In throwing Wilmington University’s first baseball no-hitter, sophomore Frank Samluk has been selected as the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Pitcher of the Week for the week ending March 10, announced the conference office Monday.
Samluk (Middle, Del./St. Elizabeth’s) threw in two games while Wilmington was down in Florida during its annual Spring Break trip, not allowing an earned run in nine innings for the week while only giving up two hits. He struck out six batters for the week, including five against Molloy in part of his no-hitter.
In a relief role on a scheduled staff day, Samluk began his week with a pair of inning against Nova Southeastern on March 6. He tossed two scoreless innings, giving up two hits while striking out one batter and not allowing a walk.
His week became substantially better on Saturday, capping the Wildcats’ week with the program’s first no-hitter since becoming NCAA eligible prior to the 2005 season. Although he gave up two unearned runs in the game, the sophomore improved to 2-0 on the year as the offense bounced back and won the game with a walk-off single in the bottom of the seventh. Samluk struck out five batters in the game, needing only 83 pitches to get through the no-hitter. He induced 11 ground ball outs, including one double play, and had four players fly out to secure the win.
Samluk, who also moves around the infield as an everyday field player, was no slouch at the plate during the Florida trip as well. He led the team with a .407 batting average, going 11-for-27 in seven games played in the field. He was second on the team in hits and knocked in four runners and scored four runs as well. He batted 4-for-5 in game one against Molloy and also collected multiple hits against UMass-Lowell and Barry.
Junior Josh Hampton was also mentioned on the Weekly Report, earning the Weekly Honor Roll after being named the CACC Player of the Week last week. The third baseman led the offense with 13 hits for the week, seven of which went for doubles. He collected a hit in each of the team’s nine games, extending his hitting streak to 14 straight games overall. Hampton hit .394 for the week, slugging at a .606 clip while reaching base 47.4 percent of his plate appearances.
University of the Sciences Kyle Davis was named the CACC Player of the Week while teammate James Ianni earned the CACC Rookie of the Week award. Felician’s Jordan Tackett and Bloomfield’s Paul Chong round out the Weekly Report by joining Hampton on the Weekly Honor Roll.
