The Wilmington University baseball team will look to get back to the NCAA East Regional Tournament and improve upon its postseason showing, as the Wildcats announced their 46 game 2012 schedule.

The Wildcats, who last season finished 37-12 while winning its third CACC Tournament Championship in five seasons, will play three pre-season ranked teams and battle its in-state rival Delaware to highlight the 2012 season.

“We have another competitive schedule this year, no doubt,” head coach Brian August said. “We head to Florida and are going to be playing a lot of tough teams in our region. When we come back, it doesn’t get any easier as we run the gamut with a lot of the tough PSAC (Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference) schools.”

Wilmington will open the season at home in a three game series against Merrimack on March 3-4, before heading to Florida over Spring Break seven games in six days. During the week, the Wildcats will face College Baseball Lineup preseason no. 28 UMass Lowell at the Santaluces Sports Complex in Lantana, Fla.

Following the return from Florida, the Wildcats will open CACC play with home doubleheaders against Dominican and the University of the Sciences. They take a brief break from CACC play to travel to College Baseball Lineup pre-season ranked no. 30 West Chester on March 21. Wilmington will also play PSAC foes Mansfield, Shippensburg, Kutztown and pre-season ranked no. 6 Millersville throughout the season.

The Wildcats will enjoy their longest home stretch in the beginning of April, playing five straight at Wilson field from April 3-7. The team starts with Millersville and hosts doubleheaders against Chestnut Hill and Post during the home stand.

Wilmington will play 10 of its final 11 games on the road with two five-game road trips sandwiched around its final home game against West Chester on April 18. The Wildcats will play its final five games away from home, including games at Millersville, Caldwell (DH), Delaware and Philadelphia.

The NCAA Division II Wildcats will battle interstate rival Division I Delaware on May 1 at Bob Hannah Stadium. Last season, Wilmington beat the Blue Hens both times, 3-1 and 4-0, in Newark.

“The CACC is getting better every year,” August continued. “It’s up in the air again this year. Our goal is to win the CACC every season, get to Regionals and eventually make it to the World Series one of these times. I continue to put a tough schedule together for our kids to be ready for the playoffs and Regionals.”

The CACC Tournament is scheduled to being on May 8 while the champion will earn the automatic berth into the NCAA East Regional Tournament starting on May 17.
