Plan a two-week trip south with the Wilmington University softball team as the Wildcats will play nearly half its 2012 schedule during its Spring Break trip to Clermont, Fla., in late February and early March.

Sixth-year head coach Erin Harvey will take her team to Florida on beginning on February 24, and will play 24 games, including 18 different schools, before returning to Delaware on March 11.

“I’m excited about the upcoming season,” Harvey said. “We know we have a challenging non-conference portion of the schedule down in Florida, but that will only better prepare us for a tough Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference schedule when we return.”

During the stay, the Wildcats will play Messiah, winners of the 2009 NCAA Division III Championship, NAIA’s University of Michigan-Dearborn and 16 NCAA Division II programs.

Among the competition are three teams that were ranked in the final 2011 National Fastpitch Coaches Association coaches’ poll. No. 18 Grand Valley State is the highest ranked opponent the ‘Cats will square off against, but will also compete against No. 20 West Virginia Wesleyan and No. 23 Tampa during the two-week stay.

Upon returning home, Wilmington will jump right into Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference play starting with cross-town rival Goldey-Beacom on March 20. The team’s first home games are slated for Saturday, March 24 as it hosts Felician and again on the 27th when it welcomes Holy Family.

The ‘Cats longest homestand of the season comes in the middle of April when they host Bloomfield, University of the Sciences and Post all in one week at Asbury Field. The homestand is followed by its longest in-conference roadtrip, traveling to Chestnut Hill, Georgian Court and Nyack the following week to close out the regular season.

Harvey continued, “Our goal is to be back in the hunt for our first CACC title and I feel our preseason schedule will allow us to compete for and accomplish our goal.”

The eight team field CACC Tournament is set to begin April 26 with a champion to be crowned on April 28.

All CACC regular season contests are scheduled to be double-headers, while the CACC Tournament is double elimination.
