The Wilmington University women’s lacrosse team used 10 different goal scorers to shutout Caldwell, 18-0, in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference at the WU Athletics Complex on Saturday afternoon.
Much like the rain, the Wildcats’ (4-4, 3-1 CACC) offense was consistent throughout the game, making the most of their opportunities and filling the stat sheet.
The scoring began for the Wildcats by Gabby Spalt, who got her 12th goal of the season just two minutes into the first half. Katie Spence and Maddie Hewitt quickly added a goal each just seconds after the opening goal. The Wildcats maintained a strong offense, as Ashley Kroll converted on a free-position shot to take the Wildcats lead to 4-0. This was followed by Hewitt’s second goal of the game at the 19:52 minute mark.
Rebekah McCurry, the Wildcats’ leading goal scorer, tallied her 15th of the season with just 10:06 remaining. Megan Keffer joined the score sheet with back to back goals, while Penelope Fantis rounded out the half with a goal under two minutes left, taking the Wildcats lead to 10-0 at the halftime break.
The second half scoring began with Hewitt, completing her hat trick for the afternoon. Shawna Chopko then added the 12th goal for the Wildcats, and her third of the season, with 25 minutes showing on the scoreboard. Alexis Olsen also got her third of the season with an assist from Keffer, making it 13-0 with 18:39 to play.
Freshman Morgan Tildon recorded her first goal of the season with an unassisted goal with less than 10 minutes left of the second half. McCurry finished the scoring for the Wildcats, completing another hat trick on the day and taking her total to 17 goals for the season. She also earned two assists for a team high of five points.
Ashley Kroll, Katie Spence, and Keffer each recorded two goals on the day, while Spalt led the team with three assists. Keffer finished the day with four points, adding two assists.
The Wildcats’ defense was strong throughout the game, limiting the Cougars’ total shots to four, while Sarah Lindler led the team with five ground balls. Wildcats’ keeper Corinne Dries only had to make three saves throughout the game for the victory.
This was Wilmington’s fourth shutout in program history, and first since blanking Post University in the 2010 season. The Wildcats are back in action on Monday 31st at home against rivals Holy Family, with the opening draw scheduled for 4 p.m.
