Wilmington University standout student-athletes Andreas Lunding and Ray Gambone have been selected in their respective sports as Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Player of the Week, announced by the conference office on Monday.

In its weekly report, the CACC announced Lunding as the Player and Rookie of the Week for the second time this season, leading his golf team to a 25 stroke lead in the Wildcats’ own WU Spring Invite on Thursday and Friday. Gambone picked up his first CACC Weekly honor of his career, earning Co-Pitcher of the Week in leading his team to a 4-0 victory over Philadelphia on Wednesday.

For the second tournament in a row, the Wilmington golf team finished atop the leaderboard, both as a team and with an individual, as the Wildcats and Lunding took top honors at the WU Spring Invite. Lunding shot an opening round 69 (-2), the only player under par in either round, and came back with a 74 (+3) on the final day to secure the three-shot cushion.

Lunding helped pace the Wildcats to their second straight tournament title, winning the WU Spring Invite by 25 strokes over six other Northeast Regional opponents, including Nassau CC and Wesley College. The Wildcats shot a 286 on the first round on Thursday and held onto their 25 shot lead with a 303 on Friday to wrap up the tournament.

Senior Nick Mafale took third place in the WU Spring Invite, earning a spot on this week’s Weekly Honor Roll. Mafale shot a 71 even par for the first round and backed it up with a 76 (+5) for the second round to shoot 147 over the two day tournament.

On the baseball diamond, Gambone opened the Wildcats’ week with an outstanding performance on the mound on Wednesday, throwing his first complete game shutout of his career. The sophomore led the Wildcats to a 4-0 single game victory over CACC rivals Philadelphia, striking out eight batters while only walking two and giving up five hits.

Gambone now leads all started on Wilmington with a 1.64 earned run average, going 4-1 in eight starts so far. He has thrown 38.1 innings while striking out a team high 36 batters. Opponents are hitting just .207 off the lefty.

The Wildcats finished 3-0 on the week, defeating Philadelphia and then moving on to sweep Post on Friday. The three wins help Wilmington pick up one first place vote in the latest NCBWA East Region Top 10 Poll, continuing to sit behind Southern New Hampshire in second place.

Concordia’s Christian Fiorito was named the CACC Baseball Player of the Week, batting .407 for the Clippers while slugging .741 with two home runs, a double and a triple. Gambone shared the CACC Pitcher of the Week honor with Dominican’s Peter Martinez who also tossed a complete game victory last week, a seven hit victory over Concordia. Concordia’ Mike Barone earned baseball’s CACC Rookie of the Week, rounding out the Weekly Honors.

Golf is currently competing at the Buccaneer Invitational hosted by Barry University in Miami Beach, Fla., while baseball heads to Chestnut Hill next for a conference doubleheader on Tuesday.
