VOLLEYBALL OPENS SEASON 1-2 AT DUTCH COUNTY SPIKETACULAR

MILLERSVILLE, PA -- The Wildcats of Wilmington University opened the 2009 season with a 1-2 showing at the Dutch County Spiketacular Tournament hosted by Millersville University.

Wilmington opened the tournament, dropping a very close 3-0 match to the host Marauders of Millersville University, 3-0 (23-25, 21-25, 21-25). The Wildcats bounced back in match two, and swept the Bulldogs of Bowie State University, 3-0 (25-11, 25-16, and 25-13). The ‘Cats fought fatigue in the third and final match of the afternoon, and fell to the Golden Knights of the College of St. Rose, 3-0 (15-25, 20-25, 18-25).

Against Millersville, sophomore Paige Norvell led the way with 10 kills, and hit at .455 clip. Juniors Meghan Frick and Michelle Boyd each added seven kills, while Frick also had nine digs. Sophomore Shannon Rumple posted a double-double with 20 assists and 13 digs, while classmate Kim Shropshire notched 11 digs.

Rumple again led the way against Bowie State, posting 24 assists, five kills, and nine digs. Frick added eight kills, while sophomore Sheri Hunley had seven kills. Shropshire chipped in with four kills, seven kigs, and four aces for the ‘Cats.

In their final match of the afternoon, Frick posted eight kills and 11 digs to lead the Wildcats. Boyd added six kills and two blocks, while Shropshire had three kills, eight digs, and three aces. Rumple added 21 assists for Wilmington.

Following the tournament, Wilmington now stands at 1-2 overall. The Wildcats return to action on Friday afternoon, when they travel to take part in the West Chester University Invitational. The ‘Cats tangle with Seton Hill University at 2:00 PM, then take on Daemen College at 4:00 PM.

VOLLEYBALL DROPS A PAIR OF MATCHES AT WEST CHESTER TOURNAMENT

WEST CHESTER, PA -- The Wildcats of Wilmington University dropped a pair of matches in the opening day of the West Chester University Invitational. Wilmington opened with a 3-1 loss (23-25, 25-17, 19-25, 12-25) to Seton Hill University, and followed with a 3-0 loss (23-25, 17-25, 16-25) to Daemen College.

Against Seton Hall, junior Meghan Frick led the way with 13 kills, 13 digs, and four aces. Sophomore Paige Norvell added six kills and 12 digs, while classmate Kim Shropshire notched 12 digs. Setter Shannon Rumple had 29 assists, and sophomore Sheri Hunley chipped in with seven kills and four blocks for the ‘Cats.

In the loss to Daemen College, junior Brittany O’Neill paced the ‘Cats defense with a match-high 20 digs. Shropshire added six kills and nine digs, while Frick had four kills and 12 digs.

Following the day’s matches, Wilmington now stands at 1-4 overall. The Wildcats return to action on Saturday, when they take part in the final day of the West Chester University Invitational. The ‘Cats tangle with Chestnut Hill College at 10:00 AM, then take on West Chester University at 2:00 PM.

WILDCATS SPLIT ON FINAL DAY OF WEST CHESTER VOLLEYBALL INVITATIONAL

WEST CHESTER, PA -- The Wildcats of Wilmington University split a pair of matches on their final day of action at the West Chester University Invitational. Wilmington swept Chestnut Hill College 3-0 (25-12, 25-15, 25-11) to open the morning, and fell to the host Golden Rams of West Chester 3-1 (25-21, 16-25, 18-25, 19-25) later in the afternoon.

Junior Meghan Frick led the way against Chestnut Hill, as she posted a double-double of 14 kills and 10 digs. Classmate Michelle Boyd added seven kills, three aces, and three blocks, while setter Shannon Rumple had 28 assists and five aces.

In the loss to West Chester, the ‘Cats played some amazing defense. Libero Brittany O’Neill had 27 digs, while Frick had another double-double of 10 kills and 19 digs. Sophomore Paige Norvell added six kills and 17 digs, while classmate Kim Shropshire had six kills and 14 digs. Rumple had 33 assists for the match.

Following the matches, Wilmington now stands at 2-5 overall. The Wildcats return to the court on Tuesday evening, when they host the Rams of Philadelphia University in their home and CACC opener. Game time is slated for 7:00 PM.

PHILADELPHIA DOWNS WILMINGTON, 3-0 IN VOLLEYBALL

NEW CASTLE, DE -- The visiting Rams of Philadelphia University swept the host Wildcats of Wilmington University, 3-0 in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) volleyball action on Tuesday evening at the Pratt Gymnasium. Philadelphia won the first game 25-19, came on late to win the second by a score of 28-26, and completed the sweep with a 25-18 victory in the third game.

Junior outside hitter Meghan Frick led the Wildcat attack with nine kills and 19 digs. Senior Brittani Leathern added nine kills, while junior libero Brittany O’Neill had 14 digs. Sophomore Kim Shropshire posted 12 digs and setter Shannon Rumple chipped in with 26 assists and eight digs.

Philadelphia was paced by Cindy Adams’ eight kills and match-high 22 digs. Celena Rendon added eight kills and 12 digs, while Molloy Mallone chipped in with eight kills and four blocks. Nicole Berkstresser also added eight kills and the setter duo of Adrienne Stigure and Lauren Hoover had 19 and 17 assists, respectively.

Following the match, Wilmington dropped to 0-1 in the CACC and 2-6 overall, while Philadelphia improved to 2-0 in the conference and 11-1 on the season, as they won their 11th straight match. The Wildcats return to action on Saturday afternoon when they travel to the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia to take part in a tri-match against the host Devils and Le Moyne College.

PHILADELPHIA, PA -- The Wildcats of Wilmington University dropped a pair of matches at the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia, in tri-match action on Saturday afternoon at Morgan Arena. Wilmington fell to USP in a CACC contest 3-2 (25-22, 19-25, 23-25, 25-22, 14-16) to open the action, then lost to Le Moyne College 3-0 (25-27, 14-25, 19-25) in a non-conference matcher later in the day.

Against USP, the Wildcats were paced by junior Meghan Frick, who had 12 kills and 20 digs. Sophomore Shannon Rumple had 34 assists and 13 digs in a double-double effort, while junior Michelle Boyd and sophomore Paige Norvell each posted eight kills. The defense of junior Brittany O’Neill and sophomore Kim Shropshire had 23 and 14 digs, respectively.

In the loss to Le Moyne, Wilmington was again led by Frick’s nine kills and eight digs. Rumple added 17 assists and 17 digs, while O’Neill recorded 12 digs.

Following the matches, Wilmington dropped to 0-2 in the CACC and 2-8 overall. The Wildcats return to the court on Tuesday evening, when they travel to take on the Tigers of Holy Family University in a CACC contest beginning at 7:00 PM.

VOLLEYBALL DROPS HEARTBREAKER TO HOLY FAMILY, 3-2

PHILADELPHIA, PA -- The Wildcats of Wilmington University dropped a heartbreaking match to the host Tigers of Holy Family University, 3-2 in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) volleyball action on Tuesday evening at the Campus Center.

Wilmington won the first set 26-24, before dropping the next two 23-25 and 18-25. The ‘Cats rallied to take the fourth set by a 25-22 margin, but fell in the fifth and final set, 15-7.

The Wildcats were led by sophomore Paige Norvell, who posted a team-high eight kills and eight digs. Senior Brittani Leathern added seven kills and five blocks, while junior Michelle Boyd had seven kills. Junior Meghan Frick recorded six kills and a team-high 16 digs, while libero Brittany O’Neill had 16 digs. Setter Shannon Rumple posted 25 assists and nine digs for the ‘Cats.

Three Tigers recorded double-doubles in the victory. Outside hitter Katie Hornback recorded 16 kills and 12 digs, both are season-highs. She also tied her career-high with six service aces. Outside hitter Jill Keeve came through with a career-best 19 digs and 12 kills. Setter Aimee Drabyn recorded 49 assists, 14 digs and five service aces.

Middle hitter Beckie Tett added a career-high 10 kills in the win. Libero Jordan Beland was the defensive leader with 24 digs. As a team, Holy Family recorded 22 service aces, which is second on the school’s all-time list.

Following the match, Wilmington dropped to 0-3 in the CACC and 2-9 on the season, while Holy Family improved to 3-1 in the conference and 5-13 overall. The Wildcats return to the court on Thursday evening when they travel to take on the cross-town rival Lightning of Goldey-Beacom College in a CACC match beginning at 7:00 PM.

WILMINGTON, DE -- The Wildcats of Wilmington University swept the rival Lightning of Goldey-Beacom College, 3-0 in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) volleyball action on Thursday evening at the Jones Center.

Wilmington edged the hosts 25-21 in the first set, took the second by a 25-19 scored, and completed the sweep with a 25-17 victory in the third and final set.

Leading the way for the Wildcats was sophomore Paige Norvell, who posted eight kills, four aces, three blocks, and eight digs. Classmate Sheri Hunley added eight kills and six blocks, while setter Shannon Rumple had 29 assists, three aces, and eight digs.

Goldey-Beacom was led by Roni Shaner’s eight kills and seven digs. Kellyn Nolan added seven kills, while Monica Dempsey had 10 assists and 10 digs. Libero Christine Hudock posted a match-high 20 digs in the defeat.

With the win, Wilmington improved to 1-3 in the CACC and 3-9 overall, while Goldey-Beacom dropped to 1-5 in the conference and 4-10 on the season. The Wildcats return to the court on Saturday afternoon, when they travel to Post University for a tri-match against the host Eagles and also Mercy College.

Wilmington swept Post in a CACC contest 3-0 (25-21, 25-13, 25-23) to open the action, then defeated Mercy College 3-1 (20-25, 25-15, 25-16, 25-21) in a non-conference matcher later in the day.

Against Post, the Wildcats were led by junior Meghan Frick, who recorded a match-high nine kills and 17 digs. Sophomore Sheri Hunley added eight kills, while libero Brittany O’Neill notched 17 digs. Junior Michelle Boyd had seven kills and 10 digs, and setter Shannon Rumple posted 28 assists.

LAKEWOOD, NJ -- The Wildcats of Wilmington University were swept by the host Lions of Georgian Court University, 3-0 (18-25, 12-25, 24-26) in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) volleyball action on Tuesday evening at the GCU Wellness Center.

Senior middle hitter Brittani Leathern led the Wildcats with five kills. Junior libero Brittany O’Neill had a team-high 13 digs, while setter Shannon Rumple added 12 assists and nine digs.

Georgian Court was paced by Lissette Zayas, who posted 12 kills and 12 digs, while Brandi Arsenault added 10 kills. Setter Lisamary Figeroa had 30 assists, while libero Ana Cruz pitched in with a match-high 15 digs.

Following the match, Wilmington dropped to 2-4 in the CACC and 5-10 overall, while Georgian Court improved to 6-0 in the conference and 10-7 on the season. Wilmington took the first two sets by the identical scores of 25-14, and completed the sweep with a 25-20 win in the third and final set.

Wilmington was led by junior outside hitter Meghan Frick, who posted a match-high nine kills and 13 digs. Classmate Brittany O’Neill added 13 digs from the libero position, while fellow junior Michelle Boyd chipped in with five kills and eight digs. Setter Shannon Rumple posted 21 assists, four kills, and seven digs for the ‘Cats.

Chestnut Hill was led by Madison McGee, who recorded eight kills. Libero Elisabeth DiGregorio was outstanding defensively, notched a match-high 30 digs. The duo of Katherine Tohanczyn and Courtney Gallo each had 11 assists, while Nicole Corrado and Cassie Benson each had six kills.

NYACK, NY -- The Wildcats of Wilmington University dropped a tough match to the host Warriors of Nyack College, 3-2 in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) volleyball action on Saturday afternoon at the Bowman Gymnasium.

Wilmington won the first two sets 25-17 and 25-21, before dropping the next three 20-25, 22-25 and 10-15.

The Wildcats were led by junior Meghan Frick, who posted a team-high 19 kills and added 18 digs. Sophomore Paige Norvell had nine kills, while junior Michelle Boyd had six kills and seven aces. Junior libero Brittany O’Neal recorded a team-high 23 digs. Setter Shannon Rumple posted 38 assists and 14 digs for the ‘Cats.

Nyack was led by Brianne Cercone, who recorded 19 kills. Freshman Amelia Moore had nine kills, 14 digs and 13 asists. Megan Metcalf also added nine kills while Samantha Friday posted 14 digs. Setter Brooke Foyer recorded 29 assists, 21 digs and two aces.

Following the match, Wilmington dropped to 3-5 in the CACC and 6-11 on the season, while Nyack improved to 3-4 in the conference and 4-5 overall. Wilmington took the first set, 25-20, won the second by a score of 25-23, and completed the sweep with a thrilling 26-24 victory in the third and final set.

Wilmington was led by the duo of senior Brittani Leathern and sophomore Sheri Hunley. Leathern had seven blocks on the night, while Hunley chipped in with five blocks and five kills. Junior Meghan Frick added seven kills and 12 digs, while sophomore Paige Norvell had seven kills and seven digs. Setter Shannon Rumple had 23 assists and seven digs for the ‘Cats.

USP was paced by Christine Puschak, who posted a match-high 10 kills. Kirsten Lechner added nine kills, while Cady Rich had seven. Setter Sarah Hickman had 34 assists and 10 digs, while Kaylei DeHart notched 13 digs.

With the win, Wilmington improved to 4-5 in the CACC and 7-11 overall, while USP dropped to 6-3 in the CACC and 6-6 on the season. The Wildcats return to the court on Saturday afternoon for a tri-match between Felician College and Mercy College. Wilmington takes on Felician at 12:00 PM, followed by Mercy at 4:00 PM. The matches, “Dig For A Cure”, will feature the ‘Cats in pink uniforms as they team up to fight Breast Cancer.

NEW CASTLE, DE -- The Wildcats of Wilmington University broke out their pink uniforms in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month and their Dig For A Cure campaign, and with it found their winning ways, sweeping a pair of matches on Saturday afternoon at the Pratt Gymnasium.

In the first match of the day, Wilmington downed Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) foe Felician College, 3-0. The ‘Cats took the first set 25-19, won the second by a 25-15 margin, and completed the sweep with a 25-22 win in the third and final set.

The Wildcats were led by senior middle hitter Brittani Leathern, who posted 10 kills and four blocks. Sophomore middle hitter Sheri Hunley added nine kills and three blocks, while junior outside hitter Meghan Frick had 10 kills and nine digs. Sophomore Kim Shropshire had 16 digs, while junior Brittany O’Neill chipped in with a dozen digs. Sophomore setter Shannon Rumple had 33 assists and nine digs.

In the final match of the afternoon, Wilmington held off Mercy College, again winning in straight sets. The Wildcats won the first set 25-19, took the second by a 25-16 margin, and completed the sweep with a 29-27 come-from-behind win in the final set.

Wilmington was led by Leathern, who had nine kills. Hunley added eight kills and seven blocks, while Frick added six kills and 19 digs. O’Neill chipped in with 13 digs, and Rumple posted 35 assists and eight digs.

Wilmington was led by junior outside hitter Meghan Frick, who posted 10 kills and eight digs. Junior libero Brittany O’Neill added 13 digs, while sophomore Paige Norvell chipped in with 10 digs.

The Chargers took the first set 25-20, won the second set by a 25-13 margin, and completed the sweep with a 25-19 victory in the third set.

Wilmington was led by sophomore middle hitter Sheri Hunley who posted five kills. Classmate Paige Norvell added a match-high 15 digs, while juniors Brittany O’Neill and Meghan Frick each had 10 digs.

Dominican was led by Michelle Fiorvanti’s 14 kills and 11 digs. Courtney Heard added seven kills, while Whitney Ranger had six kills, 12 digs, and 31 assists. Libero Jordyn Fuller had 15 digs while Catherine Giordano posted 10 digs.

NEW CASTLE, DE -- The Wildcats of Wilmington University outlasted the visiting Tigers of Holy Family University in a thrilling 3-2 victory in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) volleyball action on Tuesday evening at the Pratt Gymnasium.

Holy Family won a very close first set, 25-23, but the ‘Cats rebounded to take the second set by a 25-15 margin. The Tigers answered back with a 25-16 victory in the third set. WILMINGTON VOLLEYBALL DEFEATS CONCORDIA, 3-1

BRONXVILLE, NY -- The Wildcats of Wilmington University defeated the host Clippers of Concordia College, 3-1 in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) volleyball action on Saturday afternoon. Wilmington took the first set 25-10, but Concordia rallied to take set two, 25-22. The Wildcats then took the third set by a 25-10 margin, and sealed the win with a 25-16 victory in the fourth and final set.

Wilmington was led by junior Michelle Boyd’s 11 kills. Classmate Meghan Frick added 10 kills and 24 digs, while senior middle hitter Brittani Leathern chipped in with eight kills and 10 blocks. Junior libero Brittany O’Neill continued her outstanding defense and notched a match-high 26 digs. Sophomore setter Shannon Rumple had 30 assists, eight digs, and four blocks in a solid all-around effort.

Concordia was paced by Courtney Hanson’s 12 kills. Olivia Thompson added seven kills and 12 digs, while Amanda Margedant added 16 digs and 21 assists. Amanda Byrd recorded a team-high 25 digs for the Clippers.

With the win, Wilmington improved to 8-7 in the CACC and 12-13 overall, while Concordia dropped to 0-14 in the conference and 0-21 on the season. The Wildcats return to the court on Tuesday evening, when they play host to the league-leading Lions of Georgian Court University in a CACC contest beginning at 7:00 PM.

VOLLEYBALL FALLS TO GEORGIAN COURT, 3-1

NEW CASTLE, DE -- The Wildcats of Wilmington University gave the visiting Lions of Georgian Court University all they could handle, but they still came up short, falling 3-1 in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) volleyball action on Tuesday evening at the Pratt Gymnasium.

Georgian Court took the first set by a 25-13 margin, but the ‘Cats answered back with a 25-19 win in set two. Wilmington had the lead in the third set, but fell late and lost 25-23. The Lions sealed the victory with a 25-13 set in the fourth and final set.

Wilmington was led by junior outside hitter Meghan Frick, who had eight kills and 17 digs. Sophomore Paige Norvell added six kills and 15 digs, while senior middle hitter Brittani Leathern had six kills and three blocks. Junior libero Brittany O’Neill had 11 digs, while sophomore setter Shannon Rumple had 26 assists and four aces.

The Lions were led by Lissette Zayas, who posted 10 kills and 19 digs. Stephanie Rivera added 11 kills, while Janelle Murdock chipped in with 10 kills and eight digs. Setter Lisamary Figueroa had seven kills, 39 assists, and 13 digs in a solid all-around effort, while libero Ana Cruz recoded a match-high 20 digs.

Following the game, Wilmington dropped to 8-8 in the CACC and 12-14 overall, while Georgian Court improved to 15-0 in the CACC and 20-8 on the season. The Wildcats return to the court on Thursday eveving, when they travel to take on the Griffins of Chestnut Hill College in a CACC contest beginning at 7:00 PM.

VOLLEYBALL BLANKS CHESNUT HILL, 3-0

PHILADELPHIA, PA -- The Lady Wildcats of Wilmington University downed the host Griffins of Chestnut Hill College, 3-0 in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) volleyball action on Thursday evening at Sorgenti Arena.

Wilmington took the first set by a 25-12 margin, won set two by a score of 25-9, and completed the sweep with a 25-16 victory in the third and final set.

The Wildcats were led by junior Meghan Frick, who posted seven kills, eight aces, and six digs. Sophomore Paige Norvell added eight kills, while senior Brittani Leathern chipped in with six kills. Sophomore Shannon Rumple had 21 assists and nine digs, while junior Brittany O’Neill recorded 11 digs.

Chestnut Hill was led by Cassie Benson’s seven kills. Elisabeth DiGregorio had a match-high 14 digs, while Bobbie Chukuntarod had 11 digs.

With the win, Wilmington improved to 9-8 in the CACC and 13-14 overall, while Chestnut Hill dropped to 0-16 in the conference and 4-23 on the season. The Wildcats return to the court on Saturday afternoon, when they travel to Caldwell College for a tri-match between the host Cougars at 12:00, followed by a non-conference tilt against Southern Connecticut State at 2:00 PM.

VOLLEYBALL SPLITS A PAIR OF MATCHES AT CALDWELL TRI-MATCH

CALDWELL, NJ -- The Wildcats of Wilmington University split a pair of matches at Caldwell College, in tri-match action on Saturday afternoon at the Newman Center. Wilmington fell to Caldwell in a CACC contest 3-0 (16-25, 15-25, 20-25) to open the action, then defeated Southern Connecticut State University 3-2 (19-25, 25-23, 25-17, 12-25, 15-13 )in a non-conference match later in the day.

Against Caldwell, the Wildcats were paced by junior Meghan Frick, who had 13 kills and seven digs. Classmate Michelle Boyd added five kills and 12 digs, while sophomore libero Kim Shropshire had 10 digs. Setter Shannon Rumple had 20 assists and seven digs.

In the win over Southern Connecticut State, Wilmington was led by Boyd’s 11 kills and 14 digs. Sophomore Paige Norvell added 10 kills and 11 digs, while senior middle hitter Brittani Leathern had eight kills and seven blocks. Shropshire had a match-high 26 digs, while Rumple had 37 assists.

Following the matches, Wilmington’s record is 9-9 in the CACC and 14-15 overall. The Wildcats return to the court on Saturday afternoon, when they close out their regular season by hosting the Deacons of Bloomfield College in a CACC contest beginning at 12:00 PM.

VOLLEYBALL EDGED BY BLOOMFIELD, 3-2

NEW CASTLE, DE -- The Wildcats of Wilmington University were edged by the visiting Deacons of Bloomfield College, 3-2 in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) volleyball action on Saturday afternoon at the Pratt Gymnasium.

Wilmington won the first set by a score of 25-22, but Bloomfield rallied to take the next two sets, 21-25 and 23-25. The forced a fifth set by winning 25-23 in the fourth, but ultimately fell in the final set by a 15-13 margin.

The ‘Cats were led by senior middle hitter Brittani Leathern, who posted 15 kills and nine blocks. Junior outside hitter Meghan Frick added 13 kills and 20 digs, while sophomore Paige Norvell chipped in with nine kills and 10 digs. Sophomore setter Shannon Rumple had 42 assists and 12 digs, and junior libero Brittany O’Neill recorded a match-high 26 digs.

Bloomfield was led by Ursula Pereira’s 27 kills and 18 digs. Da’Cheray Thomas added 13 kills while setter Gabriella Betoni had 53 assists and 19 digs. Libero Brittany Devries recorded 23 digs, while Uerequenia Pereira posted eight kills and 13 digs.

Following the match, Wilmington closed out their season with a 9-10 record in the CACC and an overall mark of 14-16, while Bloomfield improved to 9-10 in the conference and 9-18 on the season.
