College in High School Initiative

Mission Statement

In part, Wilmington University’s Mission Statement states…

Wilmington University is committed to excellence in teaching relevancy of the curriculum, and individual attention to students. As an institution with admissions policies that provide access for all, it offers opportunity for higher education to students of varying ages, interests, and aspirations.

With this in mind, Wilmington University is offering courses in the CHSI program.

What is CHSI?

Wilmington University and Middletown High School were happy to announce the creation of the College in High School Initiative (CHSI) in the Fall of 2006. This exciting new venture offers qualified high school students the opportunity to earn college credits while attending classes during the afternoon at Middletown High School.

CHSI is a program developed by Wilmington University and Appoquinimink School District Superintendent, Dr. Tony Marchio to help district students get a jump start on college.  Since the program began in September 2006, over 30 Middleton High School students have earned college credits while attending classes.

What courses are offered?

University courses Psychology and Sociology are offered during normal school hours. By successfully completing each course, students earn transferrable college credit while earning credit toward high school graduation.

Courses offered through CHSI are typical first-year college classes that meet transfer credit requirements at other academic institutions.

When are the courses offered?

The courses are offered on afternoon per week from 12:35–2:15 p.m.

Each course meets one day a week, has an online component, and is one semester long (15 weeks).

What is the cost?

To make this option available to as many families as possible, Wilmington University has reduced the cost of tuition by 50% for students enrolled through CHSI.

Application fees ($35.00) for CHSI students are waived.

Additional Benefits of CHSI

CHSI students who choose to attend Wilmington University after high school graduation will be afforded the additional benefit of having all admissions fees waived.

Participating students will receive a Wilmington University identification card which will allow them to use the University library and computer labs and will also provide access to other facilities located throughout the State of Delaware. Identification cards can be obtained at most Wilmington University locations.

How to register for CHSI courses

Students can register for CHSI courses at any Wilmington University location or at special registration events held at the high school.

Requirements for participation in CHSI

Students will be required to show proof they are a current high school student (a current high school schedule, letter from the high school, etc.).

CHSI is available to Juniors and Seniors in High School.

Safety net for high school students

We want the students, school counselors/guidance and Wilmington University to work closely with each other. The students’ high school requirements and diploma should have priority. If a student’s grades begin to show sign of declining, Wilmington University will help the student drop their college course so they can concentrate on their high school studies.

“We tell the student that their first priority is their high school GPA,” said Dr. Peter Bailey, the Assistant Vice President of Administrative Affairs at Wilmington College. “If they encounter problems maintaining their GPA, we encourage them to drop out of the class.” The college offers a full refund of fees if the class is dropped before the half way point of the course.
