8/31/2009 – Mercy College

WOMEN'S SOCCER OPENS SEASON WITH 6-2 WIN OVER MERCY

NEW CASTLE, DE -- The Lady Wildcats of Wilmington University started the 2009 season out with a convincing 6-2 victory over the host Mavericks of Mercy College in non-conference women’s soccer action on Monday afternoon.

Mercy opened the game with a goal in the 7th minute, as Ann Meenagh drove down the right side and beat Wildcat keeper Brooke Eveler. The Wildcats tied the game at one at the 14:38 mark when freshman forward Brittany Rhodes headed home a cross from junior Sam Simpson. Wilmington took their first lead just over five minutes later as junior Ashli Gerlach buried a through ball from classmate Kirsten Stallone. The ‘Cats closed out the scoring for the first half during the 42nd minute as freshman Anna Perrino scored off an assist from sophomore Klaudia Furman.

Wilmington started the second half with two quick goals off the foot of Stallone. She tallied an unassisted goal during the 55th minute, and netted another, this time off a feed from Gerlach, just three minutes later. The Mavericks cut the lead to 5-2 when Stephanie Bann scored an unassisted goal during the 74th minute. That would be as close as the hosts would get, as Furman added another goal for Wilmington at the 80:26 mark, giving Wilmington a 6-2 lead that would hold until the final buzzer sounded.

Freshman Brooke Eveler picked up the win in goal for Wilmington, as she recorded three saves in 58 minutes before giving way to classmate Amanda Walters (two saves), who closed out the final 28 minutes. Mercy’s Stephanie DiLegge had a busy afternoon, as she notched 15 saves. Wilmington held a decisive advantage in shots (30-10), and also held a 5-1 edge in corner kicks.

With the win, the Wildcats improved to 1-0 to start the season, while Mercy dropped to 0-2 on the year. Wilmington returns to the pitch on Thursday afternoon, when they travel to take on the Golden Lions of Dowling College in a non-conference matchup beginning at 2:00 PM.

9/3/2009 – Dowling College

WOMEN'S SOCCER BLANKED BY DOWLING, 2-0

BROOKHAVEN, NY -- The Lady Wildcats of Wilmington University suffered their first defeat of the 2009 campaign, a 2-0 loss to the host Golden Lions of Dowling College, in non-conference women’s soccer action on Thursday afternoon at Golden Lions Field.

The two teams battled to a scoreless first half, despite Dowling’s offense persistent attack. If not for the stellar play of freshman keeper Brooke Eveler for Wilmington, the ‘Cats could have entered the break trailing by a significant margin. Her solid effort in net kept the Golden Lions at bay, as she was peppered with 16 first half shots, compared to just two for the Wildcats.

Dowling finally broke through during the 58th minute, as Kate Collins connected off a feed from Vanessa Moreira to give the hosts a 1-0 lead. The duo connected again at the 79 minute mark, but this time the roles were reversed. Moreira scored off an assist from Collins, and the hosts went up by a 2-0 margin. That score would hold for the remainder of the game, as the ‘Cats were unable to break through.

Wilmington’s Brooke Eveler (1-1) was solid all game, recording 12 saves in defeat. Alicia Commisso notched two saves during the first half, before giving way to Sara Sullivan in the second half. Sullivan had five saves, as she picked up the win for Dowling. The Golden Lions held a convincing 32-7 advantage in shots, and had the 8-1 edge in corner kicks.

Following the game, Wilmington dropped to 1-1 on the season, while Dowling improved to 2-1 to start the year. The Wildcats return to the pitch next Saturday

9/12/2009 – Nyack College

WILMINGTON WOMEN EDGE NYACK, 2-1

NYACK, NY -- The Wildcats of Wilmington University scored a 2-1 come-from-behind victory over the host Warriors of Nyack College in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) women’s soccer action on Saturday afternoon.

After a scoreless first half, Nyack finally got on the board during the 69th minute, as the Warriors were awarded a penalty kick opportunity after an inadvertent hand ball in the box by a Wildcat defender. Aisha Smith converted the penalty kick, and sent the hosts up with a 1-0 lead. Ten minutes later, Wilmington netted the equalizer, an unassisted tally from junior Amanda Davis. During the 82nd minute, the Wildcats took the lead as junior Kirsten Stallone finished a cross from classmate Ashli Gerlach. The ‘Cats would hold on during the remaining few minutes, and came away with the conference win in their CACC opener.

Freshman goalkeeper Amanda Walters recorded four saves for Wilmington, as she earned her first collegiate victory. Shannon McNeeley notched 12 saves in goal for Nyack. The Wildcats out-shot the Warriors by a 26-8 margin, and held a commanding 5-1 advantage in corner kicks.

With the win, Wilmington improved to 1-0 in the CACC and 2-1 overall, while Nyack dropped to 0-2 in the conference and 1-3 on the season. The Wildcats return to the pitch on Tuesday afternoon, when they play host to the cross town rival Lightning of Goldey-Beacom College in a CACC contest beginning at 3:00 PM.

LADY WILDCATS ROUT RIVAL LIGHTNING, 6-0 IN WOMEN’S SOCCER

NEW CASTLE, DE -- Sophomore forward Klaudia Furman posted three goals and an assist to lead the Wildcats of Wilmington University to a 6-0 victory over the rival Lightning of Goldey-Beacom College in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) women’s soccer action on Tuesday afternoon at the Kirkwood Soccer Complex.

Junior Ashli Gerlach put the ‘Cats on the board during the 31st minute as she one-timed a cross from classmate Kirsten Stallone. Just a minute later, Furman connected on her first of the day, off an assist from junior Amanda Davis. During the 42nd minute freshman Liz Case scored her first collegiate goal on a pass from Furman. Wilmington’s Megan Whalen closed out the scoring in the first half when she poked home a pass from Danielle Niccoli with just over a minute remaining in the period.

The Wildcats would add two second half goals, both off the foot of Furman, as she completed her hat trick and sent the hosts away with the lopsided, 6-0 victory.

Freshman Brooke Eveler (2-1) and Kendra Ness shared the shutout for Wilmington, with Eveler recorded two saves in the first half before giving way to Ness in the second (four saves). Kristin Degenhardt notched 11 saves before leaving due to injury. Alyssa Vetrano replaced her and had four saves for the Lightning. The Wildcats outshot Goldey-Beacom by a 43-9 margin, and held a 7-2 edge in corner kicks.

With the win, Wilmington improved to 2-0 in the CACC and 3-1 overall, while Goldey-Beacom dropped to 0-1 in the conference and 0-4 on the season. The Wildcats return to action on Thursday afternoon when they travel to take on the Knights of Queens College in a non-conference game beginning at 3:30 PM.

LADY WILDCATS FALL TO QUEENS, 2-0 IN WOMEN'S SOCCER

FLUSHING, NY -- Two second half goals lifted the host Knights of Queens College to a 2-0 victory over the Lady Wildcats of Wilmington University in non-conference women’s soccer action on Thursday afternoon.

Queens held a 9-2 advantage in shots after the first half, but the two squads entered the break scoreless. Just four minutes into the second half, Laura D’Amore lifted a shot into the top right hand corner to give the Knights a 1-0 lead. The Wildcats would continue to battle to erase the one-goal deficit, but Queens’ Kirri Bolton gave the hosts an insurance goal with just over five minutes remaining on the clock.

Wilmington’s Kendra Ness (0-1)recorded six saves in goal, while her counterpart from Queens notched four saves in net. The Knights outshot the Wildcats by a 17-9 margin, but the ‘Cats had a 3-2 edge in corner kicks.

Following the game, Wilmington dropped to 3-2 on the season while Queens improved to 3-1-1 overall. The Wildcats return to the pitch on Saturday afternoon when they play host to the Eagles of Post University in a CACC contest beginning at 12:00 PM.

STALLONE'S LAST MINUTE GOAL GIVES WILDCATS 2-1 VICTORY OVER POST

NEW CASTLE, DE -- Junior forward Kirsten Stallone netted a goal during the final minute of regulation to send the host Wildcats of Wilmington University to a thrilling 2-1 victory over the visiting Eagles of Post University in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) women’s soccer action on Saturday afternoon at the Kirkwood Complex.

Post got on the board first, as Meghan Hansen one-timed a cross from Susie Curran at the 13:27 mark. Four minutes later, Stallone netted the equalizer, as she put home a rebound off the foot of sophomore Klaudia Furman, to tie the game at one. The score would remained tied for the rest of the first half, despite quality attempts by both squads, with each team clanking one off the crossbar.

The second half saw the two teams fight to find chances. Wilmington had a few good chances sail high and wide, but the ‘Cats finally broke through in the final minute. After a flurry of attempts that created a log jam in front of the Eagles’ goal, junior Amanda Davis poked the ball the far corner, where Stallone walked it right into the back of the net to give the Wildcats the 2-1 lead. Wilmington ran out the remaining seconds, and came away with the important conference victory.

Freshman Amanda Walters (2-0) had six saves in goal for Wilmington, while Cassandre Michel notched 16 saves for Post, during her busy afternoon. Wilmington held a 22-8 advantage in shots, and also had the edge in corner kicks, by an 8-1 margin.

With the win, Wilmington improved to 3-0 in the CACC and 4-2 overall, while Post dropped to 1-1 in the conference and 2-4 on the season. The Wildcats return to the pitch on Wednesday afternoon when they travel to take on the Tigers of Holy Family University in a CACC contest beginning at 4:00 PM.

9/23/2009 – Holy Family University

WOMEN’S SOCCER EDGED BY HOLY FAMILY, 3-2

PHILADELPHIA, PA -- Freshman forward Megan Tole netted a hat trick to help lead the Tigers of Holy Family University over the visiting Lady Wildcats of Wilmington University, 3-2 in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) women’s soccer action on Wednesday afternoon.

Tole put the Tigers on the board first, as she lofted her first goal into the upper left corner during the 27th minute. The Lady Wildcats answered back, less than a minute later, as sophomore Kory Webster blasted a free kick from about 35 yards out to even the game at one. The score would remained tied and the two teams headed into halftime knotted at one.

The Tigers opened the second half with two goals during the first ten minutes. Tone struck again, this time during the 49th minute, as she headed a pass in from Ashley Antczak. She completed the hat trick on a breakaway goal off a through ball from Jill Shank just three minutes later. The Wildcats would not go down without a fight, and got within one when junior Danielle Niccoli buried a free kick opportunity during the 61st minute. That would be as close as the ‘Cats would get, as Holy Family held on for the one-goal win.

Wilmington freshman Brooke Eveler (2-2) recorded seven saves in goal, while Holy Family’s Michelle Giambrone notched two saves in the victory. The Tigers outshot the Wildcats by a 24-11 margin, and held a slim 3-2 advantage in corner kicks.

Following the game, Wilmington dropped to 3-1 in the CACC and 4-3 overall, while Holy Family improved to 2-0-1 in the conference and 4-4-1 on the season. The Wildcats return to action on Saturday afternoon, when they travel to take on the Deacons of Bloomfield College in a CACC contest beginning at 1:00 PM.

WOMEN’S SOCCER DOWNS BLOOMFIELD, 3-1

BLOOMFIELD, NJ -- The Lady Wildcats of Wilmington University defeated the host Deacons of Bloomfield College in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) women’s soccer action on Saturday afternoon at Orange Park.

Wilmington got on the board first, as junior forward Kirsten Stallone tallied an unassisted goal during the 23rd minute to put the ‘Cats ahead by a score 1-0. That score would hold for the remainder of the first half, as neither team could find the back of the net.

The Wildcats upped their lead to 2-0 during the 68th minute when freshman forward Brittany Rhodes finished a cross from sophomore Angelica Appold. Wilmington would add an insurance goal less than four minutes later when freshman Molly Taylor headed home a cross from junior Amanda Davis to make it 3-0 in favor of the green and white. Bloomfield ruined the Wildcats chance at a shutout bid when Laura Nunnery knocked a cross in from Stacey Jones at the 75 minute mark.

Freshman Amanda Walters (3-0) recorded nine saves in the win for Wilmington, while Adriana Moreno notched 16 saves in a busy afternoon for Bloomfield. The Wildcats out-shot the Deacons by a convincing 32-12 margin, and held a 7-3 advantage in corner kicks.

Following the game, Wilmington improved to 4-1 in the CACC and 5-3 overall, while Bloomfield dropped to 0-4in the conference and 2-6 on the season. The Wildcats return to the pitch on Tuesday afternoon, when they travel to take on the Rams of Philadelphia University in a CACC contest beginning at 4:30 PM.

LADY WILDCATS BLANKED BY PHILADELPHIA, 3-0

PHILADELPHIA, PA -- The Lady Wildcats of Wilmington University were shut out by the host Rams of Philadelphia University, 3-0 in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) women’s soccer action on Tuesday afternoon.

The Rams got on the board first when Trisha Sileo scored off an assist from Cari Schenkel during the 26th minute to give the hosts a 1-0 lead. That score would hold for the remainder of the period, and the Wildcats entered halftime trailing by one.

Just over ten minutes into the second half, Philadelphia struck again, with Sileo netting her second tally of the day, this time off an assist from Melissa Copeland. Copeland would add the third and final goal just before the game ended, giving the Rams the 3-0 victory.

Freshman Amanda Walters (3-1) recorded 13 saves in goal for Wilmington. Kelly Kowalewski notched three saves during the first 72 minutes of play for the Rams, before giving way to Rebecca Della Peruta for the final 20 minutes. Della Peruta had three saves to preserve the shutout. Philadelphia out-shot the Wildcats by a 22-11 margin, but the ‘Cats had the edge in corner kicks, 3-1.

Following the game, Wilmington dropped to 4-2 in the conference and 5-4 overall, while Philadelphia improved to 5-0 in the CACC and 7-1-3 on the season. WILMINGTON WOMEN BEAT CALDWELL IN OT, 2-1

NEW CASTLE, DE -- Junior forward Kirsten Stallone scored the game-winner with just 21 seconds left in the first overtime period, to send the Wildcats of Wilmington University to a thrilling 2-1 victory over the visiting Cougars of Caldwell College in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) women’s soccer action on Saturday afternoon at the Kirkwood Soccer Complex.

Caldwell got on the board first, as Jackie D’Orsaneo tallied an unassisted goal during the 31st minute to give the visitors a 1-0 lead. That score would hold for the remainder of the half, and the Wildcats went into the break trailing by one.

Just over five minutes into the second half, Wilmington struck with the equalizer when freshman forward Brittany Rhodes scored off an assist from classmate Molly Taylor to tie the game at one. Neither team would score again during the second half, and that set up Stallone’s dramatic finish in overtime. With just a few ticks left on the clock, she took a pass from Rhodes and put it in the back of the net, sending Wilmington away with the important conference victory.

Freshman Brooke Eveler (3-2) recorded nine saves in goal for the Wildcats, while Lauren Hoenig had 10 saves for Caldwell. Wilmington out-shot the visitors by a 13-9 margin, and held a 5-2 advantage in corner kicks.

With the win, Wilmington improved to 5-2 in the CACC and 6-4 overall, while Caldwell fell to 2-3 in the conference and 2-7 on the season. The Wildcats return to the pitch next Saturday afternoon, when they play host to the Clippers of Concordia College in a CACC contest beginning at 5:00 PM at Caravel Academy. The game, “Score For A Cure”, will feature the ‘Cats in pink uniforms as they team up to fight Breast Cancer.

WILMINGTON WOMEN ROUT CONCORDIA, 7-0

BEAR, DE -- The Wildcats of Wilmington University routed the visiting Clippers of Concordia College, 7-0 in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) women's soccer action on Saturday evening at Caravel Academy. The game, "Score For A Cure", featured the Lady Wildcats in pink uniforms, and along with help from the Delaware Breast Cancer Coalition, the two teamed up to show their support in the fight against Breast Cancer.

Junior forward Kirsten Stallone put the 'Cats on the board at the 18:19 minute mark, connecting off a feed from classmate Megan Whalen. That would be all the offense the Wildcats would need, but Stallone would add another, just over 30 seconds later, as she scored on an assist from sophomore Angelica Appold. Sophomore Klaudia Furman made it 3-0 in favor of Wilmington, when she took a feed from classmate Taryn Sanchez during the 23rd minute. Junior Ashli Gerlach closed out the scoring for Wilmington in the first half, when she scored off an assist from Furman at the 33:48 minute mark.

The Wildcats continued to pour it on during the second half, adding three more goals. Appold tallied the first of the three, during the 58th minute off an assist from freshman Brittany Rhodes. Rhodes scored just over four minutes later, when she connected on a feed from senior Nicole Meis. Junior Kendra Ness, who started the game in goal for Wilmington, scored the seventh and final goal, when she got back on the field late in the second half. Ness tallied her first collegiate goal as she converted a penalty kick opportunity in the 76th minute.

The trio of Ness, along with freshmen Brooke Eveler and Amanda Walters, shared time in goal for Wimington and combined for the shutout victory. Ness had three saves, Eveler recorded one, and Walters posted two saves for the 'Cats. Wilmington out-shot Concordia by a 14-8 margin and held a 4-1 advantage in corner kicks.

With the win, Wilmington improved to 6-2 in the CACC and 7-4 overall, while Concordia dropped to 2-4 in the conference and 3-7 on the season. The Wildcats return to the pitch on Tuesday afternoon, when they play host to the Griffins of Chestnut Hill College in a CACC contest beginning at 3:00 PM.

LADY WILDCATS RALLY TO DOWN CHESTNUT HILL, 3-1

NEW CASTLE, DE -- The Lady Wildcats of Wilmington University rallied to defeat the visiting Griffins of Chestnut Hill College, 3-1 in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) women’s soccer action on Tuesday afternoon at the Kirkwood Soccer Complex.

The Griffins, who came into the contest in first place in the conference standings, took a 1-0 lead when Lauren Riiff converted a penalty kick opportunity during the 20th minute. The visitors would hold that one-goal advantage until the final minutes of the half, as sophomore Angelica Appold connected on a feed from freshman Molly Taylor to tie the game.

Wilmington turned up the pressure to start the second half, and it paid off when junior midfielder Amanda Davis buried a rebound from a shot from classmate Kirsten Stallone at the 66:35 mark. Sophomore forward Klaudia Furman later added an insurance goal, on an unassisted tally during the 71st minute, giving the ‘Cats the 3-1 lead that would hold until the final whistle.

The Wildcats’ Amanda Walters (4-1) recorded three saves in goal, while the duo of Jessica Veazey and Caitlin Lafferty shared time in net for Chestnut Hill. Veazey had nine saves (three goals against) in 80 minutes of work before giving way to Lafferty (one save) for the remainder of the game. Wilmington outshot the Griffins by a convincing 27-5 margin, and held the 8-2 advantage in corner kicks.

With the win, Wilmington improved to 7-2 in the CACC and 8-4 overall, while Chestnut Hill dropped to 6-3-1 in the conference and 9-5-1 on the season. The Wildcats return to the pitch on Thursday afternoon, when they travel to take on the Lions of Lincoln University in a non-conference match beginning at 3:00 PM.

WILMINGTON WOMEN BATTLE TO SCORELESS TIE WITH DOMINICAN

NEW CASTLE, DE -- The Lady Wildcats of Wilmington University battled to a scoreless tie with the visiting Chargers of Dominican College in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) women’s soccer action on Monday afternoon at the Kirkwood Soccer Complex.

Neither team could find the back of the net, but both squads had quality chances to get on the board in regulation. Wilmington just missed late in the second half, when a shot by sophomore Kory Webster clanked off the top of the crossbar. The Wildcats mounted some pressure in both overtime periods, but could not find a way to get the ball past Dominican keeper Valentina Sturchio.

Wilmington’s Brooke Eveler (3-2-1) had six saves, while Sturchio recorded 11 saves for Dominican. The Wildcats held a decisive 23-12 advantage in shots, and also had a 5-3 edge in corner kicks.

Following the game, Wilmington’s record now stands at 7-2-1 in the CACC and 8-4-1 overall, while Dominican sports a 4-2-2 mark in the conference and an overall record of 5-5-3. The Wildcats return to the pitch on Wednesday afternoon when they host the Marauders of Millersville University in a non-conference game beginning at 3:00 PM.

LADY WILDCATS EDGED BY MILLERSVILLE, 2-1

NEW CASTLE, DE -- The Lady Wildcats of Wilmington University were edged by the visiting Marauders of Millersville University, 2-1 in non-conference women’s soccer action on Wednesday afternoon at the Kirkwood Soccer Complex.

Wilmington struck first, as freshman forward Brittany Rhodes connected on a through pass from sophomore Angelica Appold midway through the first half. The ‘Cats would hold onto the 1-0 lead for the remainder of the period and headed into the break up by that score.

It didn’t take long for Millersville to answer back with the equalizer, as Olivia Taylor finished a through pass from Jenna Gould just seven minutes into the second stanza. The Marauders’ Jenna Lininger tallied the game-winner, an unassisted goal at the 71:47 mark, when she knocked home a loose ball in the box. The goal, put the visitors ahead by a score of 2-1, a lead they would not relinquish.

The Wildcats’ Amanda Walters (4-2) recorded three saves in defeat, while the duo of Brandi Tipton and Taylor Suskie shared time in net for Millersville. Tipton recorded one save while giving up a goal during her 71 plus minutes of action, before giving way tos Suskie, who notched one save. Millersville out-shot Wilmington by a 10-7 margin, and held an 8-3 advantage in corner kicks.

Following the game, Wilmington dropped to 8-5-1 on the season while Millersville improved to 5-11-1 overall. The Wildcats return to the pitch on Saturday afternoon, when they play host to the Golden Falcons of Felician College in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) match beginning at 12:00 PM.

LADY WILDCATS RALLY TO DOWN FELICIAN, 5-3

NEW CASTLE, DE -- The Lady Wildcats of Wilmington University rallied from two goals down in the first half, to defeat the visiting Golden Falcons of Felician College, 5-3 in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) women’s soccer action on Saturday afternoon at the Kirkwood Soccer Complex.

Felician struck first, just five minutes in, as Brittney Brodniak scored on a shot that bounced over the head of Wildcat keeper Brooke Eveler. The Golden Falcons made it 2-0 during the 29th minute when Jenn Ghiroli connected on a feed from Derienne Jacobowitz. Wilmington got things together, and less than two minutes later finally got on the board when junior Amanda Davis scored off an assist from freshman Anna Perrino. The ‘Cats knotted the game at two with just over six minutes remaining in the first half as sophomore Klaudia Furman connected off a pass from junior Danielle Niccoli.

The Golden Falcons struck first again in the second half as Anna Peterson capitalized on a free kick opportunity during the 59th minute. Wilmington tied the game at three just four minute later as sophomore Kory Webster answered right back with a free kick goal of her own. Sophomore Taryn Sanchez gave the Wildcats a 4-3 lead during the 66th minute when she headed home a corner kick from Davis. Junior Sam Simpson gave the ‘Cats an insurance goal at the 73:01 mark, when she netted an unassisted tally to give the hosts the 5-3 lead that would hold until the final buzzer sounded.

Wilmington’s Brooke Eveler (4-2-1) recoded nine saves in goal, while Felician’s Allie Couzo had eight saves. The Wildcats out-shot the Golden Falcons by a 15-13 margin, and the corner kicks were tied at four apiece.

With the win, Wilmington improved to 8-2-1 in the CACC and 9-5-1 overall, while Felician dropped to 4-5-2 in the conference and 5-8-2 on the season. The Wildcats return to the pitch on Tuesday afternoon, when they travel to take on the Lions of Georgian Court University in a CACC contest beginning at 3:30 PM.

WOMEN'S SOCCER BLANKED BY GEORGIAN COURT, 5-0

LAKEWOOD, NJ -- Georgian Court’s Kelly Lyons scored four goals to help power the Lions to a 5-0 victory over the Lady Wildcats of Wilmington University, in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) women’s soccer action on Tuesday afternoon at Investors Savings Bank Field.

Lyons gave Georgian Court a speedy 1-0 lead when she put in a Candace Seaton pass at 2:21 for her sixth game-winning score of the year. Alley Abbate fed Lyons for another score at 25:32 as Georgian Court entered the half up, 2-0.

She clinched the hat trick at 57:13 on a Taylor Reinecke dish before ending her scoring spree at 80:28 on an assist from Shannon Mastrogiovanni. Freshman Latifa Kelly scored her first collegiate goal on a penalty kick at 81:16 made necessary by a Wilmington handball, icing the victory for the Lions.

Georgian Court goalkeeper Lindsay Hammond (Sr.) made five saves in securing her eighth shutout of the year. Wilmington’s Brooke Eveler (4-3-1) had four saves. The Lions out-shot the Wildcats by a 13-9 margin, and held a 4-2 advantage in corner kicks.

Following the game, Wilmington dropped to 8-3-1 in the CACC and 9-6-1 overall, while Georgian Court improved to 10-2 in the conference and 12-7 on the season. The Wildcats close out the regular season on Thursday evening when they travel to take on the Hornets of Delaware State University in a non-conference match beginning at 7:00 PM.

WOMEN’S SOCCER CLOSES REGULAR SEASON WITH 2-2 TIE AGAINST DELAWARE STATE

DOVER, DE -- The Lady Wildcats of Wilmington University closed out the regular season with a 2-2 tie against the host Hornets of Delaware State University in non-conference women’s soccer action on Thursday evening at Alumni Stadium.

Wilmington struck first when Brittany Rhodes and Kory Webster would work together down the left flank to find Kirsten Stallone just to the left of the penalty spot, and her right footed strike would beat DSU keeper Courtney Haas low and to her left in the 19th minute. The Wildcats would hold the run of play for most of the first half, out shooting the Hornets 6-2, and earning three corners against none for the home side.

Delaware State tied the game at one during the 73rd minute when Theresa Wappett chipped a ball in from Ashlee Gourdine. Gourdine struck again just 10 minutes later, on an unassisted tally to give the Hornets the 2-1 lead. Less than a minute later, Wilmington’s Klaudia Furman tied the game, as she chipped a ball from the right side near the edge of the penalty area to the far post and over Haas' head.

Wilmington’s Amanda Walters recorded 10 saves in goal, while Courtney Hass had nine saves for the Hornets. The Wildcats were outshot 25-14 by the hosts, and DSU had a 6-5 edge in corner kicks.

Following the game, Wilmington closed out the regular season at 9-6-2 overall, while Delaware State stood 1-14-2 on the season. The Wildcats return to the pitch on Tuesday afternoon, when they begin play in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) tournament.

LADY WILDCATS CLOSE OUT SEASON WITH 1-0 LOSS TO #4 HOLY FAMILY

PHILADELPHIA, PA -- The fifth-seeded Lady Wildcats of Wilmington University saw their 2009 season come to an end at the hands of the fourth-seeded Tigers of Holy Family University on Tuesday afternoon. Holy Family defeated the ‘Cats, 1-0 in the opening round of the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) women’s soccer tournament.

The Tigers scored the game’s lone goal during the 12th minute when Lindsay Fisher played a beautiful corner kick into the box, where Dawn Curry headed it into the center of the goal, giving the hosts the 1-0 lead. That would be the only goal of the game, and Holy Family held on to advance into the semifinals on Thursday afternoon.

Wilmington was out-shot by a 15-13 margin, and Holy Family held a convincing 11-1 edge in corner kicks. Freshman Brook Eveler (4-4-1) recorded three saves in goal for the Wildcats, while Gina Mansi had five saves in the win for Holy Family.

Following the game, Wilmington ended their season with a 9-7-2 record, while the Tigers improved to 11-8-1 on the year, and advanced to take on the top-seeded Rams of Philadelphia University in a semifinal match-up on Thursday at 11:00 at the Kirkwood Soccer Complex.
