With the 2014 softball season approaching the Wilmington University program was selected to finish fourth and make another appearance in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Tournament as the 2014 CACC Softball Preseason Poll was announced Monday by CACC Commissioner Dan Mara.

The Wildcats have a first year head coach and only return five student-athletes from last year’s team that went a record 19-7 in the CACC in 2013, but gained 140 points to fourth overall in a vote by the league’s 14 head coaches.

The 2013 CACC Tournament champions from Caldwell earned 12 first place votes and 192 total points to lead the poll, followed by the 2013 CACC Regular Season champions from Dominican with 172 points. The Chargers earned the remaining two first place votes. Georgian Court picked up 159 points to complete the only three teams ahead of the Wildcats in the preseason poll.

Last week, Caldwell was slotted No. 19 in the National Fastpitch Coaches Association Division II Preseason Poll.  The Cougars finished the 2013 campaign with a 45-12 mark and earned their sixth-consecutive invitation to the NCAA East Region Tournament.  The 45 victories tied the school single-season mark.  Caldwell was ranked No. 24 in the final NFCA national survey last season.

The CACC Tournament takes the top eight teams from the regular season, and Holy Family (130 points), USciences (129), Bloomfield (111), and Felician (103) round out the remaining four spots to complete the eight teams who the coaches think will be in the CACC Tournament at the end of the regular season.

The remainder of the poll features: Post (85 points), Philadelphia (74), Goldey-Beacom (56), Concordia (49), Chestnut Hill (45), and Nyack (25).

The CACC Softball Championship is a double elimination championship beginning on Thursday, May 1 and concluding on Saturday, May 3 at Georgian Court University.

The Wildcats’ season begins with a pair of doubleheaders at home this year, prior to making their annual Spring Break trip to Clermont, Fla. The Wildcats will host Pace on March 2 and Bloomsburg on March 4 before heading to Florida. Wilmington’s CACC schedule begins with a home doubleheader against Felician on March 16.
