For the third year in a row, the Wilmington University volleyball team earned the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Team Academic Award for the 2012-13 academic season. The team was among 622 programs that earned the distinction this year.
The award, which was initiated in the 1992-93 academic year, honors collegiate and high school volleyball teams that displayed excellence in the classroom during the school year by maintaining at least a 3.30 cumulative team grade-point average on a 4.0 scale.
The AVCA Team Academic Award has become one of the AVCA's fastest growing awards programs, seeing an impressive surge in teams honored over the past several years. Since the 2000-2001 season, the number of recipients has increased every single year but one, while amassing an overall 300% increase over the span of the last decade. Since the award's inception in 1993, the amount of award winners has increased from 62 to its current record number of 622. This year’s award recipients increased from 536 teams in 2011-12.
While NCAA Division I programs produced 130 teams on the list, NCAA Division II improved its mark from 69 a year ago to 77 this season. Wilmington is joined by Caldwell College as the lone representatives from the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference. NCAA Division II produced 93 programs on the list to round out the NCAA institutions.
Wilmington opens its 2013 slate on the road at the Charger Invitational on the campus of New Haven on September 6. The first shot to see the Wildcats in action at the WU Athletics Complex is on September 17 when the team hosts CACC rival Georgian Court at 7 p.m.
