After recording a program single season record 18 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference regular season victories and earned the fourth seed in the conference tournament, the Wilmington University softball team picked up one first place vote and was picked to finish third overall in the 2013 preseason coaches’ poll.

The Wildcats earned 158 total points to sit in third place, as voted on by the league’s 14 head softball coaches. Wilmington is looking up at Dominican (190 points and 10 first place votes) and Caldwell (184 points, and three first place votes). Dominican captured its third straight CACC Tournament Championship last season while both the Chargers and Caldwell advanced to the NCAA East Regional Tournament a year ago.

Georgian Court finished with 147 points to finish directly behind the Wildcats, followed by Bloomfield (133 points), Post (128), Felician (113), and Holy Family (107) to round out the top eight positions. The CACC Tournament takes the top eight regular season finishers in a double-elimination tournament hosted by Georgian Court.

The Wildcats return all three of their All-CACC members from a season ago, led by senior ace and former CACC Pitcher of the Year Katie Warrington. She again was named a First Team All-CACC member in 2012, along with classmate and centerfielder Shelby Thompson. Senior Jillian Stafford picked up All-CACC Honorable Mention honors in 2012, returning for her second season as a Wildcat.

First year head coach Lauren Rizzo takes over a team that finished 26-25 overall a season ago, but captured a program record 18 CACC victories, going 18-8 in league play. Rizzo, an assistant coach on last year’s squad, returns all four players who stepped foot in the circle a year ago, as well as her top four hitters. Rizzo welcomes back a total of nine letterwinners from a season ago.

The Wildcats will look to get back to the CACC Tournament and improve upon their 0-2 record from last year starting on March 16. Wilmington does not have an easy road to start, as the Wildcats square off against Caldwell and Dominican to open the CACC slate. Caldwell comes to town on March 16 for a doubleheader, followed by Dominican on March 22 for a doubleheader.
