close as nine on two different occasions, but the ‘Cats were able to stay on top and pull away with their third consecutive victory.
The Wildcats were led by senior Corye Payton, who posted a game-high 16 points. Classmate Matt King added 12 points and eight rebounds, while junior Brandon Fox chipped in 13 points. Sophomore Herb Dennis had nine points and eight assists for the hosts.
NYIT was led by Jahari McKnight’s 12 points. Azel Prather, Jr. added 11 points and six rebounds, while David Naves had 10.
The Bears shot 46.5 percent from the floor for the game, while Wilmington connected at a 45 percent clip. The ‘Cats made their mark from behind the arc, draining 8-of-19 opportunities, while NYIT hit just 4-of-11. Both teams had 33 rebounds each, but Wilmington forced 21 Bear turnovers, while committing just 13 of their own.
The Wildcats are back in action on Wednesday evening, when they host the St. Thomas Aquinas College Spartans in a non-conference contest beginning at 8:00 PM.
