Five Wilmington University baseball players earned another postseason honor last week as the 2013 Daktronics Baseball All-East Region Teams were announced, voted on by members of the East Regions universities’ sports information directors.

The Wildcats (43-14) were led by senior starting pitcher David Hatt and sophomore utility player Frank Samluk on the All-Region First Team while sophomore starting pitcher Ray Gambone, junior third baseman Josh Hampton, and senior outfielder Brandon Payne were named to the All-Region Second Team.

Hatt, recently named NCBWA East Region Pitcher of the Year, finished 7-1 on the year while starting 16 games and tossing a team best 91 innings. He allowed 21 earned runs and finished with a 2.08 earned run average, with hitters only batting .212 against him. Hatt struck out 56 batters while only allowing 18 walks on the season.

Samluk was a do-it-all player for the Wildcats, as he played in 45 games while making 40 starts. He mostly started as the team’s second baseman, but also saw time at first base when he wasn’t the team’s number three starter on the mound. The sophomore batted .315 following the NCAA Division II East Region Tournament, knocking in 23 runs while scoring an additional 30 for the Wildcats. He had his best showing of the season in the East Region Tournament on Friday, striking out a career best 12 batters in an elimination contest against New Haven on Friday. Samluk was named the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Tournament MVP and finished 5-1 with a 2.25 earned run average in 64 innings, picking up 49 strikeouts in 14 appearances.

Gambone pitched the strongest down the stretch for the Wildcats, only allowing one run in his final 23 innings with the run coming in the third inning against Bridgeport on April 29. He went eight scoreless against Chestnut Hill in the CACC Tournament before going another eight scoreless against St. Thomas Aquinas in the East Region Tournament. Gambone led the team with 66 strikeouts on the year, going 9-1 in 16 appearances, making 15 starts and tossing 88 innings. He finished his second year as a Wildcat with a 2.05 earned run average, first on the team among starters.

Hampton set a Wilmington record with 24 doubles on the year, also tying the single season mark for hits with 76. He added four triples and five home runs, his last a walk-off in the bottom of the 10th to defeat Southern New Hampshire to reach the East Region Championship game on Sunday. He led the team with 46 RBI while also scoring 40 more. Hampton finished with a .530 slugging percentage and a .328 batting average on the season.

Payne also tied the single season mark for hits, tying Hampton with 76 on the year. Both Hampton and Payne tied the mark set by Cody Holliday in 2009. The senior outfielder batted a team second best .350 on the year, hitting 12 doubles, five triples, and two home runs, finishing second on the team with 104 total bases. He collected 38 RBI while scoring 42 more, slugging at a .479 clip. He also stole 12 bases on the season.

Franklin Pierce’s Trevor Graham was named the 2013 Daktronics East Region Pitcher of the Year finishing the regular season with an 8-2 record in 13 starts. He was sixth in the country with 104 strikeouts prior to the start of the East Region Tournament, carrying a 1.94 ERA. St. Thomas Aquinas’ catcher Mike Russo was named the 2013 Daktronics East Region Player of the Year after leading the Spartans with a .349 average, hitting 11 home runs and 62 runs batted in.

The 2012-13 Daktronics baseball All-America team will be announced on Friday, May 24. The first-team members from each of the country’s eight regions are placed on the national ballot with NCAA Division II Sports Information Directors.

The D2SIDA All-America baseball team is sponsored by Daktronics, Inc., an acknowledged world leader in scoring, timing and programmable display systems for virtually every sport at every level of competition. The teams are voted on by the members of D2SIDA, NCAA Division II Sports Information Directors Association.
