Lunding Shoots -2 On Opening Day of WU Spring Invitational to Lead A Wildcat Team Ahead by 19 Strokes

The Wilmington University golf team came out and took a commanding 19 stroke lead after the first round of its own WU Spring Invitational, shooting a 286 to finish at two over par as a team on a cold, windy day at Back Creek Golf Club.

Freshman Andreas Lunding once again led the field after the first round, shooting the only round under par out of the field of 50 student-athletes, finishing with a 69, two under par for the day. Seniors PJ Tighe and Nick Mafale finished second, finishing as two of the three golfers to shoot an even par 71 for the day.

Junior Andrew Baldo finished in a tie for sixth place, shooting a four over 75 while classmate Jerry Temple rounded out the scoring five for the Wildcats with an eight over 79. The tournament takes the top four scorers of the round for the team score.

Mafale led all 50 golfers with a three under round on the Par 3 holes, while also tying for the tournament lead with five birdies on the day. Tighe finished with an even score round on all Par 3 and Par 4 holes while finishing for the tournament lead with 12 pars in the first round.

Adelphi, ranked first in the East Region, sit in second after the first round of play, shooting a 305, 21 over par. Nyack placed third with a 309, 25 over par round while Dowling College shot a 313, 29 over par to come in fourth. Goldey-Beacom rounds out the top five with a 318, 34 over par in the first round.

Playing as individuals in the tournament, Senior John Perrine finished the first day with a 79, eight over par, sitting in a tie in 14th on the leaderboard. Sophomore Matt D’Eleuterio shot an 82 to finish in a tie for 26th while Tomasz Pulsakowski rounded out the Wildcat lineup with an 84, tying for 36th.

The second and final round of the WU Spring Invitational will resume on Friday morning, with the leaders teeing off as early as 8:05 a.m.
