STALLONE'S TWO GOALS POWER LADY WILDCATS TO SEASON OPENING 2-1 VICTORY OVER PACE

NEW CASTLE, DE -- Senior forward Kirsten Stallone netted two goals to help lead the Lady Wildcats of Wilmington University to a 2-1 victory over the visiting Setters of Pace University in non-conference women’s soccer action on Thursday afternoon at the Kirkwood Soccer Complex. The game marked the season opener for both teams.

Wilmington opened the game with a good deal of offensive pressure, but it was Pace who struck first when a Wildcat turnover resulted in a goal for the visitors during the 39th minute. Genna Kooner was the recipient of that turnover, and blasted a shot from 21 yards out, just over the head of Wilmington keeper, Amanda Walters. The Setters held on for the rest of the first half, and took a 1-0 lead into halftime.

The Wildcats answered back early in the second half, as Stallone took a cross from freshman Victoria Vasapolli, and deposited it in the back of the net to tie the game at one. Just two minutes into the period, Vasapolli let off a cross that the Pace keeper tried to knock away. The ball fell right onto the foot of Stallone, who easily punched it in the net. Ten minutes later, it was Stallone again who provided the magic for the ‘Cats. After a deflection off a Setter defender, she was alone with the ball in the box. Stallone then ripped a shot past the Pace goalkeeper, giving the ‘Cats a 2-1 lead, and scoring what would prove to be the eventual game winner. Despite an onslaught of pressure from the Pace attack in the closing minutes, Wilmington held on for their first victory of the season.

Junior goalkeeper Amanda Walters recorded eight saves for the Wildcats, while Courtany Hagen notched three saves for Pace. The Setters out-shot Wilmington by a 17-10 margin, including a 14-4 advantage in the second half. Pace also held a decisive 6-0 edge in corner kicks.

With the win, Wilmington improved to 1-0 to start the season, while Pace dropped to 0-1 on the year. The Wildcats return to the pitch on Tuesday afternoon, when they travel to take on Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference foe Holy Family University on Wednesday afternoon at 4:00 PM.
