The Wilmington University women’s soccer team has been picked to finish seventh in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference according to a vote by the league’s head coaches in the CACC 2012 Women’s Soccer Preseason Poll, announced by the conference office on Thursday.

The Wildcats, coming off a 5-12-1 overall record, will look to get back to the CACC Tournament much like during the 2010 season when the Wildcats went a perfect 12-0 in the conference. They finished 11th in 2011 with a 3-8-1 CACC record.

Wilmington received 84 points, finishing in the middle of the CACC Preseason Poll. Last season’s regular season champions, Philadelphia, overwhelmingly claimed the top spot in this year’s preseason poll, garnering 163 points and 10 first place votes. The Rams finished 21 point above the competition in the 13 team conference.

The 2011 CACC Tournament Champions, Holy Family, gained one first place vote and finished in second place with 142 points after stunning Philadelphia in the CACC Tournament championship, 1-0, to claim the conference’s automatic berth into the NCAA Division II East Region Tournament. Georgian Court received the third most points, 134, along with one first place vote rounding out the top three.

The field drops off after the top three slots, as Felician earned 116 points for fourth place, followed by Caldwell with 113 in fifth. Chestnut Hill gained the final first place vote and 111 points overall for sixth.

Wilmington is followed by Nyack (81 points), Dominican (75), Post (64), Goldey-Beacom (52), Bloomfield (30), and Concordia (18).

The Wildcats open their season on the road on August 30 at Millersville under the lights at 6 p.m., but return home to cut the ribbon on the brand new Wilmington University Athletic Complex. They will square off against Le Moyne on Saturday, Sept. 1 at 12 p.m. for the turf’s first official game.
