The Wilmington University baseball team is the unanimous choice to repeat as the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Regular Season Champions after a vote by the leagues’ 11 head coaches was tallied and announced by CACC Commissioner Dan Mara.
The Wildcats have won each of the past three CACC Tournament Championships, earning the conference’s automatic bid into the NCAA Division II East Region Tournament. The Wildcats finished with a program record 43 wins in 2013, advancing to the East Region Tournament Championship game before being eliminated by Franklin Pierce.
The Wildcats received all 11 first place votes, tallying a perfect 121 points. Dominican finished with 100 points for second place, followed by Felician’s 97 points. Concordia (96 points), Philadelphia (71), and Chestnut Hill (67) round out the top six teams picked to continue on to the CACC Tournament in 2014.
The first round of the tournament is single elimination featuring the No. 3 seed against the No. 6 seed and the No. 4 seed against the No. 5 seed on Saturday, May 3 at the site of the higher seed. The tournament then transitions to a double elimination, four-team championship beginning on Thursday, May 8 and concluding on Saturday, May 10 at Wilson Field, the home of Wilmington University.
The remainder of the poll features Post (49 points), Nyack (48), USciences (28), Bloomfield (26), and Caldwell (23).
Last week, the Wildcats were selected No. 19 in the preseason NCBWA National Poll, as well as second in the NCBWA East Region Poll. Dominican checked in at No. 9 in the East Region to start the season. Felician received votes in the East Region poll.
Wilmington opens the 2014 slate in a play weekend in Petersburg, Va., starting February 21. The Wildcats open the season against Mercyhurst that Friday, followed by Mansfield and Saint Rose over the weekend. The CACC schedule begins with a CACC Tournament Championship rematch against Chestnut Hill on March 13 on the road.
