‘CATS GO 1-1 IN OPENING DAY OF MARAUDER VOLLEYBALL CLASH
MILLERSVILLE, PA -- The Wildcats of Wilmington University opened their season with a 1-1 showing at the Marauder Volleyball Clash on Friday afternoon at Pucillo Gymnasium. Wilmington fell to host Millersville University, 3-0 in the opener, but rallied to defeat Bowie State, 3-0 later on in the afternoon.
Against Millersville, the ‘Cats dropped three straight sets by scores of 25-21, 25-18, and 25-20. Senior setter Shannon Rumple led the way with 22 assists and six digs, while classmate Paige Norvell recorded a team-high eight digs. Junior outside hitter Nicole Wiechecki tallied eight kills, while her sophomore counterpart Brooke Foskey also had eight kills.
In the win over Bowie State, Wilmington disposed of the Bulldogs in straight sets (25-12, 25-15, 25-7). Sophomore middle hitter Katie Shorter recorded eight kills, while Wiechecki added five kills and seven digs. Senior libero Kim Srhopshire notched five aces, and sophomore outside hitter Ann Marie Scarfo also tallied five aces to go along with her three kills.
Following the matches, Wilmington now stands at 1-1 to start the season. The Wildcats continue play at the Marauder Volleyball Clash tomorrow at noon, when they take on Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference foe, Georgian Court University.
VOLLEYBALL GOES 1-1 ON FINAL DAY OF ACTION AT MILLERSVILLE TOURNAMENT
MILLERSVILLE, PA -- Wilmington University closed out play at the Marauder Volleyball Clash, going 1-1 on their final day of action at the tournament. The Wildcats opened the day with a thrilling 3-2 win over Georgian Court University, but fell to Slippery Rock University 3-1 later on in the afternoon.
The opening match was an exciting one, as the ‘cats disposed of Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference foe Georgian Court in five sets. The Lions took the first by a score of 25-21, but the Wildcats rallied to win the second 25-21. Georgian Court easily won the third, 25-14, but Wilmington fought back to take the fourth by a score of 25-20, and then put them away with a 15-11 victory in the fifth and final set.
Junior Nicole Wiechecki led the way, posting nine kills and nine digs, while senior Kim Shropshire was outstanding defensively, recording 16 digs. Sophomore Brittany Biddle added seven kills, while classmate Brooke Foskey chipped in with six. Senior setter Shannon Rumple posted 22 assists, while freshman Kasey Couch added 11.
The win against Georgian Court, gave Wilmington the number two seed in their bracket and advanced them to the Gold Semifinals, where they met up with Slippery Rock. After a grueling five set match against the Lions, the ‘Cats struggled out of the gates and dropped the first set, 25-9. They rebounded to take the second, 25-23, but ran out of gas, allowing Slippery Rock to take the next two, 25-15 and 25-22 to win the match.
Wiechecki again led the way with nine kills, while Foskey chipped in with eight. Shropshire posted 22 digs, while Rumple and Couch had 18 and 11 digs, respectively.
Following the games, Wilmington now stands at 2-2 on the season. The Wildcats are off for a week, before they return to action next Saturday afternoon. They travel to the University of the Sciences, where they will take on Bentley University and Pace University.
VOLLEYBALL FALLS TO PACE 3-0, DEFEATS BENTLEY 3-1 AT USCIENCES QUAD MATCH
PHILADELPHIA, PA -- The Wildcats of Wilmington University traveled to the University of the Sciences for a pair of matches against Pace University and Bentley University in non-conference volleyball action on Saturday afternoon at Bobby Morgan Arena. The Wildcats fell in the opener to Pace, 3-0, but knocked off Bentley later on in the day by a score of 3-1.
In the loss to Pace, Wilmington fell by game scores of 25-21, 25-14, and 25-20. Junior outside hitter Nicole Wiechecki led the way, posting a double-double of 10 kills and 10 digs. Senior libero Kim Shropshire added 15 digs, while classmate Shannon Rumple had 17 assists, and five digs. Sophomore outside hitter Brooke Foskey posted nine kills, while classmate Katie Shorter had five kills and four blocks.
The Wildcats defeated Bentley, 25-21, 25-19, 19-25, and 25-15. Again, Wiechecki led the way, posting a match-high 18 kills to go along with nine digs. Foskey added eight kills, while sophomore middle hitter Brittany Biddle chipped in with seven kills. The setting duo of Rumple and freshman Kasey Couch had 24 and 18 assists respectively, while Couch posted a career high 10 digs. Senior Paige Norvell added six kills and five blocks.
Following the matches, Wilmington now stands at 3-3 overall. The ‘Cats return to the court on Tuesday evening, when they travel to take on cross-town rival Goldey-Beacom College in their Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) opener. Game time is slated for 7:00 PM.
‘CATS CRUISE PAST RIVAL LIGHTING, 3-0 IN VOLLEYBALL
WILMINGTON, DE -- The Wildcats of Wilmington University made quick work of their cross-town rival Goldey-Beacom College, as they swept the host Lightning 3-0 in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) volleyball action on Tuesday evening at the Jones Center.
Wilmington won the first set by a score of 25-16, and then took the second and third sets by identical 25-16 scores.
The ‘Cats were led by the duo of Nicole Wiechecki and Brittany Biddle, Wiechecki, a junior outside hitter, posted a match-high 15 kills, as she hit. 367 on the evening. Biddle, a sophomore middle hitter, tallied 10 kills and six blocks, and hit a match-high .400. Senior setter Shannon Rumple added 25 assists and nine digs, while sophomore outside hitter Brooke Foskey added eight kills.
Goldey-Beacom was paced by Kadi McCoy’s eight kills. Rebecca Stoffer and Roni Shaner each added seven kills, while setter Monica Dempsey chipped in with 19 assists and 14 digs.
With the win, Wilmington improved to 1-0 in the CACC and 4-3 overall, while Goldey-Beacom dropped to 1-1 in the conference and 4-5 on the season. The Wildcats are back in action on Thursday evening, when they host the Lions of Georgian Court in their 2011 home opener. The CACC contest is slated to begin at 7:00 PM.
VOLLEYBALL SWEEPS GEORGIAN COURT FOR FIRST TIME IN SIX YEARS
NEW CASTLE, DE -- Wilmington University swept the visiting Lions of Georgian Court University, 3-0 in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) volleyball action on Thursday evening at the Pratt Center.
The Wildcats took the first set by a score of 25-19, and used a late rally to take set two, 25-21. Georgian Court had the momentum early in set three, taking a quick four point lead, but the ‘Cats quickly turned things around and easily dispatched the Lions, 25-15. The three-set victory marks the first sweep for Wilmington over Georgian Court, since September of 2005.
Wilmington was led by senior right side hitter Paige Norvell, who posted seven kills and two blocks. The sophomore duo of Katie Shorter and Brooke Foskey each tallied five kills, while Shorter recorded six blocks. Freshman Mia Padilla led the defense, notching 10 digs, while senior libero Kim Shropshire added nine. Senior setter Shannon Rumple posted 10 assists and four aces for the ‘Cats.
Georgian Court was led by Tatiana Villariny’s seven kills. Maria Antimisiaris added six kills and seven digs, while setter Jaslene Lopez chipped in with 18 assists and 10 digs.

VOLLEYBALL MAKES IN FOUR IN A ROW WITH 3-0 SWEEP OF CONCORDIA
BRONXVILLE, NY -- The Wildcats of Wilmington University won their fourth consecutive match, as they swept the host Clippers of Concordia College, 3-0 in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) volleyball action on Saturday afternoon.
Wilmington took the extended first set by a score of 30-28, and won the second by a 25-13 margin. The ‘Cats completed the sweep with a 25-13 victory in the third and final set.
Sophomore middle hitter Brittany Biddle led the way, as she registered eight kills and one block. Classmate Brooke Foskey tallied seven kills, and hit an astounding .545 on the match. Junior Nicole Wiechecki added six kills and three aces, while senior setter Shannon Rumple chipped in with four kills, 14 assists, and four aces.
Concordia received seven kills each from Irina Impellittiere and Courtney Hanson. Setter Hillary Hoffman added 21 assists, while Amanda Margedant chipped in with a match-high 10 digs.

GRIFFINS OUTLAST WILDCATS, 3-2 IN VOLLEYBALL
PHILADELPHIA, PA -- Wilmington University dropped its first ever decision to Chestnut Hill in volleyball, as the Griffins outlasted the ‘Cats, 3-2 in a thrilling five set, Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) match on Tuesday evening at Sorgenti Arena.
The Wildcats took the first set by a score of 25-20, but it was the Griffins who rallied to take set two, 25-22. Wilmington then handled the hosts easily in set three, winning 25-14, but Chestnut Hill prevailed in a tight fourth set, 25-23. In the fifth and final set, it was the Griffins who took the early lead, and Wilmington clawed their way back in, but a late run by Chestnut Hill sealed the victory, and gave them the fifth and decisive set, 15-10.
Wilmington was led by junior outside hitter Nicole Wiechecki, who posted 15 kills and 16 digs. Sophomore outside hitter Brooke Foskey added 13 kills and 10 digs, while classmate Brittany Biddle recorded 11 kills and five blocks. Senior setter Shannon Rumple posted a double-double with 25 assists and 10 digs, while her freshman counterpart Kasey Couch notched 16 assists and seven digs. Senior libero Kim Shropshire had 22 digs, while freshman defensive specialist Mia Padilla added 11.
Chestnut Hill was led by Alex DePalma’s match-high 19 kills and 18 digs. Cassie Benson chipped in with 12 kills and five blocks, while setter Sidney Chukuntarod notched 42 assists and 12 digs. Libero Liz DiGregorio recorded a match-high 29 digs.
Following the game, Wilmington dropped to 3-1 in the CACC and 6-7 overall, while Chestnut Hill improved to 1-2 in the conference and 6-7 on the season. Philadelphia was led by Brittany Olson’s nine kills. Adrienne Stigura added seven digs and 17 assists. Heather Martin recorded 11 assists, while Danielle Carney posted a team-high 10 digs.
The Wildcats hit .223 on the evening, led by Wiechecki’s .429 effort. Wilmington held the Rams to just a .027 hitting percentage, and the ‘Cats recorded 11 total team blocks

The Wildcats lost the first two sets, 25-19 and 25-18, before winning the third set by a 25-19 score. The Cougars then took charge and erased any chance of a comeback with a 25-14 win in the fourth and final set.
The Wildcats were led by senior Paige Norvell, who posted 11 kills and eight digs, while hitting .400 on the afternoon. Sophomore middle hitter Katie Shorter added nine kills and four blocks, while the outside hitter duo of Nicole Wiechecki and Brooke Foskey each recorded seven kills. The Wildcats (5-2 CACC/8-5) disposed of their rivals in three games. Wilmington won the first set by a 25-12 score, but the Lightning (3-4 CACC/7-8) regrouped and made the ‘Cats work a little harder in sets two and three. The hosts took the second set by a 25-23 score, and rallied from being down 24-22, to take the third and final set, 27-25.
The sophomore duo of Katie Shorter and Brooke Foskey led the ‘Cats, as each posted 10 kills on the evening. Shorter hit an astounding .667 and added six blocks. Junior Nicole Wiechecki had nine kills, while setter Shannon Rumple chipped in with 22 assists and 11 digs. WATERBURY, CT -- The outside hitter tandem of Brooke Foskey and Nicole Wiechecki combined for 24 kills to help lead the Wildcats of Wilmington University to a 3-0 sweep over the host Eagles of Post University in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) volleyball action on Saturday afternoon at the Drubner Center.
Wilmington (6-2 CACC/9-5) won the first set 25-21, followed that with a 25-23 victory in set two, and completed the sweep with a 25-14 victory in the third and final set.
Foskey, a sophomore, registered a match-high 13 kills, while hitting .440 on the afternoon. Wiechecki, a junior, added 11 kills, four aces, and eight digs, while also posting a .400 hitting average. Sophomore middle hitter Katie Shorter had six kills and three blocks, hitting a match-high .600, while classmate Brittany Biddle added five kills and three blocks. The setter duo of Shannon Rumple and Kasey Couch posted 15 and 11 assists, respectively, while senior libero Kim Shropshire added nine digs.
Post (4-4 CACC/5-12) was led by Belinda Snider’s nine kills. Kelli Reynolds added eight kills, while Emily Wilman chipped in with seven kills. Setter Taylor Doyle had 21 assists and Courtney Braun paced the defense with a match-high 13 digs.

VOLLEYBALL CAN’T OUTLAST HOLY FAMILY, FALLS 3-2
NEW CASTLE, DE -- Despite almost out-playing the Tigers in every facet of the game, Wilmington could not outlast Holy Family and fell 3-2 in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) volleyball action on Tuesday evening at the Pratt Center.
The Wildcats (6-3 CACC/9-6) gave the league leading Tigers (9-0 CACC/12-9) all they could handle, but mental mistakes cost the chance at a huge upset victory. Wilmington won the first set in convincing fashion, 25-11, but Holy Family took set two by a 25-18 score. The ‘Cats allowed the Tigers to hang around in set three, but prevailed 25-23. Holy Family trailed for much of set four, but rallied late and evened things up with a 25-23 win. Wilmington jumped out to an early lead in the fifth and final set, but could not put the visitors away, and crucial serving errors gave the Tigers the momentum they needed to come away with a 15-9 victory.
Wilmington was led by sophomore outside hitter Brooke Foskey, who posted 14 kills. Classmate Brittany Biddle added 12 kills and four blocks, while junior Nicole Wiechecki had 11 kills and a match-high 22 digs. Setter Shannon Rumple had 35 assists, while libero Kim Shropshire posted 13 digs.
Holy Family was led by Jillian Keeve’s 14 kills and 15 digs. Devyn Ingram added 12 kills and nine digs, while libero Jordan Beland posted 17 digs. Setter Chelsea Keegan had 46 assists and eight digs for the Tigers.

The Wildcats (7-3 CACC/10-6) started slow, and dropped the first set by a score of 25-23. Wilmington then got things going in set two and came away with a 25-19 victory to even things up. The ‘Cats then cruised in set three with a 25-9 win, and sealed the match with a 25-20 victory in the fourth and final set.
Scarfo posted seven kills in just three sets, while classmate Katie Shorter added 13. Junior Nicole Wiechecki had nine kills and 20 digs, while sophomore Brittany Biddle had five kills. Senior libero Kim Shropshire notched a match-high 23 digs and five aces, while setter Shannon Rumple had 18 assists and four aces. Fellow setter Kasey Couch chipped in 17 assists and nine digs, while freshman defensive specialist Mia Padilla had 14 digs.

The Wildcats (8-4 CACC/11-7) were led by sophomore middle hitter Brittany Biddle, who notched eight kills while hitting a team-high .318. The ‘Cats (12-7) were led by sophomore middle hitter Katie Shorter, who posted eight kills and four blocks, while hitting .583 on the match. Sophomore Ann Marie Scarfo added six kills and five digs, while Brittany Biddle, Brooke Foskey, and Paige Norvell each chipped in with four kills. FOUR WILDCATS REGISTER DOUBLE-DIGIT KILLS IN THRILLING 3-2 WIN OVER DOMINICAN
NEW CASTLE, DE -- Wilmington University had four players register double-digit kills, as the Wildcats completed a thrilling 3-2 comeback victory over the visiting Chargers of Dominican College in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) volleyball action on Saturday afternoon at the Pratt Center.
The Wildcats fell in the first set 25-20, before holding off Dominican 25-22 for a victory in set two. Wilmington had the Chargers on the ropes, 24-22 in the third set, but Dominican rallied to win 27-25. The ‘Cats held on for a 25-22 victory in the fourth set to even things up at two, and their comeback was complete with a 15-8 win in the fifth and final set. Wilmington trailed 8-7 in the fifth, but the hosts scored the match’s final eight points to seal the deal.

Senior setter Shannon Rumple surpassed 2,000 career assists midway through the third set, and was awarded a game ball along with a picture commemorating the achievement.
The Wildcats sported “pink” jerseys in support of Breast Cancer Awareness Month as they took the opening set 25-20. Moving on, the Lady Wildcats kept full steam ahead to win the second set 25-17. They completed the sweep of the Devils with a narrow 25-23 victory in the third and final set.
Wilmington was led by junior outside hitter Nicole Wiechecki who recorded 11 kills and 12 digs. Sophomore middle hitter Katie Shorter posted nine kills and four blocks, while hitting .300 on the evening. Paige Norvell, Brittany Biddle, and Brooke Foskey each added five kills, while freshman Mia Padilla led the defense with a match-high 13 digs. Rumple finished the match with 24 assists, seven digs, five blocks, and three aces as she had a solid all-around effort.
The University of the Sciences was led by Amanda DeAngelo’s 12 kills and 11 digs. Rachel Martin posted eight kills and two blocks. Stacey Wooden added four kills and 11 digs, while Diana Solomon had four kills, 16 assists, and 10 digs.
With the win, Wilmington improved to 10-4 in the CACC, and 14-7 overall. USciences dropped to 3-11 in the conference and 3-17 on the season. The Wildcats are back in action on Thursday night, when they travel to take on the Lions of Georgian Court University in a CACC contest beginning at 7 PM.
‘CATS ROLL PAST GEORGIAN COURT IN THREE
LAKEWOOD, NJ -- Wilmington University made short work of host Georgian Court University, as the Wildcats easily downed the Lions, 3-0 in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) volleyball action on Thursday evening at the Wellness Center.
The Wildcats won the first set in convincing fashion, 25-10, and took the second by a score of 25-14. Wilmington (11-4 CACC/15-7) completed the sweep with a 25-18 victory in the third and final set.
The ‘Cats were led by sophomore middle hitter Brittany Biddle, who pated a match-high seven kills and seven blocks, while hitting .583 on the evening. Classmate Brooke Foksey added five kills, while junior outside hitter Nicole Wiechecki chipped in five kills and six digs. Senior setter Shannon Rumple had 10 assists and six digs, while classmate Paige Norvell had two kills and four blocks. Libero Kim Shropshire recorded three aces and six digs.
Georgian Court (6-9 CACC/7-19) was paced by Jhoann Agosto’s six kills. Tatiana Villariny and Amy Berry each had four kills, while Berry contributed a match-high seven digs. Setter Jaslene Lopez added 15 assists for the Lions.
The Wildcats held Georgian Court to a negative hitting percentage (-.080) for the match, while connecting at a .278 clip of their own.
Wilmington returns to the court on Saturday afternoon, when they travel to take on the Warriors of Nyack College in a CACC contest beginning at 1:00 PM.
VOLLEYBALL SWEEPS NYACK FOR FOURTH STRAIGHT WIN
NYACK, NY -- Wilmington University recorded their fourth straight win with a 3-0 sweep of the host Warriors of Nyack College in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) volleyball action on Saturday afternoon.
The Wildcats won the first set by a score of 25-21, and took the second set 25-16. They completed the three game sweep to extend their winning streak with a 25-18 victory in the third and final set.
Wilmington (12-4 CACC/16-7) was led by junior Nicole Wiechecki, who recorded a double-double with 10 kills and 11 digs. Sophomore Katie Shorter added 10 kills and hit .444, while classmate Brittany Biddle added six kills and hit at a .545 clip. Senior setter Shannon Rumple notched 14 assists, six aces, and six digs, while freshman Kasey Couch chipped in with 10 assists and seven digs. Libero Kim Shropshire recorded a match-high 12 digs.
Nyack (10-6 CACC/11-12) was paced by Tawnie Savage’s nine kills and 11 digs. Brianna Kane added six kills, 19 assists, and 11 digs, while Amy Dorvick also posted six kills. Amelia Moore had 13 assist for the Warriors, who received 11 digs and four kills from Debbie Schendell.
Next up for the Wildcats is a road contest against the CACC South leading Tigers of Holy Family University on Tuesday evening. Game time is slated for 7:00 PM.

Holy Family (16-1 CACC/19-10) took the first set by a score of 25-17, while Wilmington was able to win the second, 25-21. The Tigers took the third set, 25-21, and rallied to take the fourth, 25-22. The ‘Cats had a 20-15 lead at one point during the fourth set, but were unable to put the hosts away and force a fifth set.
Wilmington (12-5 CACC/16-8) was led by junior outside hitter Nicole Wiechecki, who posted eight kills and a match-high 15 digs. Sophomore middle hitter Brittany Biddle added seven kills and six blocks, while senior opposite Paige Norvell had five kills. WILMINGTON OUTLASTS CHESTNUT HILL, 3-1 IN VOLLEYBALL
NEW CASTLE, DE -- The Wildcats of Wilmington University had three players in double-digit kills, as they outlasted the visiting Griffins of Chestnut Hill College, 3-1 in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) volleyball action on Thursday evening at the Pratt Center.
Prior to the match, Wilmington honored their four seniors, Sheri Hunley, Paige Norvell, Shannon Rumple, and Kim Shropshire. Hunley, Rumple, and Shropshire are four-year players for the Wildcats, while Norvell has spent three seasons in the green and white.
The Wildcats (13-5 CACC/17-8) took the first set, 27-25 in a hard fought battle. The second set required a little extra as well, and once again it was the ‘Cats on top, 28-26. Chestnut Hill rallied to take the third, by a 25-23 score. Wilmington then pulled it together and easily dismissed the Griffins in the fourth and final set, 25-15.

Chestnut Hill (8-9 CACC/13-16) was paced by Alex DePalma’s 11 kills and 17 digs. Cassie Benson added nine kills and seven blocks, while Katie Schock also chipped in nine kills. Setter Sidney Chunkuntarod had 36 assists and 14 digs, while libero Liz DiGregorio posted a match-high 22 digs.
Wilmington returns to the court on Saturday afternoon when they host a tri-match with Bloomfield College and Bowie State University. The Wildcats take on the Deacons in a CACC match beginning at noon, followed by a non-conference tilt against the Bulldogs at 4:00 PM.

NEW CASTLE, DE -- Wilmington University swept Bloomfield College and Bowie State University in tri-match action on Saturday afternoon at the Pratt Center.
In the opening match, a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference affair, the Wildcats downed the Deacons of Bloomfield (6-12 CACC/7-15) in three. Wilmington won the first by a 25-18 score, and took the second and third sets by identical 25-19 scores.
The ‘Cats were led by junior outside hitter Nicole Wiechecki, who posted 10 kills, five digs, and five aces. Sophomore outside hitter Brooke Foskey added nine kills, while hitting a match high .529, while classmate Brittany Biddle chipped in six kills and two blocks. Senior setter Shannon Rumple had 17 assists, while her freshman counterpart Kasey Couch chipped in 10.
In the final match of the day, Wilmington swept the Bulldogs of Bowie State (9-23) in what could be the final volleyball match played at the Pratt Center. The Wildcats won in easy fashion, 25-13, 25-8, and 25-7. There is an outside chance Wilmington could host the first round of the CACC Playoffs, but the last regular season match at the Pratt will go down as a victory.
Sophomore Katie Shorter led the way for the ‘Cats, posting six kills, three blocks, and hitting a match-high .667. Foskey added six kills, while Biddle had five kills and hit an impressive .625. Sophomore Ann Marie Scarfo had four kills, eight digs, and a match-high seven aces, while Rumple had 23 assists for the hosts.
Following the matches, Wilmington improved to 14-5 in the CACC and 19-8 overall. The Wildcats hit the road for their next contest, traveling to take on the Rams of Shepherd University for a non-conference tilt on Tuesday evening. Game time is slated for 6:00 PM.

SHEPHERDSTOWN, WV -- Wilmington University fell 3-0 to the host Rams of Shepherd University in non-conference volleyball action on Tuesday evening at the Butcher Center. The Wildcats fell in straight sets, 25-17, 25-19, and 25-21.
Sophomore middle hitter Katie Shorter led the way for Wilmington (19-9), notching 10 kills while connecting at a .643 clip. Classmate Brittany Biddle added five kills and three blocks, while senior setter Shannon Rumple had 14 assists and eight digs. Freshman Mia Padilla led the defense with 12 digs, while senior Kim Shropshire chipped in 10.
Shepherd (16-14) was paced by Meg Kenny’s 10 kills and seven digs. Melani Lewis added seven kills, while setter Lauren Jescheinik had 23 assists and 11 digs. Taylor Belella had 10 digs while Lauren Gardner and Sarah Michael each recorded eight.
The Wildcats return to action next Tuesday evening, when they take part in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference playoffs. The quarterfinal round will take place at 7:00 PM at a site to be determined. Wilmington will be either the second or third seed in the southern division , with the opponent and site announced on Thursday evening, when the remaining CACC schedule is completed.
VOLLEYBALL UPSETS DOMINICAN IN FIRST ROUND OF CACC TOURNAMENT
ORANGEBURG, NY -- The Wildcats of Wilmington University were the only upset winners in the opening round of the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) volleyball tournament, as the ‘Cats posted a 3-1 victory over Dominican College on Tuesday evening at the Hennessey Center.
Wilmington, the number three seed in the southern division, upset Chargers of Dominican, who were the second-seed in the northern division. The Wildcats took the first set by a score of 25-21 and went up 2-0 after a 25-20 victory in the second set. Dominican rallied to take the third set 25-20, but Wilmington put the match away with a 25-21 win in the fourth and final set.
Outside hitter Nicole Wiechecki, celebrated her birthday in a big way, as the junior erupted for 15 kills, 17 digs, and five service aces. The sophomore duo of Brittany Biddle and Brooke Foskey each added a dozen kills, while classmate Katie Shorter had seven kills. Senior libero Kim Shropshire had 16 digs, while freshman Mia Padilla added 12. Senior setter Shannon Rumple had 34 assists, 13 digs, and three aces, while freshman Kasey Couch posted 10 digs for the Wildcats.
Dominican was paced by Michelle Fiorvanti’s 18 kills and 13 digs, but the ‘Cats held her to just a .157 hitting percentage. Kayla Dexter added 12 kills, while setter Whitney Ranger had 41 assists and 15 digs. Libero Jordyn Fuller recorded a match-high 20 digs for the Chargers.
The Wildcats hit .185 as a team, while holding Dominican to a .145 hitting percentage. Shorter connected at a .375 clip, while Wiechecki hit .279. In the first two sets, Wilmington held the Chargers to just .094 and .050 hitting percentages.
With the win, Wilmington improved to 20-9 on the season, and Dominican closed the books on their 2011 campaign with an 18-14 record. The Wildcats now advance to the CACC Semifinals, where they will take on the southern division’s top-seeded Tigers of Holy Family University. Game time is slated for 7:30 PM at Georgian Court University in Lakewood, New Jersey.
VOLLEYBALL'S SEASON ENDS WITH 3-1 DEFEAT TO #1 HOLY FAMILY IN CACC SEMIFINALS
LAKEWOOD, NJ -- The hopes were that it would be extremely difficult to beat a team three times in a row in one season, but the Tigers of Holy Family University did just that on Friday evening, and in the process ruined the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference volleyball championship hopes of the Wildcats of Wilmington University with a 3-1 defeat in the semi-final round at Georgian Court University.
Holy Family (25-10) took the first set, 25-20, but the ‘Cats evened things up with a 25-20 victory in the second sent. The Tigers then rallied to take set three by a 25-18 margin, and sealed the win with another 25-18 set in the fourth.
Wilmington struggled to get things going offensively all night, as the Wildcats hit just .110 on the evening. Defense wasn’t a strong suit either, as the ‘Cats recorded 12 serve receive errors. The Tigers connected at a .242 clip and notched 43 kills, compared to just 27 for Wilmington.
The Wildcats were led by junior Nicole Wiechecki, who posted eight kills, nine digs, and four aces. Sophomore Brittany Biddle had seven kills and four blocks, while classmate Katie Shorter added six kills and eight blocks.
