After placing second in a field of 77 at the 62nd Southern California Intercollegiate Championships on Tuesday, junior Wilmington University men’s golfer John Perrine landed the first Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Golfer of the Week, announced by the conference office on Wednesday.

Perrine (Sicklerville, N.J./Gloucester Catholic) shot rounds of 71-78-73 to finish with a 222, four strokes off the overall leader. His opening round of 71 put him in a tie for first place after the first round. Perrine rebounded on Tuesday with the second best round of the afternoon to rebound from a 78 second round on Monday. Only Alex Marry of Sonoma State had a lower three round combination, beating the field with a 218.

The junior managed the course beautifully on the opening nine holes of the tournament, coming into the turn as the outright leader. He shot a 34 on the front nine on Monday before finishing with a 71 with four other players.

Perrine was second on all the par four holes, averaging a 4.12 score in three rounds, finishing four over par for the tournament.

He helped the team to finish in a tie for fourth place in the 14-team tournament with Sonoma State. California State University Stanislaus was the team winner, finishing with a 900 score on the par-71, 7143 yard Mission Viejo Country Club course.

Perrine is the fifth straight Wilmington student-athlete to earn the CACC Golfer of the Week award, dating back to last season. It is the second weekly honor that Perrine has been awarded, also being named the CACC Golfer of the Week on March 14, 2011.

Dominican’s Anthony Schifano was named the CACC Rookie of the Week after posting a final score of 79 to tie for seventh place at the Dowling Southern Swing Invitational in Loris, S.C. Dominican shot 573 for the event, good for 53 strokes below par and a fifth-place tie as a team.

The Wildcats are off until March 26 when they head to the University of North Alabama Spring Classic for another two-day tournament. They will play at the Robert Trent Jones Fighting Joe Golf Course at the Shore in Muscle Shoals, Alabama. The ‘Cats finished ninth out of 18 teams on the same course last spring.
