Wilmington Opens 2013 Spring Slate with Opening Round at SoCal Intercollegiate Championship

Freshman Andreas Lunding led the Wilmington University golf team in its 2013 spring debut in the first round at the 63rd SoCal Intercollegiate Championship at the Mission Viejo Country Club, hosted by University of California San Diego on Monday afternoon.
Lunding, the team’s number two golfer on the card for the tournament for the Wildcats, shot an opening round 77, coming in at six over par for the day. He is tied for 33rd overall in the 88 man field. The freshman from Horsholm, Denmark, was second on the course in Par 5 scoring, averaging 4.33 shots per Par 5 hole, coming in at two under par for the day. He was also one of four players to shoot an eagle on the afternoon.
Senior Nick Mafale was the only other scoring Wildcat to finish under 80, shooting a 78 in the first round to finish in a tie in 38th. Mafale was tied for 13th on Par 3 scoring holes, coming in at even par on the day, shooting an average 3.00 on the four Par 3 holes on the course.
Junior Andrew Baldo tied for 61st on the day, shooting an 81, but was one of six golfers on the course to tally five birdies on the day, leading the pack. He started in the third position on the car for the Wildcats. Senior PJ Tighe shot an 83 on day one, placing 71st overall while Tomasz Pulsakowski shot an 86, coming in 77th to round out the top five scorers for the Wildcats.
Overall, the tournament takes the top four scores out of the five on the car for the team, with the Wildcats finishing with a 319 for the first round. On the 71 par, 6,814 yard course built in 2008, the Wildcats finished 35 over par as a team, placing 13th after the first of three rounds.
Playing as individuals and not counting towards the team score, junior Jerry Temple shot a 78 on the day. Temple finished tied for fourth in the tournament with 12 pars in round one, which puts him tied for 38th overall on the leaderboard. Sophomore Matt DiEleuterio rounded out the Wildcat scoring on the day, also playing as an individual and finishing tied for 73rd with an 84. DiEleuterio finished one under par on the three Par 5 holes, placing tied for ninth overall on the day.
CSU-Stanislaus leads the 16 team tournament after the first round, coming into the clubhouse with an eight over 292 on the day. Grand Canyon was second with a 296, 12 over par while CSU-Monterey Bay shot a 298, 14 over par to round out the top three. Southwest Baptist’s Ryan Eady led the field off 88 with a 67, four under round while Belmont Abbey College’s Jon Frisby placed second with a 68, three under round. CSU-Stanislaus’ Rob Damschen rounds out the top three with a 69 while Grand Canyon’s finished with a 70 to cap the players finishing under par on the day.
Wilmington and the rest of the field will play rounds two and three on Tuesday to round out the 63rd Annual SoCal Intercollegiate Championship, with opening tee times starting as early as 7:00 a.m. pacific daylight time.
