Wilmington University Names Mike Gallagher As Head Men's Basketball Coach

Monday, April 20, 2009 - New Castle, DE

Wilmington University Athletic Director, Frank Aiello, is pleased to announce the hiring of Mike Gallagher as men’s basketball coach. Gallagher replaces Kevin Welch who resigned after four seasons.

A graduate of Drexel University, Gallagher was previously the Men’s Basketball Head Coach and Coordinator of Compliance at Neumann College. In two seasons, he helped guide the Knights to a 21-29 record.

Gallagher also spent seven years as the assistant head men’s basketball coach at the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia. Prior to that, he was the head coach for the men’s program at Bishop Eustace High School, and also assisted the men’s programs at Pope Paul VI, Archbishop Carroll, and St. Joseph’s Prep High Schools.

Wilmington finished 7-20 last season, and was 4-12 in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference games. “There are some talented players returning from last year’s team, and I look forward to the challenge of rebuilding this program into a contender, both on the conference and also the regional level,” Gallagher said.

"We are very happy to have Mike join the coaching staff," Aiello said. "He comes to us with a very impressive background. He knows the CACC very well, as he spent seven seasons working in this league. I feel confident that the men’s basketball program will benefit greatly from his knowledge of the game and improve with his structured style of coaching. Our student-athletes should enjoy the opportunity to work with him."
