A direct kick that deflected off the Wilmington women’s soccer defensive wall found its way into the back of the net in the first overtime, giving Georgian Court the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference contest, 1-0, on Investors Savings Bank Field.
Wilmington (0-3, 0-1 CACC), which previously defeated the Lions (1-0, 0-0 CACC) in four straight meetings dating back 2010, had its best offensive showing of the early going in 2013, posting three first half shots and totaling five on the afternoon.
In a game that was delayed an hour and ten minutes for a lightning storm, neither team could end the game in regulation. Wilmington goalkeeper Julia Brown recorded four saves, including one in overtime to keep the Wildcats in the contest, but it was the Lions’ Casey O’Conner who kept the Wildcats off the board while making three saves in the game.
Georgian Court put the pressure on the Wildcats early in the overtime period, making Brown record a save in the 95th minute to keep the game alive. But it was after a foul when the Lions found an answer. Taylor Reinecke took the direct kick which deflected off the Wilmington wall, producing her first goal of the season in Georgian Court’s 2013 opener.
The Wildcats earned three corners in the game, two in the first half, but were out-cornered by the Lions, 7-3, for the contest.
Junior Victoria Vasapolli led the Wildcats with two shots, both of which were on frame. Jenna Quaranta, Monica Weil, and Rebecca Sowers each tallied one shot to round out the shooting for the visitors.
Wilmington will make its 2013 home debut on Saturday when it squares off against Felician in another CACC contest. The match will begin at 12 p.m. at the WU Athletics Complex.
