The Wildcats of Wilmington University broke out their pink uniforms in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month and their Dig For A Cure campaign, and with it found their winning ways, sweeping a pair of matches on Saturday afternoon at the Pratt Gymnasium.
In the first match of the day, Wilmington downed Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) foe Felician College, 3-0. The ‘Cats took the first set 25-19, won the second by a 25-15 margin, and completed the sweep with a 25-22 win in the third and final set.
The Wildcats were led by senior middle hitter Brittani Leathern, who posted 10 kills and four blocks. Sophomore middle hitter Sheri Hunley added nine kills and three blocks, while junior outside hitter Meghan Frick had 10 kills and nine digs. Sophomore Kim Shropshire had 16 digs, while junior Brittany O’Neill chipped in with a dozen digs. Sophomore setter Shannon Rumple had 33 assists and nine digs.
In the final match of the afternoon, Wilmington held off Mercy College, again winning in straight sets. The Wildcats won the first set 25-19, took the second by a 25-16 margin, and completed the sweep with a 29-27 come-from-behind win in the final set.
Wilmington was led by Leathern, who had nine kills. Hunley added eight kills and seven blocks, while Frick added six kills and 19 digs. O’Neill chipped in with 13 digs, and Rumple posted 35 assists and eight digs.
With the wins, the Wildcats improved to 5-5 in the CACC and 9-11 overall. Wilmington returns to the court on Tuesday evening, when they travel to take on the Rams of Philadelphia University in a CACC contest beginning at 7:00 PM.
