Wilmington Unveils Challenging 2012 Volleyball Schedule with Six NCAA Tournament Participants

A tough preseason schedule featuring five 2011 NCAA Division II Women’s Volleyball Tournament participants will help test the 2012 Wilmington University women’s volleyball team as the Wildcats begin their 2012 campaign on August 31, announced Monday by head coach Kim Huggins-Habbert.

In all, the Wildcats will square off against six 2011 NCAA Tournament participating teams, including reigning Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Tournament champions Caldwell, making it three conference tournament champions, including California (Pa.) who made it to the NCAA Tournament quarterfinals.

Entering her ninth season at the helm of the Wildcats, Huggins-Habbert will look to lead the team back to the CACC Tournament and improve upon its 2012 CACC Tournament Semifinal appearance. The team finished the regular season with a 14-5 record in the CACC, earning the third seed in the South Division. After defeating Dominican, 2-1, in the quarterfinals, the Wildcats’ season came to a close at the hands of Holy Family, finishing with a 20-10 overall record.

The 2012 edition of the Wildcats will begin with a challenging preseason tournament at Millersville University. The season will start on August 30 against Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association Tournament champion and NCAA Tournament participant St. Augustine’s before taking on East Coast Conference Tournament champion and NCAA Second Round participant Dowling in the night cap.

Following the Marauder Clash, the Wildcats will return home to open their brand new facility on Wednesday, September 5 in their CACC opener against Holy Family starting at 7 p.m.

That match will kick-start a six-game home stand for the Wildcats, as they then host their own Wildcat Invitational in which they will pay four matches in two days. Highlighting their Wildcats Invitational schedule is Pace University which also reached the NCAA Tournament. Wilmington will also face St. Rose, Bentley and Davis & Elkins in the two-day tournament. The home stand concludes with a match against Chestnut Hill on Tuesday, Sept. 11.

The Wildcats will head to Waltham, Mass. to compete in the Bentley Invitational the following weekend. While at Bentley, the Wildcats will face PSAC Tournament champion and NCAA Quarterfinalist California (Pa.), Queens (N.Y.) and NCAA Tournament participant Stonehill.

The rest of the season will consists of one final nonconference matchup against Shepherd and 17 CACC matches to fight for a spot in the CACC Tournament. The Wildcats will square off against Nyack, Philadelphia, Concordia, Goldey-Beacom, Georgian Court, CACC Tournament champion and NCAA participant Caldwell, University of the Sciences, and Post at home this year.

Wilmington will take to the road in the CACC against Georgian Court, University of the Sciences, Bloomfield, Holy Family, Felician, Philadelphia, Chestnut Hill, Goldey-Beacom and Dominican.

Four teams from each division will move onto the CACC Tournament starting on Wednesday, Nov. 7. The winners of the quarterfinal matches will move on to play at Georgian Court in the CACC Semifinals on Friday, November 9 and the Championship on Saturday, November 10. The winner of the CACC Tournament will earn the CACC’s automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament.
