With three first place votes and 83 total points, the Wilmington University volleyball team was voted to finish second in the South Division according to a vote by the head coaches in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference 2012 Volleyball Preseason Poll, announced by the conference office on Friday.

The Wildcats, coming off a CACC Tournament Semifinal appearance, will look to improve upon an already impressive 20-10 overall record in 2011. The team earned the South Division’s third seed last year with a 14-5 CACC record and defeated Dominican, 3-1, in the quarterfinals.

Wilmington received three first place votes and totaled 81 votes to finish 13 points behind last season’s South Division winner and CACC Tournament runner-up, Holy Family. The Tigers received 11 first place votes and leads the South Division with 94 points. Philadelphia rounds out the top three in the South Division with 71 points.

The South Division drops off after the top three, as Chestnut Hill finished fourth with 51 points. Goldey-Beacom (35 points), Georgian Court (34) and the University of the Sciences (20) complete the seven teams in the South Division.

Defending CACC Tournament champion Caldwell leads the North Division with 11 first place votes and 95 points overall. Caldwell also earned last year’s North Division number one seed for the Tournament, defeating Holy Family for the CACC’s automatic berth into the NCAA Division II East Region Tournament.

Dominican was the only other team to receive first place votes, as they finished in second with 86 points and three votes for the top spot. Following the Chargers is Nyack (59) and Post (55) for the top four spots. Concordia and Bloomfield tied for fifth with 40 points each while Felician rounds out the North Division with 17 points.

Wilmington begins its season on the road on August 31 at the Marauder Clash hosted by Millersville University. The Wildcats will open the season against the Marauders and East Stroudsburg on Friday, before squaring off against Quincy and Concord on Saturday.

The team will open the new Wilmington University Athletic Complex with its first home game on September 5 when the Wildcats take on Holy Family starting at 7 p.m.
