Stafford, Warrington, Ash Help Wilmington Softball Sweep CACC Weekly Awards

The Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference released its first 2013 weekly spring report and the Wilmington University softball team swept all three awards for its play during the first week of the season in Clermont, Fla.

Senior Jillian Stafford was named the CACC Player of the Week while classmate Katie Warrington earned the CACC Pitcher of the Week award. Freshman Brook Ash rounded out the three honors by being named the CACC Rookie of the Week award.

The Wildcats are currently 8-5 on its two-week trip to Florida following Tuesday’s play while being led by the three individuals named on the conference’s first report of the year.

Stafford (Gloucester City, N.J./Gloucester) led the team with 15 hits, five doubles, 12 RBI’s and 20 total bases last week, slugging .588 while hitting .441 in 10 games. Her best outing came against Florida Southern on Wednesday as she went 4-for-4 against Florida Southern, collecting three doubles and five RBI’s in the game two win. Stafford also went 4-for-4 with two doubles in a game two win against Davenport. The senior also pitched in four games, going 2-0 inside the circle in 19.2 innings of work.

Warrington (Townsend, Del./Red Lion Christian Academy) dominated from inside the circle for the Wildcats, going 5-0 for the week, pitching in all but one inning in her appearances. She struck out an outstanding 68 batters in 33 innings, throwing three shutouts on the week. She allowed four runs (two earned) on the week, coming to a 0.42 earned run average. She recorded 17 strikeouts in a shutout victory over CACC foe Felician in a nonconference matchup, tallying the second most strikeouts in a game in program history. She struck out at least 10 batters in all five of her starts.

Ash (Millsboro, Del./Indian River) started all 10 games last week and batted .343 with 16 hits. The freshman is also tied for the team lead with seven runs while knocking in eight as well. Ash started her collegiate career on a five game hitting streak and is currently riding a three game streak.

Dominican’s Delaney Childers and Chestnut Hill’s Mandi Rush round out the CACC Weekly Report with being named on the Honorable Mention list for their play during the first week of the season.

The Wildcats return to action on Wednesday when they play Saint Rose and Southern New Hampshire at the National Training Center as part of their Spring Break trip.
