Starting on the tougher back nine, the Wilmington University men’s golf team got off to a rough start in the first round of the NCAA Division II Men’s Golf Championship but battled back on the front nine to finish with a +12 team score at the Cardinal Club Golf Course hosted by Bellarmine University on Tuesday morning.

Junior John Perrine got the national tournament started on the 10th tee with a 7:30 a.m. tee time as he finished with a par to put the Wildcats on the scorecard. The Wildcats put negative numbers on the board on the 15th hole of the course (sixth of the day) when Perrine and sophomore Jerry Temple birdied the par four on back-to-back groups.

The par-5 17th was also kind to the Wildcats, as they shot five-under par on the hole as a team. Perrine started the hole with a birdie, while Temple also shot a four on the hole. Sophomore Andrew Baldo came on and hit an eagle, two-under score before senior Dan Ott rounded out the red numbers with another birdie. Junior PJ Tighe shot a par to square even on the hole.

Tighe shot an individual low for the Wildcats, as he shot a two-under front nine to finish with a one-under 71 for the day. His only mishap was a bogey on the 14th hole, shooting a five on the par-four hole.

Temple came in as the second best score for the Wildcats, shooting a +2 back nine before making the turn and shooting an even 36. After closing the sixth hole with a birdie to bring his day to an even score, Temple bogeyed the seventh and eighth and closed with a par to finish the day with a +2, 74.

Perrine tallied four birdies on the day to mark with a +5 – 77 on the day, the third best score for the Wildcats. Ott was the final scorer for Wilmington after he recovered from a three-over seven on the opening 10th hole to finish with a +6 – 78. He shot an even par front nine, closing with a birdie on the fifth and ninth holes to close out the day.

Central Oklahoma leads after the first day, coming in with a 279 team score, good enough for a -9. Central Oklahoma’s top player Josh Creel paces the individual leaderboard as well, shooting a 33 back nine before scoring a 32 on the front nine for a -7 – 65 after day one.

The Wildcats have the late tee off time on Wednesday, as the first of five golfers will start Wednesday on the front nine at 12:00 p.m.
