Continuing to play some of the best competition across all of NCAA Division II, the Wilmington University golf team continues to impress as the Wildcats swept the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference weekly honors this week, as PJ Tighe was named Golfer of the Week while Scott Davidson was named Rookie of the Week.
In two spring tournaments, the Wildcats have squared off against nine ranked opponents according to the latest Golf Coaches Association of America Golf World/Nike Golf Division Coaches’ Poll, released March 22. Of the nine teams ranked in the latest top 25, the Wildcats have finished ahead of four of those schools, including four more teams that received votes in the poll. Wilmington received 23 votes and is currently the sixth team outside of the top 25.
This past week, the Wildcats finished second at the North Alabama Spring Classic, falling only to the sixth ranked host school. North Alabama also received one first place vote in the poll, and is fifth overall on Golfstat.com for comparative wins.
Tighe (Logan, N.J./Gloucester Catholic) shined for the Wildcats as he shot a 75-71-72 in the three-round tournament to finish in a tie for fourth overall with a 218. Davidson (Round Hill, Va./Loudon Valley) shot a 78-70-77 to finish in a tie for 27th overall, totaling a 225 two-day score. His 70 on the second round was the low score of the tournament for the Wildcats.
Individually, Davidson finished fourth overall on par three holes, going into the books with a +1 score at the end of the tournament. He finished with a 3.08 average on all the par-3 holes. Baldo picked up the third most pars (38) for the tournament. Tighe led the Wildcats by finishing +1 on par-4’s, and -3 on par-5’s. He amassed 10 birdies throughout the three rounds.
Tighe averages a team low 74.06 score for a round, coming in with a 2.41 tally versus par. He has a team low of 68 on the season while playing in 17 rounds including the fall. Davidson averages a 76.24 score and a 4.59 versus par mark. His low round of the year was a 69, also set in the fall.
This is the third time Tighe has earned the CACC Player of the Week award for his career, also being named the league’s best on May 9, 2011 and March 22, 2010. This is the first weekly award for Davidson and the first Wildcat to earn Rookie of the Week since Andrew Baldo was named on May 9, 2011.
The Wildcats return to action this Monday at the Buccaneer Invitational hosted by the current No. 1 ranked team in the GCAA Coaches’ Poll. Wilmington will head to Miami Beach, Fla. and compete at the Normandy Shores Golf Course, hosted by Barry University.
