For the second tournament in a row, the Wilmington University golf team finished atop the leaderboard, both as a team and with an individual, as the Wildcats and Andreas Lunding took top honors at the WU Spring Invite after the final round at Back Creek Golf Course on Friday afternoon.

Although the Wildcats finished with the second best round on Friday, the hosts were still able to come away with the tournament championship, shooting a 286-303 for a 589 and a 25 stroke victory. The Wildcats finished 21 over par in the two round tournament, followed by Dowling College (313-301 – 614, +46), Nyack College (309-307 – 616, +48), and Adelphi (305-312 – 617, +49).

The freshman Lunding followed his tournament low 69 opening round score with a 74 on Friday, finishing with a one over par, 143 two round score for his second straight medalist honors. Nyack’s Camden Lawrence finished second, finishing with a 75 on day two to score a 146, four over par on the tournament. Wildcat senior Nick Mafale trailed Lawrence by one stroke on the final leaderboard, shooting a 71-76 for a two round score of 147, five over par and a third place finish.

Junior Andrew Baldo placed fifth overall for the host team, shooting a 74 on Friday to beat his first round score of 75 on Thursday to finish with a 149 and seven over par. Teammate PJ Tighe finished directly behind Baldo on the leaderboard, shooting a 79 on Friday after shooting a 71 on Thursday to finish with a 150, eight over par for the tournament. Tighe also rounded out the Wilmington top four scores for the tournament, giving the team its 589 in the two rounds.

It is back-to-back medalist honors for Lunding, after taking the Bayside Invitational hosted by Dowling College two weeks ago as well. He was the only player to shoot a below par round, shooting a 69, two under on Thursday for the first round, but came back with a three over par 74 to finish three strokes ahead of the second place finisher.

Senior John Perrine led all individual players with a consistent 79-79 two round score to finish 19th with a 158. Sophomore Matt DiEleuterio came back with a 77 in the second round, finishing in a tie for 20th with a 159 while junior Tomasz Pulsakowski rallied for a second round 76 to place tied for 22nd with a 160.

Lunding and Perrine tied for the lead in the tournament in Par 5 scoring, each coming away with a one under score on the three Par 5 holes during the two-day tournament.  Baldo and Lunding tied for the tournament lead with 25 holes at par, while Tighe shot 24 holes at par. Mafale led all Wildcats on Par 3 scoring for the tournament, shooting two under par overall, averaging 2.75 strokes per Par 3 hole, second in the tournament.

The Wildcats have little time to celebrate their team victory, as they will hop on a plane on Saturday to head to their next tournament in Miami Beac, Fla. Wilmington will take part in the Buccaneer Invitational for the second year in a row, hosted by Barry University on Monday and Tuesday. The two-day tournament will take place at Normandy Shores Golf Club.
