Wildcats Slow Start Dooms Wilmington Women’s Basketball against Millersville, 94-56

A slow start doomed the Wilmington University women’s basketball team as the Wildcats dropped a 94-56 decision at Millersville on Saturday afternoon at Pucillo Gymnasium.

Wilmington fell to 0-3 on the year as Tenicia Spence led the Wildcats with 21 points as Millersville (1-0) opened its season with a victory.

The Wildcats shot 71.9 percent from the free throw line for the game, shooting 23-for-32, but it wasn’t enough as the Marauders opened a 20-1 lead to start the game and continued to keep the Wildcats at bay.

Spence hit a foul shot at the 17:35 mark of the first half, putting Wilmington on the board but it only slowed the Marauders to a 7-1 start, as the home team opened a 20-1 lead in the first 7:15 of the game.

Spence led the Wildcats with 21 points, scoring 15 times from the charity stripe, going 15-for-17 from the line while shooting 3-for-20 for the contest. Danielle Thomas also poured in 17 points off the bench, shooting 6-for-19 from the floor while adding 4-for-7 from the foul line.

Tashea Plummer grabbed 11 boards for the Wildcats, but Wilmington shot 16-for-71 for the game, shooting 22.5 percent from the floor, falling to a Millersville team that opened its season on Saturday afternoon.

Aurielle Mosley led Millersville with 20 points and 10 boards, shooting 7-for-22 from the floor including 1-for-3 from three and 5-for-8 from the foul line. Mashira Newman added 18 points in the contest, shooting 7-for-9 from the floor and 3-for-5 from the foul line. Senada Mehmedovic was the final Marauder in double digits, scoring 15 points on 5-for-9 shooting.

Millersville shot 38.3 percent from the floor for the game, adding 8-for-19 from three-point territory and 24-for-36 from the foul line.

The Wildcats continue their season opening road trip on Tuesday, beginning their Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference schedule against Holy Family at 7 p.m. The game is slated for a 6 p.m. start in Philadelphia.
