In a battle of two of the East Region’s top teams, the 14th ranked Wildcats of Wilmington University got the best of the visiting 18th ranked Chargers of Dominican College, 2-0 in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) men’s soccer action on Thursday afternoon at the Kirkwood Soccer Complex.

The two teams struggled to find their pace offensively in the first half, and headed into the break knotted at zero. Minutes into the second half, Wilmington got on the board as senior Sargbah Tarpeh knocked home a corner kick from classmate Fatoma Turay. Tarpeh headed the ball off the crossbar, and after the miss, buried his second opportunity to give the ‘Cats the 1-0 lead. Tarpeh struck again at the 78:30 mark, when he converted a penalty kick opportunity and put the Wildcats up 2-0. That would be all the offense the green and white would need, as they held on for the important conference and regional victory.

Wilmington’s Duhan Malali (11-0) notched four saves in goal, while Brandon Heembrock notched five saves in goal for Dominican. Both teams had 15 shots apiece, but the ‘Cats had the edge in corner kicks, 11-6.

With the win, Wilmington improved to 9-0 in the CACC and 16-2 overall, and ran off their 12th straight victory. Dominican fell to 6-2-1 in the conference and 11-2-2 on the season. The Wildcats return to the pitch on Saturday afternoon, when they play host to the Golden Falcons of Felician College in a CACC contest beginning at 2:00 PM.
