First Aid, Prevention & Care of Athletic Injuries

This course deals with safety concepts as they relate to responsibility in the schools and community. Students receive training in first aid and athletic injuries. Emphasis is placed on accident prevention, first aid and emergency care, and transportation of the sick and injured.

Nurse as Professional

This course provides a basis for role transition to the registered nurse as student and provides opportunity for exploration of the many dimensions of professional nursing. The student considers the multiple roles of the nurse, the conceptual basis for nursing practice, and selected issues facing the profession of nursing. The course includes an introduction to information literacy and writing skills. Class sessions and course assignments are designed to foster critical thinking skills.

Nurse as Decision Maker

This course focuses on the application of ethical thinking to contemporary nursing practice. The major ethical schools of thought are examined, and the issue of ethical standards is addressed. The relationship of ethics to technology, legal issues, economics, and persons with chronic illnesses or disabilities is explored.

This course focuses on the development of teaching skills for professional nursing practice. The course will explore the role of the professional nurse in teaching clients who may be individuals, families, communities, or peers.

In this course, students will utilize the skills and knowledge they gained in previous courses in Hispanic language and culture. Students will participate in a community clinical site which provides health care to the Hispanic community.

Nurse as Leader

This course focuses on the development of leadership skills for professional nursing practice. The course will explore the leadership role of the professional nurse through clinical practice, self-awareness, and professional involvement. The weekly clinical experience provides opportunities for the student to expand leadership skills needed in professional practice. The student's perspective of leadership as a component of all professional nursing practice is enhanced through self-directed interaction with a variety of nurse leaders.

Nurse as Consumer of Research

This course will emphasize the conceptual basis of research for the nurse as a consumer. Students will focus on the ability to read and understand published research reports. Students will learn the relevance of research in professional nursing practice. Advocacy and accountability in the conduct and use of research are stressed.

Nurse as Caregiver: Chronic and Palliative

This course emphasizes the professional nurse's role in health restoration and maintenance for individuals and families affected by chronic conditions from diagnosis through end of life. Palliative care issues are examined. The impact of chronic health problems on the individual, family, and community is explored. Prerequisite: NUR 303 or NUR 305 and 60 lower division credits

This course is intended to increase the student's ability to relate research findings to their clinical practice. Through independent research, the student identifies nursing research studies that relate to specific clinical problems.

This course recognizes the student's personal and/or professional experiences and/or accomplishments relevant to nursing. The student will independently document the experience and/or accomplishment to show achievement of course objectives. If contracting for more than 1 credit, a review of relevant literature is required.
Examples of personal and/or professional experiences and/or accomplishments related to nursing include: missionary work, disaster/humanitarian relief work, military experiences, volunteer work, community service, conference presentation, political action, national certification, parish nursing, and/or corporate training courses.

Holistic Health Assessment

This course focuses on acquiring the skills to complete a holistic health assessment on an individual and family. Emphasis is placed on: physical assessment skills, communication skills, assessment of growth and development, identification of learning needs, and awareness of cultural diversity. The impact of chronic illness and disability on the individual and family will be highlighted. Demonstration of physical assessment skills will be conducted in the campus laboratory.

Global Health Care

This course focuses on health care needs of aggregates in local, national, and international communities from the perspective of primary, secondary, and tertiary prevention. Students explore a variety of frameworks such as epidemiology, health care systems, and health care planning as conceptual bases for diverse community health nursing roles. The impact of chronic illness and disability on the community will be examined.

Hispanic Community Health Practicum (for Hispanic Cultural Track students only)

In this course students integrate health care needs of Hispanic aggregates into community health nursing practice settings serving members of the Hispanic population. Students gain experience in group teaching and community assessment within the Hispanic population to strengthen application of community health nursing roles and principles.

Topics in Nursing: Exploration of Addictive Behaviors

In this course, the student analyzes addiction as it affects the individual, family, and community. Through readings, film presentation, discussion, guest lecture, and small group activity, the student examines the causes of addiction, addictive behaviors, physiological complications, and treatment/support resources. The student chooses a specific addiction as a focus for individual study.

NUR 463
The Changing Image of Nursing
3 credits
In this course the student will examine the influences of the mass media and professional media on the development of nursing's image. Students will examine how stereotypes about nurses and the nursing profession have come about and explore strategies to change negative portions of that image for the future.
Individually and in groups students will analyze image in a variety of media forms i.e.: TV, newspaper, professional journals, radio, movies, video and audio tapes, photos etc.
Students will utilize their knowledge of image and develop a personal plan that reflects the image they wish to show in their professional life. This will include resume development and media training.

The Process of Dying
3 credits
In this course the student identifies and discusses factors affecting the dying individual and the responses these call forth in families and caregivers as they deal with the changes and events that occur with dying. This will be done within the context of age, gender, and cultural beliefs about death and grieving and of current economics and ethical issues related to dying as presented by the media, and in literature and actual experiences. The student will choose from a broad range of related topics one of particular interest to her/him for in-depth individual study.

In this course, the student focuses on the evolution and the role in society of organ donation and transplantation. Relationships will be explored regarding ethical, societal, and monetary considerations of organ donation/transplantation. The student will also come to understand legal considerations of using high technological care.

Topics in Nursing: Establishing a Nursing Practice.

In this course the focus will be on the nurse as a self-employed generalist or specialist practitioner who can offer a wide range of professional knowledge, judgment, and skill in general or in advanced nursing practice. Methods and procedures for developing and managing one's own individual or group nursing practice will be described and discussed. Barriers to establishing, financing, and insuring such a practice will be addressed. The legal, ethical, quality assurance, and professional issues related to private, professional practice will be investigated.

This course explores major health issues and concerns that affect women's health. Current guidelines for maintaining health and promoting wellness will be included. Specific conditions and disorders of the reproductive system will be addressed. We will investigate the changes a woman experiences in her health needs and concerns at different stages of her life.

Topics in Nursing: Stress Management

This course focuses on the development of stress management skills of the professional nurse. Theories of stress are examined. Independent and group analytical experience permits the student to fulfill objectives aimed at expanding knowledge and skills needed in managing stress in a variety of settings. The student's perspective of stress is examined and assignments focus on the development of insight, "hardiness,” and stress coping strategies.

Topics in Nursing: Sexuality Issues

This course is designed to provide students with the knowledge, skills, and level of comfort level needed to counsel patients about sexuality issues. Major topics include: sexuality and development through the life span; physiological, sociocultural, and psychological aspects; exploration of challenging issues; and techniques for educating and counseling patients. The emphasis throughout this course is on promotion of sexual health and healthy decision making.

Cultural Diversity in Health and Illness

The purpose of this course is to enable the student to become aware of beliefs about health and illness in relationship to the ethnicity of the health consumer. The course content will include discussion of the following topics: 1) The perception of health and illness among healthcare providers and consumers; 2) the cultural and institutional factors that affect the consumer's access to and the use of healthcare resources; 3) the effect of poverty and its impact on healthcare; and 4) the influence of faith on healing and illness.

Issues in Aging

This course on aging will explore the theories of aging, define healthy aging, and discuss nursing interventions that promote healthy aging. Using the Standards and Scope of Gerontological Nursing Practice and the nursing process, the learners will apply the knowledge of age related changes in assessing elderly clients. The issues of common health problems will be reviewed with an emphasis on assessment and interventions. Current research and government policy, as they relate to aging, will be incorporated throughout the course.

Nursing Topics: Victimology

This course examines the wide range of victimization experiences from the perspectives of the victim, the family, the offender, and society. Emphasis will be given to exploring etiologic and motivational issues and response patterns to victimization, crime scene analysis, offender profiling, and the implications for health care providers. Crimes to be studied include robbery, burglary, assault and battery, rape, domestic violence, arson child molestation, and homicide.

Trends in Cancer Care

This elective course will provide participants with information to obtain and maintain current knowledge regarding cancer care delivery pertinent to the full range of practice settings. Course content will be based on the cancer control continuum from prevention/early detection issues through palliative care. Ultimately, participants will be prepared to provide optimum levels of cancer care in their practice settings to support minimizing cancer incidence, morbidity and mortality in our community. The course will be taught as a seminar using local cancer nursing experts.

Contemporary Infectious Diseases

This course will examine infectious diseases in contemporary society from local, national, and international perspectives. The social, cultural, and environmental inter-relationships leading to the emergence, or re-emergence, of these diseases will be explored. Epidemiology will provide the basis for thorough examination of infectious disease. Specific student interest and/or current events will determine the precise disease focus in any given course section.

Clinical Research Associate

This course is designed to provide an introduction to clinical research and to the role of the Clinical Research Associate. The demand for qualified Clinical Research Associates has grown over the last several years and is expected to double in the next 5-10 years. This increased demand is a result of the recent movement to speed the drug development process and the growth in the research of drugs and also medical devices. This course will begin with an introduction to the clinical research team followed by the drug development process. Other topics will include site selection, monitoring, adverse event reports, and data management. This course will provide an introduction to clinical research and to new job opportunities.

This course provides a concise look into pathophysiological mechanisms of common diseases for students of nursing. It presents a contemporary introduction to the pathology of disease that stresses the most important fundamentals. The course is organized into two parts. Part One introduces basic topics of genetics, pathology, immunology, physiology of fluids and electrolytes and psychoneuroimmunological regulation. Holistic Nursing Practice

This course is structured around the framework of core concepts that make up holistic nursing. Dimensions of holistic nursing that will be discussed include bio-psycho-social spiritual theory as well as holistic interventions and research. Overall concepts of healing/caring and health promotion are examined within the nurse, client, and family-focused areas. Experiential interventions and holistically-based strategies to enhance self awareness and greater effective communication will be presented.

Botanical Medicines & Nursing Practice

The purpose of this course is to introduce the therapeutics of botanical medicines to nursing students. Utilization of herbal dietary supplements by consumer/clients will be explored along with the associated legal ramifications for the consumer/clients and nursing. Discussion groups will examine botanical medicines and the future of nursing practice. Nursing students will participate in developing therapeutic monographs for herbal dietary supplements in conjunction with the nursing process.
