WILDCATS FALL IN SEASON OPENER, 22-17 TO SHEPHERD
NEW CASTLE, DE -- Wilmington University dropped their season opener to the visiting Shepherd Rams, 22-17 in non-conference women’s lacrosse action on Saturday afternoon at the Kirkwood Complex.
Shepherd jumped out to a 14-7 lead at the half, and held on for the five-goal victory. Wilmington received solid performances from senior Danielle Niccoli (4 goals, 2 assists), sophomore Liz Case (3 goals, 1 assist), junior Kory Webster (3 goals), junior Jess Graybeal (2 goals, 1 assist) and senior Amber Harmon (2 goals). Sophomore Molly Taylor also added a goal, while junior Eliza Burk chipped in with a pair of assists.
Freshman Corinne Dries (0-1) suffered the loss in her first collegiate start between the pipes, as was peppered with 40 shots and recorded 14 saves.
Following the loss, Wilmington dropped to 0-1 to start the season. The Wildcats return to action on Monday afternoon, when they travel to take on the Spartans of St. Thomas Aquinas College in a non-conference match up beginning at 2:00 PM. The game will take place at SUNY-Maritime.
LACROSSE PICKS UP FIRST WIN OF SEASON WITH 17-13 VICTORY OVER ST. THOMAS AQUINAS
SPARKILL, NY -- The Wildcats of Wilmington University earned their first win of the 2011 season, with a 17-13 victory over the host Spartans of St. Thomas Aquinas College in non-conference women’s lacrosse action on Monday afternoon.
Wilmington jumped out to an 8-1 lead after the first nine minutes, but the Spartans responded right before the half with three straight goals right before the half to make it 9-6. The Wildcats ran off five straight to open the second half to pull away, and held on for their first victory.
The ‘Cats were led by sophomore Liz Case, who posted four goals and two assists. Junior Becca Guethler had a hat trick, while the trio of Eliza Burk, Jessica Stratton, and Amber Harmon each added a pair of goals. Wilmington received single goals from Molly Taylor (1 assist), Meggan Apgar, Jess Graybeal, and Danielle Niccoli.
Freshman Corinne Dries (1-1) picked up her first collegiate win between the pipes as she recorded 13 saves on 38 shots in a busy afternoon.
With the win, Wilmington improved to 1-1 on the season while St. Thomas Aquinas dropped to 1-2 overall. The Wildcats return to the field on Wednesday afternoon, when they take on Division I Howard University in a non-conference tilt beginning at 3:00 PM.

WASHINGTON, DC -- Wilmington University fell to Howard University, 17-7 in non-conference women’s lacrosse action on Wednesday afternoon.
Senior Danielle Niccoli led the ‘Cats with four goals, while Eliza Burk and Liz Case each added a single goal. Freshman goalkeeper Corinne Dries recorded four saves.

NEW CASTLE, DE -- Georgian Court opened the game with four straight goals, and never looked back as they downed the host Wildcats of Wilmington University, 19-6 in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) women’s lacrosse action on Tuesday afternoon at the Kirkwood Complex.
The Lions received seven goals from Lauren Conaty, who also dished out a pair of assists. Molly McCourt added four goals, while Ryan McGrath chipped in with a pair of goals and four assists. Georgian Court’s Shannon Mastrogiovanni and Alley Abbate each chipped in with a pair of goals.
Wilmington was led by Eliza Burk, who posted two goals and an assist. Danielle Niccoli also netted a pair of goals, and addied an assist. Jessica Stratton and Amber Harmon rounded out the scoring for the ‘Cats with a goal apiece, who also received an assist from Liz Case.

HILLBURN, NY -- Wilmington University allowed seven second-half goals, and fell to the host Chargers of Dominican College, 12-6 in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) women’s lacrosse action at the Torne Valley Complex.
The score was tied at five at halftime, but Dominican came out on fire in the second half and netted five unanswered goals to pull away. Wilmington would find the back of the net just once in the second half, and could not contain the Charger rally.
The Wildcats were led by Rebecca Guethler, who netted two goals. Danielle Niccolie and Eliza Burk each added a goal and an assist, while Kory Webster and Jessica Stratton posted a goal apiece. Corrine Dries (2-5) recorded 10 saves in goal for the ‘Cats.

‘CATS FALL IN FINAL SECONDS TO HOLY FAMILY, 16-15
NEW CASTLE, DE -- A last minute goal from Holy Family sent the Wildcats of Wilmington University away with a heartbreaking 16-15 defeat to the Tigers in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) women’s lacrosse action on Wednesday afternoon at the Kirkwood Complex.
The game was close early on in the first half, as neither team held more than a two-goal lead until late in the period. It wasn’t until the final minute that a late Holy Family goal gave the visitors as 12-9 lead they took into halftime.
The Tigers could not pull away, as Wilmington hung right with them, and eventually took the lead (15-14) with just over five minutes remaining. Holy Family tied the game just 35 seconds later, and with 33 ticks left on the clock, secured the win on a goal from Jennifer James (6 goals on the game).
Wilmington was led by senior Danielle Niccoli, who netted six goals. Sophomore Molly Taylor added a hat trick, while juniors Eliza Burk and Becca Guethler each added a pair. WILDCATS EDGED BY DOMINICAN, 9-8 IN WOMEN’S LACROSSE
BEAR, DE -- What was supposed to be a celebratory night for the Wildcats turned into heartbreak, as they suffered their second one-goal loss in as many games. The Chargers of Dominican College spoiled the ‘Cats “Catch for the Cure” Breast Cancer Awareness Night, sending Wilmington away with a 9-8 defeat in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) women’s lacrosse action on Saturday evening at Red Lion Christian Academy.
The Wildcats wore pink and presented the Delaware Breast Cancer Coalition with a check for over $6,000 the team raised to help the fight against this horrible disease.
The score remained close the enter way and neither team could get more than a two-goal advantage. Wilmington was up 5-3 with five minutes left in the first half, but the Chargers closed out the period with two goals to tie the game at five. The second half was much like the first, but this time it was Dominican that pulled away with the two-goal lead. Wilmington responded, and tied the game at seven. The two squads then traded goals, and in the final three minutes. Dominican scored the eventual game-winner, giving them a 9-8 lead that would hold until the final whistle.

QUEENS, NY -- Wilmington University dropped a non-conference game at the hands of the host Knights of Queens College, 20-5 in women’s lacrosse action on Monday afternoon.
The Wildcats held an early 3-1 lead, but Queens closed out the half on a 9-1 run, and went into the half holding a 10-4 advantage. It was all Knights in the second half, as they outscored the ‘Cats by a 10-1 margin.
Wilmington received single goals from Amber Harmon, Meggan Apgar, Danielle Niccoli, Molly Taylor, and Rebecca Guethler. Freshman goalkepper Corinne Dries recorded five saves in goal for the Wildcats.

It was 9-7 in favor of the hosts, early in the second half and this time, four straight goals by the ‘Cats put them ahead 13-7. Wilmington held on down the stretch, and came away with the 16-10 victory.

Wilmington ran off 12 straight goals to open the game, putting the Eagles in a deep hole they would never recover from. The ‘Cats were up 13-2 at the half, and cruised down the stretch to the lopsided victory. The game was just about 50 minutes long, as the officials made the decision to end early on count of the torrential rains falling from the sky.

LAFAYETTE HILL, PA -- The Wildcats of Wilmington University ended the season with a 14-12 overtime loss to the host Griffins of Chestnut Hill College in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) women’s lacrosse action on Wednesday evening at Victory Field #1.
The score was knotted at five at halftime, and the Wildcats rallied late in the second half, scoring the period’s final three goals to force overtime. It was there that Chestnut Hill pulled away, outscoring the ‘Cats by a 3-1 margin, and coming away with the 14-12 victory.
