Wilmington University women’s soccer coach Josh Ruggiero announced and introduced two additions to the team that will join their teammates and the Wildcats in the fall of 2012, starting the 2012 recruiting class.
Katie Baker and Cassie Worthy, both transfers and coming to Wilmington starting in the fall, signed to play for Ruggiero in front of a number of current team members, family and friends at the Audrey K. Doberstein Admissions Center (DAC) building on the New Castle campus.
Baker, a Dover, Del. product, will join the Wildcats after redshirting one season at West Chester University. While on the squad at WCU in 2010, the Rams went 18-1-4 overall, winning the PSAC Conference Tournament and reaching the quarterfinals of the NCAA Tournament.
The defenseman was a four-year letterwinner and starter on varsity for head coach Darrell Gravatt at Caesar Rodney High School, helping the team win its conference all four-years. Baker helped lead the Riders to the DIAA State Finals as a freshman and as a senior semifinals as a sophomore and to the quarterfinal round as a junior. As a senior captain, she helped her team to an undefeated regular season before bowing out to Tower Hill in the DIAA State Championship game, 1-0.
She was named Second Team All-Conference as a freshman and again as a sophomore before earning First Team all-Conference as a junior and a senior. Baker was also named Second Team All-State as a senior.
Baker will major in elementary education at Wilmington University.
Worthy comes to Wilmington after a very successful two-year stint at Burlington County College. While at Burlington County, she helped lead the Barons to back-to-back Region XIX Division I championships, reaching the District Championships each year. She was awarded the Player of the Game award for her performance in the Region XIX title game as a freshman. This past fall, Worthy led Burlington County to a 12-2-2 overall record, falling to Monroe CC on penalty kicks in the District G final. She scored 12 goals and added eight assists, earning a spot on the All-Region XIX Second Team for the second year in a row.
Worthy, a Waretown, N.J. native, was a three year letterwinner at Southern Regional High School as a defender. She helped lead her team to the NJSIAA State Tournament all three years. She was named to the First Team All-Conference and All-County as a senior captain in 2009 and a Second Team All-Conference selection as a junior.
Worthy will major in criminal justice at Wilmington University.
Baker and Worthy will look to help the Wildcats improve upon their 5-12-1 overall record and 11th place finish in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference this past fall.
