Wildcats Tabbed South Division Favorites in 2013 CACC Volleyball Preseason Poll

Looking to defend its South Division title and take the next step to claiming the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Tournament Championship, the Wilmington University volleyball team was picked to repeat as South Division champions in the 2013 CACC Preseason Poll, voted on by the league’s head coaches Wednesday.
Wilmington received 12 first place votes among the 14 conference head coaches, picking up 96 total points, each of which were the most among any team in either division. Caldwell received nine first place votes and a total of 91 points to pace the North Division.
The Wildcats reached the CACC Tournament Championship match last season held at the WU Athletics Complex, but fell to Dominican with the chance to earn the conference’s automatic bid to the NCAA Division II East Region Tournament. Overall, the Wildcats went 28-6 in 2012, including an 18-1 conference record prior to the playoffs.
Middle hitter Katie Shorter returns for her senior season and will power the South Division favorites after claiming the 2012 CACC Player of the Year honors, and the first All-Region selection in program history during its NCAA era. Shorter led the conference with 1.46 blocks per set, blocks (61), block assists (114) and total blocks (175).
Philadelphia received a first place vote and 80 points overall to claim second place in the South Division in the preseason poll. Georgian Court collected 66 points for third place while USciences rounded out the South Division first place votes with one, and 50 total points for fourth place. Directly behind the Devils with 49 points was Holy Family while Chestnut Hill (32 points) and Goldey-Beacom (19) rounded out the South Division.
Dominican, the 2012 CACC North Division and Tournament Champions, picked up three first place votes in the north side of the preseason poll, earning 77 total points for second place. Nyack wasn’t far behind with earning the final first place vote and 73 points for third place. Post (55 points), Bloomfield (43), Concordia (32), and Felician (21) rounded out the North Division poll.
The top four teams from each division will advance to the 2013 CACC Volleyball Championship, which begins on Tuesday, November 12 with quarterfinal matches at conference sites. The quarterfinal winners will advance to the Final Four hosted by Georgian Court on November 15-16.
The Wildcats will open its season on September 6 at the University of New Haven’s Charger Invitational. September 11 will mark the start of league play when the Wildcats travel to Chestnut Hill College. The first chance to catch the Wildcats in action at the WU Athletics Complex will be on September 17 at 7 p.m. against Georgian Court.
